I pretty much swear by clayshapers. Occasionally I'll use a metal tool, but easily 95% of all my sculpting is done with the regular sized clayshapers, not the miniature size. I usually use greenstuff, but tried some brownstuff for one of them.

Here's the ones I did:

Ha. Just took delivery of some eBayed White Scars metal figs, biker torsos, shields etc, and for the small scale chapter insignia, even GW settled for a single zig-zag. :)

Looks like I was onto something when I altered it myself for all those freehand shoulderpads.

Hope to see some future updates.

Hello Brothers! This is just a brief update but expect to see frequent (if slow) posts from me in the coming weeks... While the V legion has unfortunately fallen by the wayside for the moment, I've made a start on another project which attending my local Wargaming Club should encourage me to complete. Teasers to follow soon...

I'm leaving the V Legion for the moment and returning to my first 40k army, the Word Bearers. I've started a XVII Legion force themed around their battles with the Ultramarines starting with this very WIP Dark Apostle.

How dare you abandon the Khan?!

But on a serious note, nice Apostle!  Is that the SoH body?  I used some for my Night Lords, makes for a very nice change from the norm!

Cheers Armond, yes it is the SoH Reaver body; while the cast wasn't the best the detail and overall pose makes it worthwhile. Yes Demon I'll be doing the red colour scheme, possibly the Broken Scythe Chapter. Here's hoping to FW releasing WB Heresy shoulder pads. :P

Just a few more pics showing off the posing and a small part of the detailing. Calgar's base seemed perfect for this. ;)

I'm not sure if the Chaos up dived icon is a bit much compared to the rest of the model, what do you think of this option?

Unlucky, Soviet. I may return to them after I have a decent force of heretics. :P

Oh and the FW pads are pre-heresy. As I understand it the Word Bearers switched from the book with an illuminating flame and the grey colour scheme to the book with the flaming daemon's skull and the crimson colour scheme sometime in between the conclusion of Istavan V and the Scouring of Calth.

I'd appreciate others thoughts on this; especially if they're backed up with solid references.

Thanks Batu, my skills are improving and a set of clay-shapers have helped, but I still have a long way to go to match some of the other Brothers here. I've realised that this is likely to be a slow-burning project so I've started another Power-Armoured force (I know, I have a problem) that I'll be sharing on here once I make some progress.

That said, I've decided that I wasn't happy with the Apostle's pose so I've changed out the torsos, done a little more work on the arms and have started sculpting some details for him.

If I can get the flame detail looking good then I'll use the head seen below, if not, then I'll wait until the FW ones eventually arrive.

I've also tried emulating the look of the oaths/seals/scripture on the FW WB torsos.

As always, I'd appreciate your comments and constructive critisicm.

Gorgeous! Although the eye of Horus on his leg doesn't really fit if you ask me, but I think that you could make it work if you added arrows to the ends of each prong, sort of like a chaos star.

'Great Minds' and all that, Pyromancer; I've already scraped that detail off and have taken care to leave the banding at the bottom of the greave intact. I'm not sure if I'm going to replace it with anything yet..

Wow. I've spent a lot of time lurking in The Forge while I've been busy or away this last month and I've got to say, there's a lot of great work going on at the minute, especially in the ranks of the Traitor Legions. *

Looking through your threads and seeing your progression has re-lit my own fires and I've started to make some progress with my Chapter of the Broken Scythe WB's. I'll have some updates to share with you all by this weekend. **

* I'm looking at you Flint13, BCK, Poom and forte...

** Minus paint as I'm currently looking into airbrushing for the purposes of base coating.

UPDATE!

So this update is a little later than planned; a 40k Black Templars force, other geekery and a week spent rock climbing took precedence. As usual I've done a lot of lurking on the WIP forum and rather than be an armchair hobbyist I've resolved to do more commenting once I've made some more progress with my projects.

That said, the first five men of a planned 15 man despoiler squad ready and waiting individual detailing and back-packs magnetising.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/halifaxmark/imagejpg1-1.jpg

And my DA is finally complete, bar the magnetising required for variable load outs. After working on him with it, I've decided that a 50/50 mix of Green Stuff and Magic Sculpt might be the way forward when it comes to sculpting. Thanks again for the earlier C&C about clay-shapers and such; they're amazing to work with!

I think that his right-hand shoulder-pad might need a little something else; to me it looks a bit bare compared to the rest of the mini'.

As always I'd love your comments and criticism (preferably constructive) and any other feedback. :)

Cheers.

Thank you, gentlemen. That was the fourth crack I'd had at it and I'm glad I persevered. I'm going to hold off on painting until I've had a chance to get my eye in on a few more test mini's.

In the meantime I've got another five despoilers to put together as well as another character to do.

I've got a request for help from any of the America-based Frater; I need to order some bits for an upcoming addition to this project but none of the British or European stores have what I'm after. I know that the US version of The Warforge does but the version that I'm seeing over here doesn't; if any of you are able to help me out here then please PM me.

Cheers,

Halifax.

Hey man, I really like your approach to WB. If your your painting skills are on the same level as sculpting it will look really epic! Two suggestions/comments on your DA – the plasma pistol looks a bit too big. Did you try “heresy era” pistol? It is a bit more elegant. The other thing – the chaos star. It is a bit to “mechanical” and it technically has only seven points (-: maybe you should try to make a custom one with small skull in the middle (from fantasy skeletons set). It is all minor things though  – the model looks great!

Blows dust off of thread.

It's been a while since I posted, but the short of it is that I've been caught up in yet more coursework and work-related courses these past few months. I've not been idle though, as over the past few weeks I've been building a small force of Red Scorpions, eyeing up my first airbrush and planning my eventual return to the age of Darkness and my Word Bearers.

That said, I'll be posting every couple of weeks with the progress of my Red Scorpions and, for this month at least, my entry into "The March of Legions". I thought about entering my as yet un-painted Dark Apostle, but I've decided to do something new instead. Watch this thread...

For those of you whom I've disappointed before, fear naught; you will see painted models...

For now however, please enjoy a brief look at what I've been up to this past week:

One of two apothecaries I'm building...

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/halifaxmark/image.jpg1.jpg

I've carved out the Narthecium holding arm and repositioned it; both arms will eventually be magnetised so that i can arm them as needed.

Just a few details...
