Ultramarines 1st Company project

I think the back banner from the FW Venerable Dread would look excellent as a Company Banner. Maybe a bit on the short side when it comes to banner length, but I doubt that it'll be too much of a problem. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing what else is on the way :)

Thanks Guys

Im thinking of this guy holding the banner (with the staff removed and replaced with the banner pole)

Heres whats next too. This is going to be painted straight out of the box as I love this mini and it will fit straight into my 1st company

And just for fun how about an extreme nid hunter. The GK flamer needs cleaning up and the I removing but what do you think? Too much? Too big?

I've never seen the first mini before, although with the mods you mentioned, he'll be perfect as the Company banner holder smile.png

The second mini is another I've never seen, but I like a lot. The third, well, the Flamer size isn't the problem for me, it's the lack of anything at the back of the weapon (as in, it looks a bit flimsy) is, if that makes sense?

The first one is the new master of Rites body with a FW head

The 2nd one is an Limited Edition marine that Ive had for an age but not had the time to do it but now the ETL is over I think I'll treat myself and do it as its going to be a fun paint.

Ive started on my standard bearer

Ive laid down a base coat and done a bit of highlighting

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/IMG_0278_zpsccb1c339.jpg

Im going to try a variation of this design (the first vet banner)

I may give up at some point as the banner has a wicked fold in it even though Ive done the hot water trick and flattened it slightly

EDIT: Good start. I took the banner off for one last coat of primer to make sure it was super smooth and dropped it and one of the resin skulls pinged off!!!!!

awesome! my only comment would be Im not a big fan of the angle on the banner itself, it should be more upright, but thats just me

Thanks, its not fixed yet but the only issue is the banners big.

If you look at the original FW mini thats holding it the banners almost 90 degrees to the mini so you either focus on the marine or the banner but you cant see both aspects at once. What Im going for is an angle where you can have it forward facing and still see the marine.

I agree though its still a bit off. I think I'll paint it up then see how it all looks when it comes together.

I totally didnt even put that together,  that can be an issue, I agree with anaziel, good choice of models for the banner bearer, cant wait to see it complete

Thanks for the feedback

Batu: I agree, Im going to knock up a drum fed bolter using anvil parts so it'll be shorter and chunkier

Heres a mini update

The standard bearers coming along

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/IMG_0285_zpsad92738b.jpg

But more importantly the banners started

Ive done basic outlines and a bit of shading so theres still loads to do.

Things Ive learnt

1) I spent way too long in my youth drawing judge dreadd. Subconsciously the imperial eagle started to go blocky and all justice department

2) I cant paint squared. The crux is more rectangle than square

3) I hate painting banners. This is the first and last  one I do (until the next one)

Anyway here it is. Remember its wip but comments welcomed.

The i (first co numeral) will be incorporated somewhere and the eagles claws will be grasping the scroll work

Dredd FTW! happy.png

Looks good mate. As much as I try, banners are something I can't get better at. The banner I have at the moment is the best I've done so far and it's still far and away from how I'd like it sad.png

The more I see Mark IV helmets, the more I want to have some! I need to scratch that itch before it gets too expensive! laugh.png

I'm still in awe of the shade of blue your Marines armour have. The richness of the red cloak makes it look even better and the leather strips (don't know what the name is) is probably the most realistic I've seen in a while smile.png

Thanks Guys

Did a bit more I thought Id share

You can tell how old the banners above are as that script is straight out of old 90s WD / Tolkein

I am so inspired right now by your work with the Master of Rites. Your use of the brushhead helmet really sells it, and opens up the door to changing where he's lookin, in general I get a real 'We've got this, lads' feel from the way you've put him to use.

So very very good.

Thanks for all the positive feedback

I wasnt happy with the crux and needed somewhere to put the 1st logo so I took a decision to make it square and stick the 1 in the middle.

Let me know if this works or if I should turn the red box back to a crux behind the 1.

Alternatively just paint a skull there and go back to standard. (I cant paint skulls though)

This is about done now bar the highlights and fold shadows.

Im going to give it break now and concentrate on the standard bearer

I would leave the square, and put the crux somewhere else. The banner of the first company should show the crux. Maybe in one of the upper corners, or into the Ultramarine symbol.

Insignia aside, the banner is truly fantastic. The NMM gold is really cool, as well as the scripture. I find it wary hard to paint scripture, but yours is awesome.

Way back when, a lot of banners I used to see for the First Company of a Chapter, the Crux was shown in the top left or right of the banner. Not sure if that was "official" or not, but that was many of us did back then smile.png

Thanks, I'll might see what a small one to the right of the I looks like with a small skull to the left.

For the script I used a 005 picma micron pen and then washed it in lahmian medium to seal it and matt it down
