Hello, that's always a good way to start. After a couple of years in the hobby I decided to change something in my "hobby life". I started playing the game, that's one. And I discovered that my army is a mess... My painting skills have improved significantly. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean I'm a good painter, like so many of you on this forum. Still, my skills are better than they used to be, and that's good. Or at least that's what I want to believe.

I'm also a slow painter and hobbyist who easily gets distracted by various real life and warhammer projects. Therefore, my host of painted Crusaders is rather small. As you can imagine (I guess that's a common thing among players and hobbyists) the quality of my painted models is very irregular. There are some marines painted a while ago, when I first got my brush and paints. There are some painted in the meantime, when I discovered highlighting and made my first (feeble) attempts at painting grey lines along the edges. There are some painted when my hand was steadier and I discovered that washes are really, really great for shading tabards. Finally, there are some models I painted recently with all my so far amassed knowledge and skills.

My current major idea-project is to attempt to level the quality of paintjobs. At the same time, I hope that I'll be able to see in the taken photos the (expected) improvement in my painting. As my army is in a state of chaos, I decided not to slow my progress down to a complete halt (or start a regress) and not to remove the old paint. Instead, I want to "upgrade" the old paintjobs. I'm a bit worried about the thickness of the paint, but I'm also very hopeful. I'm sure that from a gaming distance, on the tabletop, they will look significantly better. A bit of thick painter here or there won't hurt that much. It's a good trade-of between having decently and consistently painted minis and having bare or udercoated ones.

Because of all this, I'm starting this new thread which I'm hoping to update as regularly as possible. I'm also planning on keeping it tidy (yay!). So, I'm moving all my WIP stuff over to this thread and my old Crusade thread will be there for background information and as a showcase for finished models.

In order not to scare you off with such a block of text, here are my old Crusaders.

What worries me more is how I'll redo their faces and crosses on shoulder pads, because the paint is already thick there. I also have to pay more attention to where the focus of the camera is.

Welcome to the Eternal Crusade Brother!

I think your crusade is off to a great start and always keep in mind, most of us are always trying to get better. It's the journey, not the destination.

Feel free to drop by the Templars forum and introduce yourself.

It's where all the really zealous kids hang out. :)

Thanks for all the kind words!

The Black Templars subforum is where I come from and where I posted my previous works. There was a time I treated it as the entire world... or at least entire B&C. It's just now that I decided to roam the galaxy fuller smile.png And I'll also share those guys when they will be ready(-er).

To keep this thread at a good pace, I'll share my more recent model. This is brother Zenon. I wanted to paint his pads black and add him to my host of Sword Brethren, but unfortunately for him in the end he will "just" be an Initiate. This is so, because I counted my models and it turned out that I have too many Sword Brethren. A shame. To compensate for this downgrade, I decided to make him a "veteran Initiate" and adorn his armour with more heraldy shields (marking the campaigns he took part in) and inscriptions. As you can see, most of the model is finished, apart from his face, backpack, colour on crusade badges and auspex.

And some close-ups on the detail.

As always, it's amazing how many imperfections become visible in the photos... And I really hate painting white. It always ends up too thick.

I repainted the first two marines. Here are the results:

So, the highlight's are slightly better. There is some added shading. And the bases are painted. These two are actually my first ever finished bases: I imagined that they would be a bit different, more brownish, but these aren't that bad.

Obviously, I still can't find the time to finish repaiting the 3 other guys. But in order to keep this thread somewhat alive, I found some time to photograph all my painted vehicles. Here it goes:

Almost all models were painted a while back. The newer ones are: the "Helbrecht" LRC, the Contemptor and the Land Speeders.

I needed and Inquistor for my army and after some consideration, I figured I wanted a female. Sisters of Battle and GW's female Inquisitors aren't pretty models, and I wanted something a bit more 'foxy'. Like the lady from Retribution. However, I couldn't find a suitable model to build upon. That's why I changed my mind and went for a Power Armour Inquisitor.

I'm pretty happy with the result. I feel that I managed to transfer her successfully from medievalish fantasy to our science-fantasy 40K.

Main major drive was to introduce some recognizable elements of 40K Imperial armoury and the spirit of the Inquisition to the miniature. As I kind of liked the model, I also wanted to keep the changes to a minimum. Also, the miniature is pretty small. Consequently, I had to make sure not to 'overdo' it.

Here's a summary of the 'conversions' slash 'additions' and my ideas which were not realised.

A proper 40K pistol was out of the question. While I'm accustomed to seeing Space Marines wielding insanely big bolt or plasma pistols, such a weapon looked ridiculously on her. That is why I did what you can see: a "custom", GS holster built on top of her dagger (both its ends had to go). The holster is shorter than a regular SM one, but wider. I feel it looks a bit clumsy, but I was afraid to fiddle with it any more than I did. It isn't bad. Sure, it could be better, but considering my GS skills it most likely would end up worse.

Next, there is an inquisitorial "I" on a thick, thick chain. It seems a bit out of proportion, but that is the smallest chain I could get. Sure, I'd prefer the links to be smaller, but I have to live with that. And making GS chain is out of the question, by the way. I'm not skilled enough with the modelling tool...

As this is 40K, and an Inquisitor, I felt that she should be properly marked. You know, there shouldn't be any doubt to what and who she is tongue.png So there are 3 more "I" symbols: two on her shoulder pads (making those took me forever, and they are far from what I imagined them to be) and one on the helmet. Luckily, I had some small GS skulls, so I could add them here and there (holster, shoulder pads).

The miniature's back is pretty cramped. There is the helmet, a pouch, a tabard, and my additions: a grenade, a purity seal and the Liber Heresius. Maybe all that is a bit too much, but I had to place all three accessories somewhere. The grenade has a skull, so I believe it's some sort of fancy psycho-something grenade, the Inquisition uses exclusively. Purity seals are awesome and every important Imperial character should have one, right? That's at least how I see it.

And the troublesome Heresius tome. I couldn't find a suitable place for it, but I felt that an Inquisitor should have one (and I care about WYSWIG). At first, I thought about placing it somewhere in front - hanging from the belt, but it looked clumsy. Too clumsy. And it ruined her pose. So back it had to be. First, I considered placing it on her back, above the pouch, but that was impossible. I lost hope, but then this idea came to my mind and I stuck with it.

The Liber Heresius is strapped to her belt on two chains. It bears and "I" symbol (which should be more noticeable after painting). In order to protect its contents from unwanted eyes, it is bound with a chain. To remove the chain, one has to have a key: there is a GS blob which was supposed to be a lock. The back of the tome was meant to bear an "I" symbol. Ah, my GS skills are(n't) amazing!!

The sword: there was some deliberation on my part there. I wanted to remove the blade, but a normal SM power sword turned out to be too wide. Then I remembered That the simplest solutions are best: I added two skulls (one on each side) on top of the "ornate" cross-guard, which kind of resembles eagle's wings. Right? It does, a bit? I also added two copper wires to imitate "those things" on power weapons.

Enough with boring you with longish descriptions. Here are the images:

Moreover, she'll be accompanied by a servo skull. About the base: I'll probably try and remove the rock on top off which she stands and will place her on a base made out of Sisters' of Battle Rhino door ornament, cut to size.

The model used is Reaper's Miniatures Alaine, Female Paladin.

Let me know what you think about the conversion so far smile.png

Cheers!

A small update on the female Inquisitor. As I'm not confident about my skills in painting faces, I started with that so that I don't have to strip the entire paint job in case I'm not happy with the result.

Now I have to decide how to paint her. I'm thinking silver + deep red. Or silver + black. Or gold + deep red. I can't make up my mind about it! Any suggestions?
