Thank you very much guys.

@ Vash - that's a really good point and one that has been brought up in another forum.

"I agree with you, but for this particular piece I don't think having a back story is appropriate for the auxilary characters - it's part of the tragedy.

Hector from the History Boys illustrates what I tried to achieve better than I can put into words.

Hector:    "The important thing is, he has a name. Say Hardy's writing about the Zulu wars - or later - or the Boer War possibly, and ... These were the first campaigns when soldiers, common soldiers, were commemorated. The names of the dead were recorded and inscribed on war memorials. Before this, soldiers, private soldiers, were all unknown soldiers. And so far from being revered, there was a firm in the nineteenth century (in Yorkshire, of course) which swept up their bones from the battlefields of Europe in order to grind them into fertiliser. So, thrown into a common grave he may be, he's still Hodge, the drummer. Lost boy, though he is, on the far side of the world, he still has a name."

By not having a 'name' I am robbing them of a place in history, leaving them part of the unremembered dead. Istvaan has annihilated their history as it will rob them of their future. This is part of the silence of the witness in my write up.

I'm really glad you replied. You've opened up a debate that I'm interested in and I appreciate your counter argument that the scene is enhanced by the back history of the supporting cast. "

You're right to pick me up on this point as it is a valid criticism but I hope you can understand why I choose to leave the insignia off the models.

I've written up a retrospect in the character on my blog:

A little controversial for staunch imperial but there you
go.

What do you guys think of the gif? It's quite clunky and it
was a bitch to make. May only reserve this for special items like this diorama.

That's a much more complicated explanation than I was expecting and it's not really what I'm talking about. I'm not suggesting a name or background for the dead marines, just missing details be filled in. Details that should be there and are conspicuous by their absence. It would be like if a purity seal was left purple on the armor, or a bolter was entirely gray or a chest eagle was not picked out in a metalic, details that stand out by the lack of color applied to them. Big, blank shoulder pads just stand out as glaring. At the very least all I'm suggesting is Legion and squad symbol markings on the shoulder pads to help break up the big patches of armor color on the shoulder pads.

Also the explanation of leaving these guys nameless doesn't apply to the Luna Wolves, who also are noticeably missing detail on their left shoulder pads. They have excellent legion markings but no squad markings and it stands out noticeably, at least to me.

[Pict-capture Twelve Emperor's Insurrection]

Fogred at Mars the machine spirit of Teras had a reputation as having a bilious disposition. It would continue to exhibit malfunctions of an esoteric nature until its unconfirmed destruction in M37.
However this war machine had several notable kills before and during the Heresy. Agemenom, Captain of the Raven Guard's Shrike Legion, Vakaris the Glutton and the Xenos Lord Brakka Noin all fell to Tetras. Its last days saw it in the service of Iron Warriors annexing the Prmary Star system of Fell [Cross REF. The Bastard of BeltraghXXXIIII - Inquisitorial Seal Magenta].

Whatever you've read about miniature painting I can tell you now that none of it was applied to Khârn. Instead of watering my paints down and blending multiple layers together I mixed the paint up with my own blood (even the whites) and 'stabbed' it on with the end of a bald brush. Varnish? ********, I screamed "Blood and Skulls" at the model for 20 minutes and now the paint is to scared to flake off. The nails sung their blood hymn as I sawed my own head off for the final oil/blood wash.

Again it is all about how you paint the faces that in my opinion makes you one of the elite painters on the B&C. I love how you have robbed Abaddon of all his nobility and honour and you can almost see the more negative characteristics of his personality coming to the fore. Excellent as always brother

I've got to agree with Ratboy... you've got a unique way of painting emotion on faces that gives your models another dimension and really provides character.

Cheers guys. I pay extra special attention on the faces as they convey so much of the character.  Here's my take on Mortarion.

Mortarion The Lord of Decay. Primarch of the Death Guard

“But, you know, I feel more fellowship with the defeated than with saints. Heroism and sanctity don't really appeal to me, I imagine. What interests me is being a man."
