I think it will look good with the hand scuplted on. You maybe could have just it hanging from a sling, although do you do that with shotguns? Personally i think its fine the way it is. Oh and btw, thanks to you im now getiing some militia bits to build my own little group of chaos worshiping renegades. They fit nicly with the Xanthian inquisitor and his Alpha Legion buddies though.

You know that phrase about never saying never? Or...

Long story short, I'm doing some true scale marines. I always figured I would end up doing at least one of them somehow or another, like... to see if I could do it and how well, or maybe someone challenged me to it, but I never expected I would be wanting to do it. See, I was jotting down some ideas for my eventual Ordo Xenos warband and I knew I'd want to include at least one Deathwatch marine. Possibly three. No, five. Yes, five will do.

I have no real issue with the dimensions of the marines as they come from GW or FW except needing a little more length in the abdomen, but in one of these Inq28 warbands I want the size of the marines to be proportionate to the humans and that means true scale. It might be art scale, in fact. If I'm going to take the plunge, might as well go all in, right?

I want each of the marines to be very characterful and detailed, and I've already been talking over ideas of individual roles and chapters with some of the other mods. Here's how it stands at the moment:

1) Commander - White Scars.

2) Chaplain - 85% on it being a Black Templars marine. Open to other possibilities.

3) Devastator - Space Wolves.

4) Tac - Crimson Fists, Iron Hands, Salamanders, Celestial Lions or... maybe Astral Claws before that whole traitor thing. As much as I love me some Crismson Fists, if I do Templars and Fists, that's two chapters from the Imperial Fists which I would want to avoid.

For the fifth slot, I'm torn between an apothecary, assault marine (with or without jump pack?), or something else. Recon? Librarian? I'm leaning towards a Red Scorpion apothecary because they have a crapload of them and are kinda known for that, and I remembered I also have the Commander Culln figure and a lovely Red Scorp terminator shoulder pad.

If assault, maybe... Raven Guard? Wolvie-type lightning claws with blades made of real metal.

Libby, I would definitely want to recreate my Angels of Vengeance guy.

However, can't have a Templar and a Libby in the same group. Decisions, decisions.

Or maybe a second tac marine with a specialist weapon?

I also come bearing some pics of some early sketching out of the Long Fang to give an idea of the scale I'm going for.

And starting to get the aggravating arm pose down.

Until I took the first pic of this guy, I didn't realize how much the fuel canister thing on top of the plascannon obscured his face so I did a quick and dirty job with my clippers so I could get the pics done and it will be cleaned up later. Why this old metal plascannon, btw? 'Cause it's the best looking one GW ever did, imho. Yes, it's gonna be an unholy bitch getting that huge chunk of pewter to stay put and I'm gonna have to seriously pin his lightweight finecast self to the base, but these are the sacrifices we make for our own personal rule of cool.

BCK doing truescale Deathwatch? Ohohoho, this shall be a treat indeed, that Long Fang already looks promising.

As for suggestions on Marines and Chapters, how about this; make the Chaplain a Salamander, that way you can keep the fire and zeal aspect while including some visual flair via sallie decorations. Fluff-wise he can help keep the team together through the teamwork-centred ethos of the Promethean Creed, plus he'd be less opposed to Psykers than his Templar counterpart.

I also suggest making the Tac Marine of slot 4 a Celestial Lion, fluff wise he could be there at the Inquisition's "request" to keep him from assisting in his Chapter's rebuilding, or he might have been in the DW at the time of the Lions' decimation, but still bound by his Oath. He could also have a close friendship with the Long Fang as both marines' Chapters have stood up to the Inquisition, albeit with more success for the Wolves. Nevertheless, the two can relate to some degree, maybe the Wolf even promises to speak with Logan Grimnar about assisting the Lions rebuild.

Just a few ideas for you, hope you find them useful/interesting. :)

Wow, BCK doing Truescale. This'll be something.

Wouldn't the black of a Raven Guard assault marine kinda disappear in all that black and metal? I like Captainthelion's idea of a blood angel (successor), as the red would be a cool contrast colour.

The plasma cannon looks awesome - though the clipping of the fuel cannister made me sad. His face would've been visible from all other sides, right?

About the truescale arms. You going to use the normal marine arms or try out termie arms eventually? I always thought the GW marine scale arms look way too small on top of a base of termie legs.

BCKage and truescale?

Hnnnnurgh:blink.:

go for the libby for sure!

I might, thanks to a suggestion below.

Woooooooo! I'm very excited to see how your rendition of true scaling will turn out! You are an excellent artist and I'm sure they will end up looking great

I'm a little nervous about it, but it's not uncommon when going into a conversion I've never attempted before.

