Well the corvus guys have arrived and Ive had an idea regarding making them look like Vets

I had an idea that they may look cool with a reverse symbol pad with the white denoting the Vet status.

This is just base coated and washed with the chapter symbol painted as a test.

What do you think? Be honest as Im not sure so Im looking for real feedback before I move onto the other 4

And now a question where are you hiding in Chesterfield?

as I'm a local lad in Bolsover and always looking for new guys to

Bounce ideas off and game with. Shoot us a PM so as not to bog

Down this excellent WIP

Thanks guys

White it is then, lets see how it looks on 5 of them. Ive also got the 25th anniversary model as the squad sergeant

@grandmaster Damion, Im over in Brookside. I only paint now and dont play any more. I had my Ultras in in Chesterfields GW window for about a year but took them out when the last manager left.

Looking great so far. I love everything up to the Mk6 Corvus guy. It isn't that his paint job is less than awesome, but an Ultramarine in corvus armor looks somehow "off" to me. Corvus plate seems to be more at home with the raptor-esque legions like the ravenguard, blood angels and dark angles (ravenwing).  I suppose since Ultras are the *iconic* space marine, I'm just so used to seeing them in Mk7 & 8 warplate on all the boxart.

Anywho, terrific business so far. I think I may be pilfering your cloak painting technique ^_^

My earliest memories of the first plastic box set was of the blue squads and that GW used Ultras for a lot of their guides (such as squad markings) This even inspired me to make up this squad which includes helmets, backpacks and torsos from that box set (from 1990ish that I still had)

Have a look at these and tell me they dont suit ultras msn-wink.gif

It even includes the 1st marine I bought brand new which I painted up for the local GW's 25th celebrations

Beakies look good as any chapter, the point I was making was I think they look good as Ultras. Ive also got a small Ravenguard squad which are only beakies.

Getting back on topic the aim of the Vet division is to show the various armour marks painted up as one unified force to demonstrate the age of the troops.

More to follow at the weekend

Keith, the blues pretty simple

Black undercoat

Spray on mix of mordian blue and macragge blue base

Spray highlight of ultramarine blue (I have stock piles)

wash with drackhanhof (sp?) Nightshade (Azurman blue)

highlight with mixes of ultramarine blue, shadow blue and white in various mixes

Anyway heres a little update

Dev 3 and 4 are coming on ok.

I managed to screw up Dev 3's leg by touching the paint with a finger covered in plastic glue so ended up repainting it badly.

Im not sure about the rocket launcher though, I thought Id add hazards to the nose but it looked too much.

Still got final highlights, base, weathering, seals, script etc etc but want to get onto Dev 4 asap

Whats really odd is the FW balancing arm, its so short!

Rocket Launcher guy is finished except for the script on the purity seals.

Ive tried taking the photos on a white background as the black was making the whites look off

These are coming on very nicely rich. Your making me want to paint some 1st Company. And get some of the shoulder mounted heavy weapon (already have some missile launchers). And actually assemble some models with Tigris bolters (once again, got some but not used them yet).

Keep up the good work.

Thanks Toxic

Im working through these steadily but Ive another 20 marines to finish!

Heres the next one.

Ive actually been watching the miniature painting secrets with natalya and tried her method of blending and shading on this mini.

Ive either not gone far enough with the highlighting or its just too subtle to what I normally do.

Ive tried this method on the arms and legs

Im still not sure about the white pad. Looking at the veteran box set they have painted the knobbly pad all white and left the symbol pad as standard blue.

I can't seem to find my copy of Insignium Astartes right now but I'm almost certain that the markings are acceptable as you have them.  Besides the pad looks fantastic as you have it.  I'll keep looking I know I have a PDF version of the book, I just can't seem to find it.

Found it.  They have several pages of variants.  I don't see one with an all white pad and blue markings but I'll keep looking.

Looking good. What's Natalya's style of blending like? You seem to be getting similar results to me, although I darken mine a bit afterwards with multiple blue glazes. Your black also seems similar - do you highlight it with a turquoise too?

The chain blade on that last Vet looks particularly good. And I agree with mikhail, keep the pad as is, even if it's not 100% Codex compliant.

Natalya seems to paint in bands of shade (so you can see the bands) then blend them up using a wash stage.

Ive always wet blended up from dark to light and always tried to get the transition of colour right first time.

I like the results but it doesnt have the hard highlight edge my other minis have. Im working on a mk1v marine now so I'll post that tonight if it gets done

Interesting. I'm kind of between the two of you. I wet blend (light to dark for shading and dark to light for highlighting, working from a midtone) but I also glaze a lot too in order to help smooth the transition. I've found that glazing does take away from the hard highlight of models, because it brings the edge highlight closer in tone to the other shading/highlighting. I'm currently experimenting with taking my edge highlight even higher to compensate for the glaze, but it's a trial and error thing and i'm not there yet. Another alternative would be to do final edge highlights after the glaze, but I think you'd need to keep them very refined as they would really stand out. I prefer the theory of the first method myself, but I need more practice to get it right.
