The medicae is almost finished...

When I glued that right arm on, I used just a tiny dot - enough to hold it in place while I sculpted - expecting to just pop it off once it was done so I could paint it separate from the body. Now it won't come off. >_<  I've wiggled and twisted as much as I dare for fear of damaging the GS, and I can't get it to budge. *sigh*

I also have an update on the commissar, since I finally came up with something for his right hand:

The stick-cane-thing is going to have more work done to it, but I'd like to see what you think of the posing, brothers.

"Don't forget your stick Commissar."

"Rather sir, wouldn't want to face a traitor heavy weapon nest without this!"

O-ho-ho yes.

Commissar looks good - I also love how even more arrogant he looks with the cane. And the Medic looks excellent!

I love these Vostroyans! Always been tied for my favorite in terms of IG factions, with steel legion of course  I Have always been wanting GW to pump out some plastics for the different factions but alas, with the new release, that seems unlikely for the foreseeable future. That Commissar is looking particularly brutal as well; loving that sculpted fist. Keep it up dude these guys look awesome!

Awesome sculpting on these last two, man. Love the Commissar's poise.

I think these two are becoming my favorites of the whole squad. The medicae because it's a very involved conversion that is actually turning out well, and the commissar for the exact opposite - it's such a simple conversion that works remarkably well. I LOVE when the simple ones turn out like that.

Bloody hell

This time you knocked them out of the park

Amazing stuff

Thanks, brother! *bow*

I love how the cane made the Commissar look even more arrogant. The medic looks much much better than the original.

It does make him look a bit haughty and self-important, doesn't it?

For when he wants to strike at his normal initiative.

I honestly didn't intend for that to be the effect of adding the cane, but getting surprised like that is one of the reasons I loved converting figures so much.

I bought a handful of the Steel Legion guys when they first came out, fully intending to start an army and paint them up as the awesome looking illustration of the "Death Korps of Krieg" in an older IG Codex, but even then the cost was prohibitive.

How do you know if you've been spending too much time on your hobby? When you start dreaming about it.

Last night I had a dream of the commissar standing in the middle of a big squad of Vostroyans, all of whom were crouched down behind cover, waiting anxiously as a horde of orks barreled towards them. He stood there, completely exposed to the wild fire of the greenskins, tapping the cane against the epaulet on his shoulder.

You might have noticed there were any pictures of the medicae from behind, and that's because until tonight, the rear of the coat was just a roughed in 'form' of GS waiting for a top layer to be added and sculpted into cloth.

There was a big, empty gap between the canteen and the medicae bag, and remembering that he is not wearing the re-breather, I decided he would be carrying it on his belt, stowed in a weatherproof pouch. I wanted to give the appearance of a good amount of weight in the pouch, because the masks look pretty substantial, so I sculpted in a lot of deep folds and angled the bottom end of it appropriately. It took me three tries to get it just how I wanted, and I've been looking at it so long tonight, I'm not sure how successful I was at the illusion I was going for. What do you think, brothers?

Oh, and here's a teaser for something that will happen after the ETL is over, as it would take up too much time right now:

I like the medic. He looks ready to do his job with all the bags of equipment.

Indeed he does. I imagine the big bag on his left side to be all the bandages, counterseptic, synthskin spray, etc, and the smaller, flat one on his right hip is all of his instruments.

So, I have completed the modeling phase for the last 3 members of the command squad!

(OK, so he's not actually completed... I forgot about the boots again and didn't notice until cropping this photo, so I'll do that tomorrow)

And the standard bearer:

Instead of futzing with another eye, I decided to give him a metal patch over his left eye. :smile.:

I got most of the command squad base coated with the green coats and bronze armor today, but life kept rearing its ugly head so I didn't make as much progress as I wanted.

I did get more work done on the commander, but the camera and/or lights weren't cooperating. I finally gave up after 9-10 tries and went the best one, even though the colors were washed out, and by the time I adjusted them enough to be a close match for the figure, the face looks terrible. Ah well.

