I agree, the work on the tabard will be hard to see any way, leave it as visible as possible.

Having seen all the components so far, and the fabulous freehand work, I would agree that in this case, less is more - he is going to look excellent and adding too much more will only detract from the wonderful detail you have already achieved.

I'll go with the cross on a chain. The thing is that I really would like to make him as much templar as possible, as he's the Marshal. However, he won't be too templary in the end, without a tabard or lantern. I always can justify this by saying that his armour is so relic, that it's a shame to cover it with cloth :smile.:

Glorious freehand, glorious cape, glorious gold, glorious marshal, glorious everything! Also glorious work speed there, Brother.

Btw, where's that leg piece from, I seem to recall it, but not certain

It is from a web exlusive sergeant. Someone chopped the top part, and made a conversion. In turn, I bought his conversion which was dirt cheap, an decided to to my own, evilish ends. I'd never have the heart to 'destroy' a rare, and otherwise expensive, model. This is how it looks in GW-blue

And this is my version, in a darker colour:

There's also some progress with the Marshal. His helmet is done. I'm still not 100% sold on the centurion helmet, but I followed your advice. Also, as I picture my army as a siege force, that somewhat fits the fluff.

Wowzers, those eyes! Awesome. And that head is just so... mean? He looks like a badass, ready to curb-stomp some witches while roaring defiantly. Really powerful looking stuff!

I'm glad you think that way! Sorry for the flood of images, but I've been waiting to paint him for a long, long time. And now I'm excited about how he turns out. Body done. Only arms to go.

I magnetized the arms so that in the future I can change his weapons.

He should be ready by tomorrow. I also need to use some varnish, because as I handle him the paint on some edges wears off. But I dread the varnishing as I ruined some models with it: they had a layer of mould-like residue after spraying.

Also, I'm wandering whether not to change the black spaces on the chequered shoulder pads to white/bone.

Brothers! I'm pleased to report that Marshal Arthur, of the Neurode Crusade is ready. After all these years I own a personalized, fully painted Marshal of the Black Templars. It took me 2-3 days of work. Long days: I managed to listen to 3 Earthsea books in the meantime, and with the final chapter of the third book closed, I put down my paintbrush... and spend some more hours to finish the base. However, deem the result worth the effort. Here's a series of 'quick' photos: no background, artificial light etc. I even finished the base, and that is properly weird... I NEVER do that. But it seems I wanted to have him done.

And the most special part: the heraldry shield.

Really great work; so much drama to this piece, with the dynamic pose and all the details you have modelled and free-handed into him! Fabulous, may he go forth and slay heretics with impunity! He will bring much glory and honour to the Templars!

Thanks for all the amazing comments! I can't wait to field him and slay some heretics, xenos and other abominations.

Now for something completely different. I'd like to ask for your advice. I'm slowly adjusting my reserve of painted models for the requirements of 7th edition and the new options opened by the new codex. I got a couple of bikes in the mantime, so that I have around 10 of them (including 2 assault bikes). I kind of doubt that I'll ever find the spare points to get a biker marshal (and it would be a waste not to field Arthur with some other nastyness in a LRC or a Stormraven), but it would be good to have a suitable model, just in case.

I'm planning to use the DV sergeant biker as my bikes-sword brother and marshall. What would you advise? A power sword/relic blade? Or maybe teeth of terra/chainsword (for the SB)? It seems that ToT is a great choice for a biker-characters, as the adjoined bike squad will be quite limited in numbers and rampage should work more often.

I don't know why, but I'm not a huge fan of power fists/storm shields on characters this edition... But, on the other hand, AP3 is a bit dissapointing.

I generally feel if you are going to pay the points for a PF, you should just pay the 5 more for a thunder hammer.  Concussive is a really nice ability to have.  If you end up continuing combat, whatever you are fighting is now at init 1, just like you.

I've bounced around this idea SO much and here is where I stand.

Three wound Marshals get I5 weapons and less defensive gear.

Four wound Marshals get I1 weapons with more defense gear to reduce the risk of being killed prior to swinging.

Beautiful work on the Marshal. I love the heraldry, really good job on the flowers especially. Your highlighting style works really well and its very neatly executed.

The work you put in on the base was definitely worth it. It really helps to finish off the model.

A great model and a worthy leader for your crusade!

This is what I'll do. Thanks for that reply!

And, once again, thank you all for all the great support in regards to the marshal character. Though a hammer could've been a better choice than a relic/burning blade...

I've been away for some time, taking a week off to unwind after the "exam month." I managed to accomplish my main life goal for this time, that is I officially got my M.A. diploma. With that objective secured, I can turn more of my attention to 40K. And some "exciting" stuff is going on.

1. I'm getting back to gaming, hopefully.

2. I started the assembly of my amassed models, Storm Talons being the first step. These models, hideous at first, became pretty cool looking. But after assembling them... I just love them! Sure, they could've been better, but I won't complain. I'm going to pledge two of those for my 3rd ETL vow, if that is to come.

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k260/krj_38/Neurode%20Crusade/P1080004_zps5d6ca4f3.jpg

Oh, and assembling a NEW model was such a fun experience. That's a huge alteration from the regular reclaiming of second-hand models.

