+++Fleets of the Heresy+++

Captain Semper

Recommended Posts

I know this is highly unlikely but has anyone seen a ship of the same design as the Red Tear? Got A couple from Brotherhood of the Storm.

the Swordstorm. Capital-class. Huge. Retro-fitted for speed Flagship of the V Legion, the White Scars

Elective XII fleet lander Imperial Navy Logistics ship, planet fall capable

And one from Fear to Tread that's been mentioned before but still has not made the list.

Imperator Somnium the Emperor’s command carrier interstellar craft of unique classification matched in size the great orbital plates such as Riga and Skye mass of the vessel exerts a tidal effect on the local weather systems when in close orbit and can eclipse stars

I think it hasn't made the list yet because none of the non-Legion ships except for the Phobos Encoder have been added to the list. But since a ton of ships were added overnight, I'd imagine that Captain Semper is trying to collect it all into one big table before he posts so it's all done in one big go rather than piece by piece.

A Death Guard ship used to deliver death to worlds is named on the 137th page of The Horus Heresy: Book 1 - Betrayal

Mia Donna Mori - Goliath-class (?) battleship

Not sure if Goliath is used as a noun or adjective.

Quite possibly both I'd imagine.

White Scars:

-Swordstorm, Capital (flagship), Brotherhood of the Storm (BL) by Chris Wraight

Imperial Army:

-Elective XII, lander

Not sure if the lander is that relevant for the list, since I assume you want space craft?

Emperor:

-Imperator Somnium, unique classification, huge, Fear to Thread (BL Novel) by James Swallow

Death Guard:

-Fourth Horseman, Assault Barque, ???, The Horus Heresy - Betrayal (FW)

Hope these comply with what your after all findings are from The Horus Heresy collected visions

Haven't listed ships already listed unless additional or conflicting information is provided.

As you can see this resource is expanding exponentially. Please review it and let me know of any (unavoidable) mistakes.

Now a few general points:

I have not included ships that are not Space Marines' vessels. I might add the Custodes but Imperial Navy, Sisters of Silence etc are out. I did add the Emperor's vessel just for the fun of it (and because Raven Angel - the originator of the whole idea specifically asked for it :))and I might add verified Custodes vessels in the future.

Now as regards the status of each ship, feel free to post them. If there are enough to make the extra work that is the new column then I'll go for it. But if, from the entire list, it's only a handful of vessels whose fate we know then I'll leave it to the individual researcher to explore.

This is going great, keep adding guys! ;)

Getting bigger by the day. ;)

I believe you've mentioned Phi twice in the Alpha Legion table and the Emperor's Children are still missing this entry:

III Legion - Emperor's Children - Andronius Flagship pg76 Fear to Tread

It is definitely called Andronius, so it's a different ship to the Andronicus, in case it has not been included yet on those grounds.

A few more to add

Avenging Shadow, Eclipse-class light cruiser ( destroyed ) Night lords pg 250 of The Primarchs, The Lion

Intervention, Frigate. Dark Angels pg 286 of The Primarchs, The lion

Terminus Est. Death Guard pg 301 of The Primarchs, The Lion

Fastidious Prosecutor, Heavy Cruiser. Iron Hands pg 318 of The Primarchs, The Lion

Hope this helps

I think the Night lords 'Excoriator' is also mentioned in prince of crows but I'm not sure.

Yes. Not sure where though but I remember seeing it.

Maybe the Iron Warriors ship, "Stonebreaker" it's mentioned in Storm of Iron.

Could be included but nothing yet has shown in it in 30k and it could always be assumed that it was a spoil of war.

Well maybe in Mcneill's next novel, since he already included all his characters from 40k in 30k :)

I think there's a space wolves ship too that' s mentioned in 'emperor's gift' and in 'battle of the fang" think it's mentioned there that it has been around since the heresy.. but I'm not sure, I'll look into it

I was just skimming Fulgrim and noticed something. Ferrus takes his vets and deploys for Istvaan aboard the Ferrum. Thats rather well known. The part i had overlooked, Ferrus makes planetfall with TEN COMPANIES of Morlocks. Its been assumed that the Ferrum was a strike cruiser. My understanding 40k strike cruisers was that they could deploy only one company. If Ferrum could deploy TEN companies of TERMINATORS its something other than what we know as a "strike cruiser".

Sorry for all the yelling.

Much of the fluff does indeed say that one can fit only one hundred Marines aboard a strike cruiser.

OTOH, the same fluff also states that strike cruisers approach mainline cruisers in size. Ship sizes are far from consistent in 40K fluff, but Battlefleet Gothic puts strike cruisers in roughly the same size cathegory as light cruisers, and the BFG fluff also states that mainline cruisers are 5 kilometres in lenght, with light cruisers typically being about 4 kilometres.

If we compare that to a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier (a ship of 'only' 333 metres in lenght), which has (airmen included) a crew of over five thousand people, then a 4 kilometre long strike cruiser should logically be enough to transport a lot more than just a hundred Marines. Heck, such a vessel would propably be big enough to lose an entire Chapter in, materiel and all.

The same fluff also states that a battle barge can carry only 300 Marines - which is even more ridiculous when you consider that a battle barge is supposed to be the equivalent of a battleship; i.e. a ship of at least 7 or 8 kilometres in lenght.

So we've got a pretty blatant fluff contradiction here. In order to rectify this, you'd either have to scale strike cruisers back to about half a kilometre or less (that should be just about enough space for a hundred Marines + drop pods, thunder hawks, etc.), or accept that a strike cruiser can actually carry much more than that & chalk that 100 Marines limit up to game mechanics, some post-Heresy Codex rule, or something else in that vein.

I reckon that Graham McNeill was leaning towards the latter when it comes to the Ferrum and its complement of Astartes.

Yes and no. A strike cruiser in 30k is vastly more superior to a strike cruiser in 40k. The 40k versions were downgraded due to the general downgrading of the Legions to the Chapters and the constraints placed upon them. For example, a 40k strike cruiser is not supposed to be able to hold its own in void combat. In 30k, strike cruisers were expected to excel in void combat.