Actually, you make some really good points, and when I first thought of the Celestial Lion I didn't know anything about them at all... I just thought their paint scheme looked neat. I read their entire entry on the 40k wikia and am definitely going to include one now.

Salamanders chaplain sounds good, too. I mean, I had to include a chappy... they're kinda my thing, and I couldn't resist doing a big one. Also, I'm on team brown skin, not team drow skin, but I'm thinking the Wolf will be the only one not wearing his damn cover.

Wow, it sure is cold in here...

The Long Fang is already looking awesome, and it's a great choice of plasma cannon. Have you considered a Flesh Tearer Assault Marine? Or another Blood Angel successor? They're about as iconic Assault Marines as the Raven Guard. Could be fun.

I have a bad habit of defaulting to red whenever I can't make a decision on what color to paint something, or if it's a color that's a PITA for me so I'm trying to stay away from red for the time being.

Plasma Cannon Wolf is Awesome Wolf!

Partly inspired by the Adrian Smith art piece of a Long Fang with a plascannon, and it seemed like a good choice for a small squad because it can damage high armor targets and has the potential to hit multiple smaller targets.

You should do a Castigator for sure

Very interested in this for obvious reasons. I will be very keen to see these progress. Maybe I will be able to pick up some tips!

Maybe if I expand the ranks a little more, but as mentioned above, I'm trying to stay away from red right now. As for tips, I'm still not real sure how to go about all this. I've been poring over all the true scale tutorials I can find. The Wolf is a bit slapdash because I had several parts together on the desk and thought I'd see how it looked.

You're absolutely right about the Raven Guard; good call. The cannister was in the way from the front, his eventual shoulder pads would obscure it more, and then the giant power back pack as well, so yeah, it had to go. As for the arms, I'm going with Lamenter's updated biggersized marine tutorial where he started using tac marine arms that been extended because if you're decent with the putty, it's much easier to pose tac arms and bulk them up than trying to get the bulkier termie arms to work in the first place.

A small update on the Wolf and I've decided to make him a little bit taller still.

http://i.imgur.com/Go6qJKC.png

Why taller, you might ask?  I said I was going all in on this, and the upper legs looked too short with the rest of him, and it also widened his stance some more to allow him to properly manhandle that plascannon. BTW, he's right about 45mm tall now. :D I've removed the hip armor in anticipation of building up the thighs and might replace them once that is done.

As for the last slot, I'm leaning towards a librarian (unknown chapter so far) or the Red Scorpions apothecary, but still happy to hear opinions on it.

Interesting, your going big big! My 2 alpha Legionnaires come in at around 33-34mm although they are slightly hunched, and some other ones I play in are around 35mm,m. Your ability with GS should get you some nice results in filling those gaps. I prefer using the tac marine arms but due to cost I've been using the terminator arms, but I swear they are shorter then tac marines arms.

Lamenter the person. Err... the screen name. He's known for his art scale big marines and his style will probably be the one I borrow from the most since I also like the huge lower legs and the big barrel chests from the marine artwork.

Hydra, I'm pretty sure the termie arms are probably the same length as tac arms but seem shorter due to being bulkier and harder to pose. While I was digging around for bits I was surprised to find that I have very few 40k plastic tac marine arms left, but I have plenty of plastic chaos stuff (tac and termie) to take up the slack.

I did some measurements when I was lengthening the legs and arms and they should be about right, but we'll see how it progresses. I actually wouldn't mind making the arms a little longer so I could lower the plascannon some 'cause I'd like to do some decorative crap on his chest plate.

Anyway, some more progress, and this might help you guys begin to see what I've been seeing in my head for a few days now.

After bulking up the thighs the greaves were too small so both will have to be enlarged now. I also found another of my old SW heads while rummaging today and I like this one better.

Something that had me laughing like crazy earlier, that I didn't notice until after the putty on the thighs had cured, was how small the butt plate is now.

You think he feels a draft?

*Edit* Almost forgot! See those two orange-y spots on his left upper thigh? That's automotive filler putty, or Bondo, which I used on the thighs and waist not only to save myself from having to use so much ProCreate or greenstuff (it gets harder to control if the putty is deep) but also because it cures solid in about 20 minutes and is much easier to sand than the epoxy putties. Future true scalers might take note of that, and I bought a small tube at Autozone for around 10 bucks that will last me years. The sculpting putty did have a difficult time adhering to it, though, so be sure to put down a few dots of superglue around the area to anchor the putty.