You can't really tell, but the interior of his coat is a much darker blue-green color than the outside, which is blue-grey.

Feth. Those look terrific.

As soon as I've got some spare time and money, I'm ordering all the stuff I need for sculpting and am going to get on with it. It's too tempting not to, especially when someone showcases stuff like this.

Seriously, this is damn impressive stuff. Next time Forge World open up one of their sculpting careers, you are damn well going to send your CV and sculpting examples! And if you don't, I'll find a way to do it for you ;)

Yes, you should get some sculpting stuff! I have a thread going in the tutorial forum right now asking people what they might like to see in a sculpting tutorial, so if you have any suggestions, please add them to the thread or shoot me a PM.

And wow, Ludovic, I think that's the best compliment I've ever gotten on my sculpting. :D I think I'm decent, but Forge World? I wish. Maybe someday when I've gotten better.

Have you considered a decorative wood casing for the las rifle(s)?  Afterall, you're playing off the Russian theme with these guys, think of them as futuristic Kalashnikovs!

  • 2 weeks later...

First it was the Vostroyans for my ETL vow, and the Muse keeps steering me back toward 40k when I keep trying to make that left turn to the 30th millennium.

What is it this time? Something no one ever expects...

I've found myself poring over quite a few websites recently, looking at Inq28 stuff, or for those unfamiliar with the term, the old Inquisitor skirmish game played with regular 28mm 40k figures. I bought the rulebook when it came out, and still have it, but back then when the Inquisitor figures were still being sold on shelves, most people I talked to about playing it were too intimidated by the cost of the figures, the much larger scale (that would require all new table scenery), and trying to convert the bigger figures. I've you ever had to cut a pewter 28mm figure apart, then you can imagine what it would be to hack up a 54mm version. I suggested we use regular 40k figures and adjust the distances, but even then, I couldn't get a group willing to try it.

So, for almost the entire time I've been in this hobby, the idea for Inq28 has been in the back of my head. It always appealed to me because, in my opinion, the Inquisitor war band has more conversion possibilities than any faction out there (that you can get away with and not be called out by fluffmongers) with the exception of Orks.

Some great examples of the Inq28 stuff can be found on these very boards by GuitaRasmus, Rob451, lamby, and Lord Commander Scrymgeour, and I have enjoyed reading through each of their threads and marveling at where their imaginations have taken them.

For me, I'm still in the planning stages right now, but I do have a little bit to show. Before I started this Thread of Stuff and completely gave up on playing 40k, I had been working on an Angels of Vengeance army and wanted to make my own version of the Master of the Deathwing, using Belial's rules. I want the armor to look a lot different than other terminators so I started chopping up a Grey Knight. I got to this point before I floundered on yet another project:

http://i.imgur.com/Z93R0Xz.jpg

Ugh, that grey stuff was so old and difficult to work with. *shudder*  Anyway, I'm re-purposing this half-finished conversion for my jump onto the war bandwagon. Back then, some folks asked me how I did the chest piece, which is the front of a PA GK torso, and I never had a picture of it. Today, I cut off all the old grey stuff and snapped a pic of it.

Since this will be a human in the TDA and not a post-human member of the Adeptus Astartes, I wanted it to look different, and not just a GK termie with a different head plopped into the neck hole. In this next pic, you can see where I've started to reshape the lower leg with the careful application of a Dremel, hobby blade, files, and sandpaper:

http://i.imgur.com/6nYN0r7.jpg

I think this still conveys the durability and solidness of the TDA, but humanizes it a bit more by narrowing the waist and chest, and reshaping the legs.

I also have one more little teaser of something I've started to convert because I don't want to use the original figures.

Good to see you back in 40k, and looking at something I've been debating myself. How did you get your hands on the rules for INQ28?

Terminator looks good so bad, BCK, and your mystery project *cough*SoB*cough* has my interest piqued. Looking forward to seeing more :)
