Brother-Chaplain Kage
Aaaand updates! Lots of sculpting on the torso and head today, and the front of the torso is pretty much done. A comparison to the old torso first! http://i.imgur.com/EsFGAEp.png Here you can see that I made his eyes and the surrounding area larger. http://i.imgur.com/sxC0LN4.png Still have a lot to do with the back and the arms before I figure out what I'm going to do with the legs. Brother Desultor
As always, thanks for the kind words, brothers. I think I'll explain the difference with the the track mechanism is that this is a lost 30k version of a super-heavy. The tracks are from a 1/35 scale German Maus tank, and are actually cut down a little because they're normally too wide for this. http://i.imgur.com/rMX7nku.png Normal Maus tracks, cut down tracks, Baneblade tracks, and the vinyl Panther tracks I used for my Macharius. Unless you want to spend a lot of money for this conversion, I wouldn't suggest using the Maus kit to do it because it's around $70 US or 56.8 GBP. I got mine for free from my brother when he found he had lost some of the parts in a move and was planning on trashing it. I don't want to disrupt your current focus by raising this older topic but I've just received an email from Ammo with information that they are going to be releasing 1/35th scale Maus tracks in September - http://www.migjimenez.com/en/preorder/1194-135-maus-tracks.html?utm_source=AMMO+News&utm_campaign=cdfb594293-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_06_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_b508638084-cdfb594293-425454517 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/278032-bcks-thread-of-stuff-super-heavy/page/120/#findComment-4811481 Share on other sites

Augustus b'Raass
Oh man, that body is TIGHT and RIPPED! I like where this is going. Good job recovering the snapped drill bit from the body - it happened to me too once, and it's a real hassle if that happens. I love his upper body muscles so far and am looking very much forward to what you're going to do with his back - that should be interested. You've also started off nicely with the legs - the only nitpick I have is that his Vastus Medialis muscles are far too big in comparison with the surrounding muscle tissue. Perhaps you can address that? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/278032-bcks-thread-of-stuff-super-heavy/page/120/#findComment-4811669 Share on other sites
Brother-Chaplain Kage
@Brother Ophamion: Thanks for the heads up! @Hydra: Roll with the change, brother. I think the inclusion of xenos will benefit the board more in the long run than their exclusion, and the majority of the members who have commented about the change are glad that they can now share their other armies with the rest of this awesome community. Glad you like the BT though. :) @Auggie: Thanks! Yeah, I got a little out of hand with the medialis, but I could say that he's not human and that's normal, but I'm probably going to cover the legs in armor since I'm skipping the breastplate. Maybe some on the shoulders and forearms too. Brother-Chaplain Kage
He's going to have an axe in each hand, which you can see today! The shoulders have been mostly finished, more work done to the eyes, the arms positioned and the axes are roughly constructed. http://i.imgur.com/UZedFnt.png The rear half of the shoulders and the remained of the back will be the last thing finished because I'm trying to figure out a way to make the wings detachable along with the musculature I'm going to sculpt on them, so this guy will be easier to transport (if it ever comes to that) and so I don't have to paint him with the wings on. Every pic I took from the right side showing the other axe came out blurry so I'll try again later. Brother-Chaplain Kage
This morning I mixed up some GS with the intention of finishing the upper arms - triceps and all that - and a voice in the back of my head said "Nope, leg armor", and so that's what I did. http://i.imgur.com/fftNT4g.png Being 20 or more feet tall, I figure he rarely fights stuff the same height and needs a good amount of armor to protect the legs from the bothersome little mortals that rush forward to volunteer their skulls for Khorne. Now, the curved armor plates I think I have down but chainmail has never been my strong suit and I've never attempted either doing it on such a round surface before or so much of it at the same time. I did practice, first with some Blue Tac on my little glass tile I use for stuff like this, and then with putty on the tile and it worked fairly well - once I moved to the 'Thirster, that changed a lot because it was much more difficult to get an even layer of putty everywhere on the leg. On top of all that, I did a 60/40 mix of ProCreate to GS with each mixed with more hardener in the hopes that it would be more firm while I was sculpting on it, and it worked somewhat, but after 20-25 minutes or so it started sticking to my tool and NOT sticking to the model, even with liberal amounts of oil! I've never had the mix of the two do that before and I ended up cutting away the last sections I sculpted so I could put him in the oven, cure what was there, and then go back and do the rest. >_< Brother Aiwass 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/278032-bcks-thread-of-stuff-super-heavy/page/120/#findComment-4816631 Share on other sites

Daemon2027
From the pic, the chain mail looks awesome. Chandrian
i really appreciate all the pictures you take and the work you put into your GS. Seeing step by step how your model has started and how adding muscles, even though they get covered with armour, pays off for the overall shape. I usually struggle with GS armour, it always ends up looking to flat or to beefy; now i know i should really consider doing a layer of muscle/something before armour! Brother-Chaplain Kage
Thanks, brothers. @Daemon2027: I've struggled with chainmail, believe me. I am planning on doing some spikes on the armor, but not sure where yet. @Chandrian: I post a lot WIP pics for a few reasons: 1) Partly for myself because I've looked at older figures and couldn't remember how I did something and 2) For other members to see how the figures go together, especially the sculpting. I think people doing WIP pics of their stuff benefits the hobby as a whole and love seeing how other people got from start to finish. I'm always a little sad inside when I see some amazing conversion without any WIP pics to get an idea of how they did it. For those interested in how I did my chainmail, I followed the technique in this video: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/278032-bcks-thread-of-stuff-super-heavy/page/120/#findComment-4817027 Share on other sites
