SW1's +++E Tenebrae Lux II - 2013+++ Vows

SW1

Recommended Posts

Well I've got the RA Njal finished and on a base.  Seeing the models together has finally made this project feel like it's coming together.  Previously the Great Company had multiple different paint job's spread over the last 15 years worth of collecting.  So stripping everything down and getting a clean sheet to start again has been quite cathartic.  I expect to have the vow finished tonight or tomorrow.  :D

My brothers vow hopefully will be finished this weekend.

- Ulrik (converted to have a different plasma pistol and crozius) ... 180 points

- Ulrik with a jump pack (will be counted as Wolf Priest w/ RA, Jump Pack, WTN, WTT, PP) ... 155 points

- Wolf Lord w/ RA, PF, WC, WTN, WTT and 2 wolves ... 200 points

- Wolf Lord w/ RA, PF, PF, WTN, WTT and 2 wolves ... 205 points

- Wolf Lord w/ RA, Jump Pack, FS, WTN, WTT ... 185 points

- Wolf Lord w/ TDA, FA, SS, WTN, WTT and 2 wolves ... 210 points

What's the SWC site? huh.png

It's a rather friendly forum I've been a member of for quite a few years (swchq.co.uk) and stands for Space Wolf Community HQ. It's mainly dedicated to 40k in all it's flavours (not just SW's), with space for WHFB, GWS's specialist games and a wide range of other games.

The members are a good laugh and the banter flows freely. We've got members from all over but those that can make it come together once a year for gaming and drinking. It's feels much more like a big extended family than a gaming forum.

Think I've cracked it with the bases ...

Time to get cracking with my 2nd Vow:

I SW1 make the following as my 2nd Vow ...

Named Characters:

 - Njal (converted to remove the CotS which will be modelled on a separate base) - 245 points

 - Ragnar (counts as using the classic SW captain model) with 2 Wolves - 260 points

 - Ulrik (converted to have a different plasma pistol and crozius) - 180 points

Standard Characters:

 - Wolf Lord with Jump Pack, Runic Armour, Frost Blade, Wolf Tooth Neclace, Wolf Tail Talisman - 185 points

 - Wolf Lord with TDA, Power Fist, Wolf Claw, Wolf Tooth Neclace, Wolf Tail Talisman, 2 Wolves - 200 points

 - Wolf Lord with Runic Armour, Power Fist, Wolf Claw, Wolf Tooth Neclace, Wolf Tail Talisman, 2 Wolves - 200 points

 - Wolf Lord with Runic Armour, 2x Power Fist, Wolf Tooth Neclace, Wolf Tail Talisman, 2 Wolves - 205 points

... For a total of 1,475 points from the Space Wolf Codex by the 15th of August.  If I fail I will wear the badge of shame till the end of the year.

You'll notice I've not included all the characters I listed as available to paint.  I'm reserving an original of Ragnar and an original of Ulrik for my brother to paint up.  I reckon those will be enough for him to reasonably attempt to paint up over the next 2 months.  Will get a WIP pic of his model up after getting the lads to bed.

The other models are lacking important bits (mainly pads or arms), so it's pointless making a vow with them yet.

The changed bases lift the miniatures more than the original ones. I you have a great core of special characters there and I love the grey wolves scheme, much better than powder blue.

Just arrange a time you want to pop over if you want an photos with my lighting rig?

Will take you up on that offer when a few more wolves have been finished.  Maybe we can have a few beers after?  ;)

Just moved the finished models into my cabinet for safe keeping and getting the models out that make up the 2nd Vow to take a pic of them.  Then it's time to crack on with the painting once more.  :D

Need to get the GS out to sort out the wolves neck/tail joints and find 2 pads.  Looking forward to a quicker turn around than the last vow.

The models have all been undercoated/basecoated/washed and 2 of the wolves have been finished and base up already.  I'm really enjoying painting the wolves up and think I'll be keeping a look out for more of them to add onto the army asap.  In there previous incarnation as Vampire Counts wolves they were all grey, boring and to be completely honest a really badly painted.  They are now a range of brown/grey/black and will be much better painted by the time they are all done.  :D

I'm still slowed down with my back but having to wait for layers of washes to dry helped break up the painting.  These definitely suit on mass batch painting.

My brother came around for a bit of painting.  He's decided on some rather bright colours which I' trying to convince him to tone down a bit with washes.  Think he's started getting bored with just keeping on with 1 model to the finish.  Lol ... Feel quite knackered now.

Well the wolves have been painted I just need to sort out the bases.  Currently undercoating a load as I'll be needing many by the time I'm finished with the Great Company.  The characters I'm painting up are all at different points in the painting process.

Currently got 8 bases outside waiting for the primer to dry, another 8 bases on the side waiting for the basecoat to dry and I'm prepping another 8 ready to spray.  Gonna add another batch to the process shortly.

My brothers model just needs a back pack and base to be finished to a level he's happy with.  He'll be over shortly so we'll see if he finishes it tonight.

My brothers model just requires a back pack sorting and he'll be finished on his present vow. Not sure it's a sound idea getting him to do another vow as he's unlikely to finish it. But he's all up for painting Ragnar and Ulrik. None of my wolf back packs have a banner pole attached so I need to source either a standard back pack with a banner pole or a SW back pack with a banner.

Lol ... I can't stand them so I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up getting the metal rod out and make one for him.

