this is just a simple post to keep a record of some of the SoB models i was asked to paint for a friend.  he's not very good at the painting bit (shaky hands) and he wanted something that would look nice enough on the tabletop when he decides to play them in local tournaments.

to show what i had to work with, this was what he gave me, which shows the overall scheme he wanted them painted in:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8035/7975257063_c23287fd23_n.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8035/7975256971_2c2545df57_n.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8315/7975256895_0c1c002818_n.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8443/7975257836_6136d1913d_n.jpg

Now, he's going for a DIY order, and he didnt have a name for them yet, so i decided to dub them the Order of the Azure Wave because of all the blue and him being in the Navy.

i tweaked his paint scheme a little bit on the test mini and sent it to him to make sure he was alright with the new design before i started into all 75 infantry models he wanted.  here's what i came up with:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8309/7975262653_a074ef4832_n.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8038/7975264144_83cbcd9f4e_n.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8437/7975263131_dab818d9e2_n.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8298/7975264426_e543fb3981_n.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8297/7975264334_820d9e70e6_n.jpg

that was done on the exact same model, just painting right over the original paint, and not stripping it clean first.

the first 3 models done looked like this:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8454/7981541449_ba5f9e237f.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8029/7981541327_e92f9e3c44.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8311/7981543380_4534d58c89.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8042/7981543294_4d1f728dce.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8314/7981540975_1ff638337e.jpg

i also did a couple conversions, such as this sister superior where i replaced the sword with a new blade, and given her a godwyn pattern boltgun to replace the old umbra pattern one.  in the finished shots of her repainted, you'll also see i altered her backpack using the censors from the Dark Angels sammael land speeder decorative rope.

here was the first 5 models completed:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8317/7990489395_48c7a0e2b8.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8447/7990498440_e720e692bb.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8320/7990498352_d951ecc8d6.jpg

now, at this point, the paint steps were a bit more time consuming, because i was doing this:

Step 1 - basecoat - Base - Kantor Blue

Step 2 - wash - Shade - Drakenhof Nightshade

at this point, your model's going to be a very dark blue with almost-black looking areas where the shade pooled into the recesses.

Step 3 - layering - Layer - Altdorf Guard Blue
http://i34.servimg.com/u/f34/16/24/55/15/00115.jpg

Step 4 - edge highlighting - Layer - Hoeth Blue
http://i34.servimg.com/u/f34/16/24/55/15/00211.jpg

Step 5 - drybrushing - Dry - Skink Blue
http://i34.servimg.com/u/f34/16/24/55/15/00311.jpg

Step 6 - glazing - Glaze - Guilliman Blue
http://i34.servimg.com/u/f34/16/24/55/15/00410.jpg

wanting to do some more conversions, i altered some of his flamer girls, making the ones in his basic troop choices use the flamer barrels from some guardsmen versions, and for the ones in his dominion squad, i used grey knight incinerator barrels. i also used some guardsmen gas masks on the melta gun girls in the dominion squad to make them match the flamers in the same squad:

http://i34.servimg.com/u/f34/16/24/55/15/00612.jpg

now here's an exorcist i converted for him, and this also made me stop painting for a good month because i gashed my hand cutting and moving the exhaust stacks on the rhino for this conversion:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8327/8098947165_a325e16b3f.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8323/8098956570_104844374d.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8184/8098947393_9ceca77b10.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8475/8098956496_a305da8a04.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8476/8098956318_47f57d928e.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8046/8098947241_ded4b45c3d.jpg

when my hand was better again, i did a test mini for the heavy weapons team. at this point i had started to paint strip his models because i was getting into older ones that had 2, sometimes 3 overlapped layers of color designs:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8481/8180387595_5c51a7c633.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8201/8180387483_d840017f06.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8340/8180387361_4c42a57ba5.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8068/8180387239_db6a24bdec.jpg

then i did some of the bolter girls for the heavy weapons team:

http://i44.servimg.com/u/f44/16/24/55/15/00512.jpghttp://i44.servimg.com/u/f44/16/24/55/15/00610.jpghttp://i44.servimg.com/u/f44/16/24/55/15/00711.jpg

at this point i also came up with a nice base design that went well with his color scheme:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8060/8187588178_14744ca88f_z.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8065/8186544809_831cb6f5a2_z.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8062/8186544741_941c22c7a0_z.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8343/8187587974_3aaba27a57_z.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8057/8186544643_8490cf41e1_z.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8062/8186544557_00c2d570ae_z.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8210/8186544511_388f65fae8.jpg

here's the token heavy bolter girl in his army:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8490/8194371415_b628dffffb_z.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8478/8194371317_740f4eb32a_z.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8484/8194371233_3f656f7da6_z.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8206/8194371123_5dff2d6f42_z.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8202/8194371023_d04053b030_z.jpg