Brother-Chaplain Kage
A few days ago I nabbed some Wave Serpents with the Forge World upgrade kits off eBay for a decent price - just slightly more than one of the new plastic ones - and they've just arrived and after a quick look, they're gonna need some TLC. One has a Bright Lance turret and the other has a Starcannon turret, which seems to have broken in the mail... as if sensing what GW's nerf did to them. The paint is pretty thick and some of the resin parts are really rough, and right now I'm not sure if they're recasts or not, but the undersides of the turrets are unpainted and the color looks authentic. I really wish FW wouldn't stop selling conversion kits once GW finally got around to making the full kit in plastic, 'cause I don't really care for the plastic Serpent; the turret is boring and sits up too high and the shield generators look like re-used parts from the back of a wraithlord or war walker. Some of you old timers might remember when the FW kit came out and that one guy at the LGS who could actually afford one or more of them was the source of a lot of envy. Some loved its looks, some hated it, but everyone could agree that when there was no official kit from GW, it was much better than the old plastic spoon turret conversion job. AWWWW YEAH! I remember people making copies of the template from that old White Dwarf issue to cut out the Serpent Shield Generator plates from plasticard or cardboard and using cut up sprue trees for the support struts. There were two guys who played Eldar every weekend at my LGS tourney and both of them had two Serpents like this, both with twin Starcannons (when they were really gross in 3rd) and it was so satisfying to eventually knock them down with the stupid amount of heavy weapons fire it took. Oh, and while inspecting my two new transports, one of them had a little surprise on the bottom. Now I'm off to buy a gallon of Simple Green to start soaking these in. Calyptra
I remember the spoon conversions, but I don't think I've seen the Forge World ones before. Those are way prettier than the GW ones, which I've always thought managed to take the sleek, elegant Falcon and make it awkward and ungainly. The crocthirster is looking great! Brother-Chaplain Kage
You've never seen the FW conversion kit? *gasp!* Though technically, this is the FW Wave Serpent Type I and the later Type II is pretty much how the current one looks but in resin. My sculpting mojo just wasn't working today so I decided to clean up these Serpents and think I did pretty well. I'm certain these are original FW too, because I had to use a blade to scape away some superglue in spots, and remove some mold lines, and the resin didn't give off that odor you normally get from recasts. The one thing that didn't get as clean as the rest is the bright lance piece and I think it has something to do with whatever that metallic paint was on it, because it's still tacky and almost sticky after several scrubbings. Lexington
Man, I miss that old FW upgrade kit. Brother-Chaplain Kage
Ok, crazy new conversion idea time. Here we have a lovely and canonically rare variant of the Falcon grav-tank called a Warp Hunter. http://i.imgur.com/YGX1aRm.png I like it. I want one. The problem is that Forge World doesn't sell just the conversion bits, it's 65-ish USD to get the whole kit, and all the ones I've seen on eBay recently are painted in colors I would never use (I mean, I'm going with the studio posterboy Saim-Hann scheme!) and sell for at least the same price as a new kit. Another problem I have with it, as much as I love the idea of a flying gun, is that it just doesn't look right to me the way the weapon climbs up the slope of the body while the barrel looks like it should continue straight into the tank. Like it should be mounted more centrally into the body, kinda like this: http://i.imgur.com/t41KOdn.png That being the Lynx, which is truly a flying gun. So my idea is to chop up a Falcon and try to make what is essentially a smaller version of the Lynx with a big ol' Distortion weapon... which I will have to scratch build because the Cobra gun is too big, there is no D gun on the Wraithknights or Phantom Titans, and the next smallest one is from the heavy weapons platform and is far too small. I hadn't planned on starting work on it so soon, but the voice inside my head just kept on and on about it so I had to scratch that itch (for now) and do a little work. Here we have one of my many Falcons and the red portion shows approximately what I plan to remove from the body, with my pencil scratchings still visible on the hull. http://i.imgur.com/KlP3eer.png Now, my razor saw is going to have some difficulty trying to navigate the curves of that cut because the blade is not the same width all the way through. It's definitely no band saw. What do I have to solve this problem? A Dremel that I can put a drill bit into, woot! http://i.imgur.com/TujuHcJ.png Which lets the razor saw make short work of the cutting job. http://i.imgur.com/XqLuj2b.png Then I start removing the exposed inner framework and cleaning up some of the ragged edges of the cut. http://i.imgur.com/4KKSsza.png http://i.imgur.com/22tQpez.png And just for giggles, I dropped the D-gun from my Cobra in it. Obviously, way too big, but it does give an idea of where it's going. http://i.imgur.com/TIpupmC.png It also showed me that even with a smaller gun there's not much room there and I will need to completely separate the hull into 2 parts and build a new connection point more like the Lynx to properly situate the gun and mount. And if anyone out there has a Lynx, preferably unassembled, and willing to take some reference pics for me, shoot me a PM please! :D Noserenda, Brother Aiwass, Sgt. Glad to see they are getting love and the new mini lynx is off to a great start. Are you going to use green stuff to fill in the rear of that vehicle to cover up and support the section that has been cut out?
