Got a few different updates today.

First, I found my resin IF and Deathwatch termie shoulder pads I was looking for.

Second, I got some work done on the starboard broadside for my Repulsive-class.

And third, in the vein of reviving old junk, I dusted this guy off.

5+ years ago, whenever it was I tried to save this failed old conversion, I was pretty happy with the work. Today? Not so much. I think I'll rework him some and turn him into a chaplain.

It's an old terminator captain that's long out of print. This is the best pic I could find of the original model:

This is how it sat in my bitz box for years:

I don't remember what kind of conversion I was trying to do originally, but I messed it up bad. Five or more years ago I tried to bring it back to life with how it looks currently, and now I'm going to have a second go at it.

True. You know I haven't seen this new limited edition guy cos everywhere I bounce the image is broken or pages are down.

Besides, sometimes a clean, minimalist conversion is what catches people's eyes. I mean, amongst, say, a clutter of high kibble content figures, one clean, crisp, minimalist figure is the one that goes "hello...pick me"

Well in my thinking anyway....

Today, I bring you a tale of two arbites.

In the Rogue Trader rpg game I'm running, we each have two characters in two separate parties that are each off doing their thing for the larger goal of the campaign. My brother wanted to make an arbitrator from the Dark Heresy game, but there's a lot of room for some exploitation when advancing a DH character up to 5k+ xp, so I fiddled around a bit and made an arbiter (note the name change) using the arch-militant as a base. I also gave him a special ability based on the one from DH 2nd Ed where he can use his willpower to test for a small selection of skills important to an arbites. His character's background is that he worked undercover for an Inquisitor for some years and left his service to the holy Ordo Xenos burnt out and addicted to obscura and alcohol. Though still an arbites, his character doesn't dress like one and still does undercover work in some of the seedier places in the Koronus expanse.

The base figure for this is Alister Caine from the Warmachine game.

And current progress.

I haven't done much for the torso armor aside from the base because my brother hasn't decided what he wants the armor to look like yet.

On the flip side of this coin, my brother will be running a Dark Heresy game that also ties into the RT game, and I'll be playing an arbites character as well, but there won't be any of this undercover and deception stuff. No, full on arbites armor and combat shotgun awesomeness!

Didn't notice the plastic dust on him before I tookthe pics, d'oh! A few more details to add and he'll be done. As you can probably tell from the jacket, he began life as the lead Chaos Cultist from the Dark Vengeance set. Here's how he looked before I got heavy into the greenstuffing.

Those arms and that shotgun experiment didn't work out, so I modified some Cadian bits. :)

Thanks, Olis!

You've managed to to make him less like Judge Dredd, without losing the aesthetic. The modified cadian helm works really well.

I like everything about the arbites armor except the helmet. When I happened across the one I used, I knew I had to do an arbites figure with it at some point.

I also forgot to post some of the art that inspired my choices with the second figure.

For those who haven't heard, Fantasy Flight Games will no longer be using the GW license to make games. While I really enjoy the 40k rpg titles they made, and I'm sad there won't be any new ones coming along, the biggest thing I'm going to miss from FFG dropping the license is the absolutely huge influx of art their rpgs contributed to the 40k universe. I have so much of their art saved on my hard drive and go through it on a regular basis when I'm hunting for inspiration. I'm already feeling the sting of the loss of the art that could have been, but I'm grateful for what we got.

So, after a long night, I read the entire thread in one go. I must say, very impressive. I am so jealous of the skills- but it also makes me want to try stuff. Keep up the incredible work.

Oh, if you want another Repulsive GC, PM me. I have one lying around just gathering dust.

Wow, that's impressive! While I appreciate the dedication, going through all that in one setting also shows how many things I started and never finished.

True, but I've really enjoyed the journey and sometimes that is better than the destination.

Since my hobby butterfly has hopped back onto the Inquisition stuff for now, I decided to have a go at one of my favorite pieces of art from the old Inquisition rule book (being the old 52mm game, not an Inquisition codex for 40k). This cheery fellow right here:

I mirrored the image to use as reference because the power fist I wanted to use for him is a righty. I have some WHFB Chaos Marauder figures from waaay back when they were brand new and thought about using one for the base, but the leg poses were a little more goofy and the musculature a little more flabby than I remembered. I chopped up the legs and straightened them out, shaved down the torso, and tried out a few pieces for this first sketch.

Not a perfect match to the art, but I'm not trying to copy it down to the last detail. Even though it won't really be visible when I'm finished, I wanted to sculpt in the rough shapes of the torso muscles for how buff I imagined this guy to be, starting with the upper areas.

Looking at the pics afterward I now realize I need to lengthen his legs some, but that will be easy enough to do. For his tattered hood/cloak thing, I'll probably use my tissue technique.

Gah, 54mm, right.  I was tired when I made that post.

More work done on him.

Legs lengthened with first pass of GS done on them and the upper body shape is finished now that the arms line up with no gaps (I know there is a slight one on the right arm but it's just sitting on the pin with no glue or blue tac). He doesn't skip leg day, but the reason they're a bit thin right now is to allow me plenty of depth to sculpt in the folds of the pants at a later stage.

The story I've come up with for this guy is that he is a space marine who didn't make the grade for some reason and instead of being put down or turned into a servitor, he was mind wiped and given to the Inquisition. While not as impressive as a fully trained and power-armored Astartes, he is still a very capable acolyte.

Got some work done on the gunslinger guy during the blackout.

Pants done, holster for the now modified plasma pistol on his left leg and the holster for the long revolver looking gun from the artwork on his right hip; I decided after I had already finished the pants to put a strap on the holster so I'll be going back later to resculpt the pants around the straps. The belt is some leftover solder that a I crimped flat for the tow cable holders on my Macharius tank.

I would have done more, but I'm at a stopping point trying to figure out what do about something in the artwork.

What the feth is that stuff on his back? For years when all I had of this pic was a small version in the Inquisitor rule book, I thought it was possibly drug injectors similar to the arco-flagellant model. Once I got a marginally better look with a larger image, I thought they looked more like exhaust stacks for the generator that his pistol and power fist are connected to, but now I'm not sure. The two leftmost ones might be exhaust stacks, and the right one might be... a camera? A small weapon? A lamp? Also, originally thought they were all in a line but now I can tell the far left is in front of the middle, which is in front of the right one. Unless I, or someone else, can come up with an idea of what they might be that's good enough for me to try to replicate them, I'm just going to skip 'em.