Here's a WIP of his model:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/WH40K/Space%20Wolves%20-%202013%20ETL%20II/030720132730_zps7472fac8.jpg

While I was doing bases for the current models I though I might as well get a few extras out of the way. Think I'm getting better with them now:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/WH40K/Space%20Wolves%20-%202013%20ETL%20II/030720132726_zps463f274c.jpg

Here's the finished Wolves:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/WH40K/Space%20Wolves%20-%202013%20ETL%20II/030720132728_zps338d0880.jpg

And here's my WIP of the rest of the Vow:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/WH40K/Space%20Wolves%20-%202013%20ETL%20II/030720132729_zps09f716bc.jpg

Finally a bit of a group shot (you can see I've altered the finished vow's bases again as the white markings weren't working for me, I'm NOT going to change them again!):

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/WH40K/Space%20Wolves%20-%202013%20ETL%20II/030720132731_zpsfd56916c.jpg

As you can see the rest of the Vow have a varied amount of work to be done. Main concerns on getting finished is the sourcing of the CotS for Njal (I had to return the failcast models I was going to use sad.png ) and the back packs as they've been put away somewhere "safe".

Think when they are done and all on proper bases it's going to look pretty cool. Can't wait to get some troops done and start using the smaller bases I've done. Main issue stopping moving onto other models is shoulder pads. Going to try an instant mould stamp to make the pads as I've got 100's of random plain pads. Need to decide on the pack markings for the different packs as well.

Looks good - both yours and your brother's work is coming along nicely. The way you described it I half-expected a fluorescent yellow armour - but in truth is a great job... :)

Look forward for the copletions of both of you because frankly, the SW need all the help they can get....

Lol ... I managed to get him to do the wolf on the pad black rather than yellow, that's toned down the model a lot.

I'll be looking to get my 2nd Vow finished in the next couple of days, just depends on how my back is.  A solid few hours would get this vow completed.

Wondering how many Vows we're going to see finished with the wolves.  Getting a bit worried actually, though if my brother can complete a small vow I'm hoping it'll give everyone a bit of a kick up the bum to complete their own vows.

The TDA Wolf Lord has been finished, while the Rune Priest needs his runes face and hair plus a back pad to be completed.  While the rest just need back packs doing.

I've located a plastic pack pack my brother can use with a banner already attached s I don't need to worry about that either.

I'm expecting all of my 2nd vow to be completed tomorrow.  My brother will probably be over Friday so I expect he'll complete his vow and start a 2nd one then.

And here's where my finished wolves are:

Looking forward to bulking out the army now.  The ETL has kick started my army painting and I can see that my Great Company will be finished before the end of the year.  The highest points value models I'll do my best to complete before the end of the ETL challenge.

My 3rd Vow will be put up and started tonight.  :P

Well the 3rd vow hasn't been set or started yet.  Instead I got side tracked on getting some more bases sorted so I can just mount stuff up as soon as it's completed.

I've now got 25x 40mm bases and 36x 25mm bases just needing a bit of yellow detailing and they'll be completed.  The only reason I did that number is that I had them already cast up.  Will need more very soon.  :D

Can't decide what to pledge next but I'd like to smash the 5k mark if possible.  Not sure if that's a bit of a risk though, going for a +2k vow at this stage.  It'll have to be padded out with troops choices as I'm running out of very high points value models to paint.  Though saying that I've got Arjak, Lukas, Bjorn (though I've not sculpted a Dread sized base yet).  I'm also considering doing the extra Ulrik model with a jump pack as it comes out at the same points and gives me a bit of variety.

Currently thinking about the following units:

 - Wolf Priest with Runic Armour, Jump Pack, Plasma Pistol, Melta Bobs, Wolf Tail Talisman, Wolf Tooth Necklace ... 180 points

 - Bjorn ... 270 points

 - Bjorn with twin-linked Lascannon ... 290 points

 - Blood Claws (19 men split into smaller units to allow all options) ... 495 points

 - Lukas

 - 2 Flamers

 - Plasma Pistol

 - Power Axe

 - Power Mace

 - 13 standard Blood Claws

 - 5 Wolf Guard all with pairs Wolf Claws and Jump Packs ... 365 points

 - 5 Wolf Guard all with Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield and Jump Packs ... 465 points

 - 5 Wolf Guard ... 460 points

 - Arjac

 - Wolf Guard with TDA Assault Cannon and Power Fist

 - Wolf Guard with TDA Assault Cannon and Storm Shield

 - Wolf Guard with TDA CML and pair Wolf Claws

 - Wolf Guard with combi-Melta and Power Fist

Points total 2,525 points.

This is not my Vow, just laying with the models deciding what to take.

Well you do have three vows remaing... I suggest you break them up to three roughly equal batches of ca. 800pts each. Also try to make the model count roughly the same so you will not get bogged down...

I think things like the undercoat and washes suit on mass painting, if you have a big enough batch by the time you've done one process the first models have already dried.

I'm also looking at possibly doing 2 Long Fang Packs with 5 Plasma Cannons in each pack, comes out at 380 points with basic load out for the pack leaders.  Another option is a couple of Iron Priests (both with WTN + WTT), with one having 3 Thrall-Servitors and the other having 2 Cyberwolves that comes out at 190 points.

Maybe I should hunt for all the models that don't require shoulder pads and vow them.  Then complete them as quickly as possible while making a mould up for the pads I need (I can't source 150+ ragnar's company pads) while I'm at it.  Could also do with getting 1 or 2 master bases created for Dread sized models so I can make moulds from them to cast up.

Thankfully it looks like I've managed to re-learn the art of using instant mould.  I'm going to spend the rest of today making as many pads as I can and then whatever I make enough pads for will be my next vow.

My brother has also finished his 1st vow, not sure if he'll be making another vow.  Will get a pic of his finished model later on.