3. Apart from the regular celebrations after the defence of my thesis, I decided to do something to feed the nerd and celebrate the victory 40K-style. So I finally, and I really mean FINALLY, got a hold of a new, shining Stormraven. Oh, the model is expensive, but I lost hope and zeal in relation to my scratch built SR... and with the 'original' model waiting, I can see fielding it some time soon...

The lost zeal, lost due to the miscalculations of the size of my scratch built, is rekindled, however. Now my W.I.P. Stormraven will become a W.I.P. Storm Eagle. It is going to be an interesting modelling experience and and unexpected and awesome addition to my crusade. And the size issues won't be a problem there! My head already is full of ideas how to solve some problems, how to recreate some of FW's SE's features and what weapons to give it. I'm thinking "cheap:" vengeance launchers + HB. Or expensive, vengeance launcher + HB + Lascannons: the first two to deal with infantry, the latter to give it a nice anti-armour capacity, as the SE appears to be a very reliable weapons platform.

4. There is some ETL progress, too. I mixed some colours (red, black, purple) and basecoated my techmarine. Let me know what you think of the colour. As I understand it, "mechanicus red" isn't a regular red, it's more "dirty." I'm not sure if I captured that colour, though.

Okay! I wanted to post a battle report, but it seems that it won't go as planned. Nonetheless, here is a summary of my first gaming experience in a year or so. And it was dreadful. My opponent's attitude aside (his sloppiness, not knowing the rules and "bending" them to his advantage, at least as far as I know the rules) the gaming experience, at least for me, was terrible. Enough with the introduction.

As the game was supposed to be a friendly match, this is what I brought. I wanted to try out the Stormtalons and use my LRC which was gathered dust for a long, long time.

Captain, Storm Shield, Relic Blade

Tactical Squad, 10 marines, flamer, ML, Rhino

Crusader squad, 10 initiates, 3 neophytes, MG, LRC

Vindicator

2x Stormtalon

Ironclad, MG, HF, DCCW+Seiismic Hammer, Drop Pod

I didn't know what hell bring, but I hoped that won't be IG. The idea was to use the stuff that I usually don't use and field flyers and an Ironclad for the first time. I assumed that the Vindi will be destroyed turn one, the Rhino squad will secure some objectives (them being 3 scoring units in one box), and the big LRC squad with the Marshall will kill whatever was up against them.

It turned out that he was an IG player. I don't know the codex, but this is what he brought.

Command Squad with a lascannon

two squads of 30 guardsmen with 3 autocannons each

primalis psycher

Coatez

veterans in a chimera, 3x PG

some Leman Russ pattern, with a "new" gun which I didn't know of earlier (7th ed codex stuff): 36" range, AP4 shots

2 chimera-based tanks with 4 TL, shred blasts

manticore

Aegis with quad gun

----------

IG Turn One

He rolled for initiative, deployed first. After one :censored: hour, he set up his troops behind the line. He rolled some heresy rolls, used some divination spells granting a re-roll to hit. He issued his IG orders and started shooting. The Vindi was damaged by the lascannon, finished off by a heavy bolter from one of his "chimeras." Manticore stripped 2 HPs from the LRC. Autocannons wrecked the Rhino. The Initiates disembarked, 3 of them died due to more IG fire. Then I learned that Coatez has a S4AP1 eagle, he rolled 5 hits on the eagle, but luckily only one Initiate died, as he was out of range.

BT Turn One

I dropped the dreadnought close to his line to burn some troops and destroy the leman russ. Unfortunately, I couldn't get close to the manticore. I moved the LRC full distance and fired snaps at his IG. 2 of them died behind their line. The survivors from the Rhino approached two different objectives.

When the Ironclad arrived, my opponent 'discovered' that Coatez has a special rule. He fired all the autocannons and the quad gun at the drop pod (Coatez was attached to the squad) and destroyed the drop pod. As we weren't sure if they can shoot the Dread too, we rolled a D6 and it turned out that he can't, at least for the purposes of the game.

IG Turn Two

He moved his chimera with the veterans and shot the Ironclad from the back. With one lascannon shot he destroyed the LRC. My Crusaders moved out, he started shooting at them. They survived 8 small blasts from the chimera-based tanks, a salve of lasguns. The Marshall and 8 Initiates were still standing when I conceded.

There is no honour in pointless defeat, nor there is fun in having a 5-minute long turn between his 30-minute ones. I'd be tabled next round for sure. Maybe if he made his decisions more quickly, the experience would be more bearable. But it wasn't so. Instead of fighting to the last man, I seized the opportunity and managed to get home early.

Lessons? Never make fun-lists if you want to play. I also should know my opponent (that is, the codex) better, but as a casual gamer I don't have the time for that. Paint more sternguards, Ironclads and Drop Pods for a more reliable, 2-pod alpha strike. With this depressing game, I'll make ready for the next one on Saturday.

well Coteaz is a cheesy grossly under cost, he comes with 100 points of rules and you get a lvl 2 psyker in Artificier armour with a force thunderhammer for free. I've also played against these types players in tournaments that will take up as much time as possible on their turn to try and end the game early. Slow playing in a timed gaming environment IS CHEATING. He knows that you might only have 2 hours to play the game, so he's gonna use up as much of it as he can. Leaving you with little time to decide your own actions. Or the game will end early on turn 2/3 because you ran out of time. It was a smart move to end the game early and pack up. Those kinds of players ruin the game.
