Thanks for the kind words!

Next four Hounds are done:

Which means I can do the glamour shot of the finished (but unbased) squad!

@Tanith Ghost & deathspectersgt7 - thanks guys! The OSL works well enough for a gaming-level mini, I wish I could do it half as well as some of the examples I've seen around here!

@Excessus - I totally agree about the bases (and thanks for the compliment!). I'm yet to really decide on a basing scheme that I'm completely happy with. The most complete Daemon base I have is on the Heldrake:

It was designed to look like the ground was blackening and splitting apart to reveal bloody gashes, kind of like burnt skin. I'm not totally sold on it yet, though - any thoughts?

Some flakes peeling off the sides of the cracks would help convey this look, i think.

It's been a while, but it's finally done! Well, near enough. Some little details will invariably be tweaked over the next few days before I varnish him.

Behold, the (slightly renamed) Bloodthirster Ka'aksh'neth - the War Lord. Cursed by Angron and disgraced in the eyes of Khorne, the War Lord leads the Eternal Host on their quest for redemption.

That Bloodthirster is just amazing! It was already an awesome conversion before, but your paintjob really makes it sing! This guy is everything a Bloodthirster should be and more, and it's a good thing today's Sunday, because I'd be tempted to run out and pick up a Balrog right away, otherwise ;)

Thanks guys! Funnily enough, the axe was one of the things I was tempted to go back and finesse, but after some feedback (and knowing it looks better in person!) I think I might leave it smile.png

Still want to make the eyes more glowy, though.

Also, I'm finally working on some bases. I like to imagine the daemonic invasion literally turning the planet into a living creature, only to torment it with flame, burning the flesh and causing bloody cracks to appear between charred skin. Results are reasonably promising so far - I'll post some pics up shortly smile.png

Biohazard: many thanks, your work has been a massive inspiration to me so it is great to hear such feedback!

Forte: thanks mate! I don't comment much in your thread, but I've been following it closely and keep finding myself wanting to do some Slaanesh followers/daemons. Much appreciated.

chaplainmikey: glad to hear it, thanks!

And now, some progress smile.png (Please excuse the overexposed pictures. One of these days I'll learn to photograph during the day...)

I can now finally show off my first completed squad - with added bases:

I learned a great deal from making the bases for these guys. They started off with a flesh colour and a "burned" effect around the edges of each piece, but I decided that it looked too busy and so ended up simplifying them. The simple, charred black colour with the blood (which is simply just water effects with red food colouring) flowing through the crevices works well enough for me.

I've also been busy on another newcomer: Be'lakor! He's still very much WIP.

deathspectersgt7 - thanks! There are a couple more little details like that on the bases scattered through the unit. They're certainly fun to make.

Darth Mustard - the food colouring idea came when I realised that inks and washes sadly don't mix with water effects. But food colouring, with quite a bit of mixing and shaking, works pretty well. I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Now, I proudly present a completed Be'lakor! He looked very shiny in the last post (one thing I don't like about Secret Weapon washes), but a good coat of matt varnish has made him a lot more photogenic.

Thanks Kael24!

Ok, so it has been a while since I last posted - but I have not been entirely idle! I now have another two units of Bloodletters that are fully based. The whole idea was that I wanted to make the ground look like it had been turned into a living creature, only for it to be tortured and burned. The burned ground is blackened and splitting, revealing bloody flesh below.
It all started with a pile of bases and cork tiles:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v23/cheex/khorne/daemons/CYMERA_20140419_090456_zpsgxxvtidp.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v23/cheex/khorne/daemons/CYMERA_20140419_090718_zpsymziqorz.jpg
The one problem I've noticed with most cork tile bases is that they tend to be very flat at the top and have little height variation, so to get around this I've started cutting some of them in half with a knife. This gives me more options for model heights, which will make the unit more interesting, and will add instant texture to the bases.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v23/cheex/khorne/daemons/CYMERA_20140419_091525_zpsdbwngfay.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v23/cheex/khorne/daemons/CYMERA_20140419_091537_zpstgmsqpzq.jpg
Some of them also got a bit of trimming around the edges for more variation. The trimmings were kept aside and used for filling some gaps and adding texture.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v23/cheex/khorne/daemons/CYMERA_20140419_091626_zpsot6exrzd.jpg
Broken cork tiles were then pieced together to try and make the ground look like it is breaking apart and stuck to the bases using PVA. A bit of an overdone Daemons basing theme, but I'm fine with that!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v23/cheex/khorne/daemons/CYMERA_20140419_093123_zpsff6epsl7.jpg
Not shown - I also use Vallejo Plastic Putty (their equivalent of GW's Liquid Green Stuff) to add more "liquid" texture to the cracks.
And then onto the painting. They were basecoated in black and drybrushed with GW Administratum Grey, and the cracks painted with VGC Parasite Brown, Dwarf Skin and then drybrushed with Pale Flesh. Bear with me on this!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v23/cheex/khorne/daemons/CYMERA_20140423_172126_zpsdmnunu2m.jpg
Finally, the cracks are filled with a mixture of Vallejo Water Effects and red food colouring. After a couple of coats (letting the mixture dry for about 24 hours between each coat), you're left with a nice glob of bloody flesh! smile.png

And, of course, the fully painted and based Bloodletter horde!
