More updates for the update god!

Bloodthirster is coming along well. Most of the basic sculpting is done on his back, I just need to go back and define his muscles better. I also want to add some traditional Bloodthirster dreadlocks, but that is a challenge for another day.

I didn't like the huge tail that the Balrog model comes with as standard - I didn't feel like it fit his pose. At the same time, I knew it would be too much work to shave back the stump and sculpt some new buttocks (and the traditional Bloodthirster chainmail g-string), so I opted for a more subtle tail option from the Daemon Prince kit. I've also started connecting his armour pieces together using modelling chain.

The Balrog comes with no left hand for holding weapons, so I had to improvise. A bit of cutting and sculpting, and he now carries his whip.

Lastly, I'm also considering using some Heldrake parts for some arm bracers, but I'm still undecided:

What do you guys think?

One of the final hurdles with my Bloodthirster conversion was the head. I originally wanted to try recreating the look of Victor Hardy's infamous GD Slayer Sword-winning Bloodthirster from many years back, but my first attempts at sculpting dreadlocks failed pretty badly.

So it got me thinking - what about some kind of semi-rigid horn-like protrusions that look like hair? Something like Kerrigan from Starcraft, or the Predator:

A bit of digging through my bitz boxes uncovered some great Chaos Spawn pieces that I figured would work well, and so they were puttied and glued into place:

Also sculpted up some hooves, positioning them to try and make him look like he's about to land from flight. I used some Vallejo Plastic Putty (their equivalent of Liquid Green Stuff) to get some texture on the hooves.

He's had plenty of other details added, like chains connecting his various armour pieces to him (and, in some cases, literally looping through his skin) and Khorne symbols added to his axe. Diluted Plastic Putty has again been used on his skin, this time to smooth it over and fill gaps as much as possible.

I'd say he's finally almost at a stage where I can start painting him! I still have a few little details to clean up, but let me know if you have any suggestions!

Thanks guys :)

I'm still up in the air about a loincloth, I'm just having trouble thinking of a suitable one. I'm thinking of chains with hooks, but it' showing to be a pain to position them to match his pose and movement.

Thoughts?

Great looking 'thirster, something I'm still struggling with ideas for.

I'd guess the DP chainmail piece looks too static, even with some hairdryer persuasion. Only other suggestion would be a banner of sorts, with matching movement, cut down to form a loincloth with some skull decoration atop to blend in. I'm guessing it could be a possibility if your greenstuff skills are lacking (like moi).

Should be pretty easy to make something like it with plasticard and gs. Throw some Khorne runes onto it for good measure

BTW, how did You do that texture on the hooves? Just paint it on?

Amazing work!!!!!! Very creative and well executed!!!!

I agree that a loin cloth would really help to complete the piece. How about modelling a chain mail loin cloth like the one worn by Be'lakor?

Ok so I don't know how I've missed this! Loving the Thirster! Stunning conversion, for the loincloth how about looking at the Manticore lord model. Plenty of chains on that kit and they're fairly easy to find on bits sites.

I like the segmented solid plate idea, shouldn't be too hard to make either. I'm balking at the idea of using chain as it's a royal pain to manipulate into dynamic shapes, but something out of plasticard should be easy enough.

Thanks for the ideas, everyone!

The texture was painted on using Vallejo Plastic Putty, which is their equivalent of Liquid Green Stuff - it's cheaper per ml and comes in a dropper bottle to stop it from drying out. It otherwise feels exactly the same to me as LGS.

Awesome Bloodthirster! I feel the hairline needs something to define where the dreadlocks begin and I am all for a loin cloth. Also the bottom of the hooves need some Chaos horse shoes like on the original model.

All great suggestions! I agree with all of these, so it looks like I have a little more work ahead of me. Updates should come shortly.

Ok, I think the Bloodthirster is finally done. If I don't stop now, I might not ever!

I introduce Ka'akshypak'neth, 'The Warlord'.

He has since been shod with some typical Chaos banding:

After a bit of experimenting, I still couldn't come up with a segmented armour loincloth that looked quite right. So, I started digging through my bits boxes and found some nice Chaos shields from Maxmini that I bought a while ago. Had to trim it down a bit to fit, but I think it works well enough, and is sort of an homage to the GW Bloodthirster model.

That's all for today, all C&C welcome!

Wow can't believe I haven't stumbled on this before. Great work on everything, especially the thirster. The spawnlocks was an awesome idea too. Question though, where are the hounds from?

Just to quickly answer this question that I completely missed, the Flesh Hounds pictured earlier in the thread are from Heresy Miniatures:

They're marginally smaller than GW hounds, but still fit the role perfectly IMHO.

Now for something a little different - I want to finish my first squad of 16 Hounds and the Herald who leads them.

These are old GW Hounds (circa 3rd edition 40k)...and bloody hell they are ugly. I think they'll be the front line of the unit so they are the first casualties. First four are about 2/3 of the way through their red skin - still another highlight and a wash to go.

I'm a little more happy with the Herald. A really simple conversion of a Bloodcrusher with a Skulltaker head and a sword from a Heresy Miniatures demon mini. I'm painting it at the same time as my Hounds to break up the monotony and madness of painting such incredibly bad miniatures.

Next four Flesh Hounds are done! These really are terrible models, but they'll do.

But this big guy really took up most of my painting time this past week. You definitely won't want to see this thing bearing down on you.

There are some (relatively) subtle blood effects caking the Juggernaut's mouth and hooves, but it's a little hard to see in the pics.

Roll on the next four Hounds and the Herald to lead them!