next up was converting his command rhino to look like a old style rhino:

http://i44.servimg.com/u/f44/16/24/55/15/112.jpghttp://i44.servimg.com/u/f44/16/24/55/15/210.jpg

at this point i was only working with about 1/3 of his models as a dry run to see if he wanted me to do the whole collection or not.  after seeing all of this progress, he shipped me the other 2/3 of the army, which included st celestine.  i started work on her once they arrived:

while i was working on her, i decided to go back and redo some of the highlights on the first troop squad he sent me, and they turned out as thus:

http://i13.servimg.com/u/f13/16/24/55/15/02010.jpghttp://i13.servimg.com/u/f13/16/24/55/15/02210.jpghttp://i13.servimg.com/u/f13/16/24/55/15/02310.jpghttp://i13.servimg.com/u/f13/16/24/55/15/02410.jpghttp://i13.servimg.com/u/f13/16/24/55/15/02510.jpg

here's a shot of most of the models he used recently at a team tournament where he had to field 750pts:

http://i13.servimg.com/u/f13/16/24/55/15/00211.jpghttp://i13.servimg.com/u/f13/16/24/55/15/00311.jpg

this also included a scratchbuild repressor he made and had me repaint for him:

http://i34.servimg.com/u/f34/16/24/55/15/00611.jpghttp://i34.servimg.com/u/f34/16/24/55/15/00710.jpghttp://i34.servimg.com/u/f34/16/24/55/15/00810.jpghttp://i34.servimg.com/u/f34/16/24/55/15/00910.jpghttp://i34.servimg.com/u/f34/16/24/55/15/01010.jpghttp://i34.servimg.com/u/f34/16/24/55/15/01110.jpg

here's some pics of the models in my display case while i was working on them:

thats about where the collection stands at the moment, as i told him i need a break from painting blue for a while.  as nice as they were to work on, i cant stand painting that color for too long of a period of time.

here's a shot of the sashes from the 2nd troop squad to show how i was making the sashes a little different to denote squads when theyre clustered together:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8051/8374540665_bc2bc4d76c.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8517/8374540613_fec7702a8e_z.jpg

Probably a fault in his translation software. Either that, or he meant the colour scheme is similar to the Night Lords'.

I have to ask - why the goth make-up? While I can understand pale skin from living in a convent and wearing a helmet outside, the blood red lipstick makes absolutely no sense for Sisters.

The Repressor and the Exorcist look pretty sweet though - what did you use for the Exorcist Launcher?

ah, good point.  the red was all i had that stood out well on their lips when looked at from across the table, so i went with it.  i tried a light pink like their eyeshadow, but that didn't show up too well. the eye shadow doesn't even show up on the table unless your holding one of them.

the launcher is the Torquemada Launcher from Bitspudlo.com http://bitspudlo.com/products/torquemada-launcher  they're full resin, the launcher pods being solid, with the ends being 'caps' you glue onto the ends of the cylinder.  it took very very little cleaning of mold lines to prep once it arrived.  and for the price, they're worth considering as an alternative system if you dont like the pipe organ.

Well, why are they wearing lipstick and eye shadow at all? They're soldiers on the job, not students dolled up to go clubbing.

Where in the canon does it state the position of the ecclesiarchy on make up?

Why are they wearing makeup? You're kidding right? It's the 40st Millenium? Subject to different cultural mores? In fact any cultural mores you care to imagine.

- Soldiers on the job? No they are not. They are a religious order of warrior nuns.

- Soldiers on the job don't wear makeup? Says who? Modern soldiers min the US army may be subject to that restriction but soldiers of earlier eras were not. Commissioned officers and many regiments of c18 went to war in powdered wigs. In c17 a gentleman officer without rouge will have not been a gentleman.

- Lastly, soldiers on the job, (modern ones) don't wear bright blue clothes to fight, or surplices, or beads bearing devotional icons as part of their uniform.

If the man wants lipstick on his figures he can have it.

I don't paint eyeshadow or rouge, but I do put red lipstick on all my Sororitas.

Why? To drive home the fact my opponents models are getting shot and killed by girls msn-wink.gif It amuses me...

Somewhere I have a squad of children and amputees that I used to run as a militia unit to hold my home objective while my warrior nuns took care of business. The Lady Pennington's Orphans usually survived, but when they didn't I got to lament the inhumanity of my foe, brutally slaying the orphans and their differently abled caregivers. I liked to view it as a sororita supervised field trip from the local Schola branch designed to teach potential future sororita and commissars about the contemptability of the Emperors enemies.

"I'm not differently abled, I'm a -ing cripple, mate." - my partner to her psychology teacher.

I once told someone "I don't have a mood disorder, I'm just an @hole"biggrin.png And then I smiled just like this.

Well painted models by the way. I'm not a fan of the scheme but if thats what the man wants their his models.
