Turning out really well so far. Right man for the job

Thanks. I haven't made much more progress on him because I've been waiting for the techmarine with servo harness I ordered to arrive at my LGS so I can get the arm position down before I do the final sculpting on the legs, but it still hasn't arrived.

In other news, Brother-Captain Arkhan has challenged me to complete my Horus model for Augustus' Arena event, and here's some progress.

The left arm has been pinned and I'm almost finished with repositioning the right arm:

There was quite a lot of space to fill on the back of the arm with the new position and getting all that to line up in the tight space of his armpit has been fun.

The pteruges on the left arm come molded in place while the ones on the right are left separate for you to attach, and for the life of me, I can't seem to find how they're supposed to line up properly, even before I changed the right arm. While I don't mind those things attached to the shoulder pads of Horus and other figures, like the Cataphractii, I'm not really that much a fan of the ones hanging from the belt so I don't think I will be including them on the big man.

For something like horns or flowing hair, I would use some sort of wire or rod to build on.

I've been real busy with work the last few days so I haven't been able to work on Argos much but I did manage to get some stuff done last night and earlier today.

I'm thinking now that should have cut one of the legs away from the body for ease of sculpting because working on the back of the that left leg and the foot was a completely nightmare. I wanted to finish the foot in one go, but I kept having so much trouble with getting the sculpting tools in an around that area that the greenstuff was starting to firm up, so I'll come back and finish it after work tonight.

wow man, just.......damn. that is amazing!

Sad to say that life has been kicking my butt for the last 4-6 weeks and I haven't gotten much of anything done on either my own stuff or the Brother Argos figure, but I forced myself to get going last night and have some progress to show.

The right leg looks bigger than it really is from this angle but I might trim it down a little, and once the big tabard-of-cables is done, you won't even notice. Next up is to sculpt the flames on the right leg, do the cable tabard and start building the abdominal armor. I'm also working on the axe but don't have much to show just yet.

Thanks, Ace.

I agree, Arkhan. My creativity has been crushed by life stuff the last month so I'm pretty certain I can't make the deadline for the arena.

Never try and finish something if your heart isn't in it. You'll hate the results. Especially with something that looks so good.

The Argos figure isn't too much of a worry since I'm following closely to the artwork, but yeah, I know exactly what you mean. It's especially bad with my writing when I try to force it.

Thanks guys, and that's high praise from you, Augustus.

Got the flames on the lower right leg, cable tabard and armor done, and starting on left arm.

next up will be the abdominal and hip armor and maybe some progress on the axe.

I recently took the plunge on a squad of Cataphractii, simply because they're the prettiest TDA models ever, and am considering an ETL pledge to help me get them done. (Stop laughing.)

I've been reconsidering the direction to take the Crimson Sons while discussing an alternate Heresy idea with some folks, so this could give me a viable excuse to include terminators in my army and fluff where I didn't want to include them previously because the Company is all about the stealth stuff.

Anyway, here's a few test ideas for the Praetor to lead the unit: first up is a stand-in for a chainglave and a "come get some" left hand pose.

The other is a shield on the left arm, similar attitude.

Thoughts?

I go for the shield aswell. Of the 2 poses it is the better one in my opinion.

The outstretched arm looks more like he is casting a conjuration. For come at me bro, maybe turn the hand 180 degrees

When I did my legion Praetor, I considered a shield also.

Might look suitably come at me bro if you  turned the head slightly?

Another thought, what about putting the chain glaive on the outstretched arm (left) pointing as if issuing a challenge?
Put the sheld or bare hand on the other arm and then you keep both Praetor shoulder pads the same?

Yeah, I'm really leaning toward the shield as well, but I forgot to mention in the above post that I didn't want to chop up the Praetor arm just to test fit a shield, so I subbed in a regular Cat arm.

That's a very good idea...

Im not sure about the shield - but because of the sword. The shield is so massive and brutal, an 'elegant' weapon like a glaive just doesnt seem right. If you'd change the glaive for a hammer or maul, that'd make it work much better. For me, at leats.

On the other pose, you said you're going for the 'come at me bro' look. May I suggest turning the hand around so it's palm up? That would make it look like he's gesturing to 'come at him'. Unless he hails from a culture where the come at me bro is pal down, like most northern african and west asian cultures.... ;)

I can see where Augustus is coming from.. The chain glaive is most  likely a 2 handed weapon, so maybe a shield although cool looking might not be the most practical. Swapping the hands over so chain glaive pointing out issuing a challege and an opn hand on the other side ready to grip the chain glaive haft when his challenge has been accepted?

If you then want to keep the shield maybe make a mount and attach it to his fore-arm (vambrace?) so he has a free hand for fighting?

Maybe 'come at me bro' wasn't the best choice of words. I was going for something more like this with the hand:

than, say, Bruce Lee's famous gesture. And you can't just flip the hand over, because I tried it and it looks like crap. You'd need to cut the arm at the elbow and rotate the forearm. I'm a little hesitant to do that with Cataphractii arms because the huge shoulder armor leaves a relatively short amount of arm to work with, and there's the pteruges or whatever hanging from the armor which would also need to be dealt with.

Here's a go with the weapon in the left hand. I couldn't get the shield hand to stay on so I just threw the blastgun on there. (Ignore it, it looks bad.)

The GK spear is just a place holder for now. I'm going to convert ten of these axes:

into chainglaives. I don't necessarily think a glaive is too elegant a weapon to be used with a shield, but you do have me thinking about swapping it out for something else. I could go with a paragon blade and give it a different form, like a massive hammer or mace. That does seem more appropriate with a character I've nicknamed The Juggernaut.
