"Send the Eighth" - 28/1/15 Command unit finished!

Fracture

So, little step by step on how I do gory corpses.

1st a base colour of cadian flesh tone and then an earthshade wash. Nothing hard there.

Add kislev flesh to the mix until you're using pure kislev. After that add some Wych Flesh to it for a final high light, the following are a few pics of me going up through the stages.

After this is done add another thin was of earthshade. This takes the healthy look out of the skin without going to pale.

Once that is dry paint any bones with Steel legion Drab and high light up through Screaming Skull and add an bit of Wych Flesh to the Screaming Skull on the edge.

Any organs and fleshy bit are based in Khorne red and highlighted with the final highlight colour from the bones into a pink highlight.

Now the fun bit. I use a 50//50 mix of Tamiya Clear red and Tamiya Smoke. I tend not to water this down as once it starts to go a bit gloopy you can get some cool looking blood stains. Paint this over all the organs and bones leaving some of the bone clean for contrast. Having it come onto the skin can add a bit of grimness as well.

That's that for the corpses. Unfortunately I wont get round to the other step by steps until next week as I'm off on holiday for a long weekend. Hopefully this has been useful for some of you. Feel free to ask any questions.

The skin color looks absolutely stunning, mate. However I think you might want to consider darkening the blood color just a tad. Given that this is congealed blood coming from areas where copious amounts of blood would pouring, I think it only right that the blood should be darker and thicker.

Just my two cents.

Thanks for the comments guys. Hopefully you'll like him more now his finished.

Noctus Cornix - I totally agree that the blood around the organs should be darker, but due to the dark blue and I sparingly use the lightning I use the bright red to add a splash of colour.

I've managed to pick up the photo backgrounds today so I've been holding of posting up any pics until now. I'm sold on backgrounds now, I feel they add a lot to the pics and make the model stand out more.

I did plan to have another short story to put up with him but didn't get a chance to finish it. Should post it up soon though.

You don't see many women's corpses modeled onto bases and as trophies. It's darker because most people refrain from using dead women as props for their models. Like I said before, though, it could've just been a man who neglected chest day at the gym.

This observation and react always disturbed me.  Why can't women and children be just as likely as victim of war as men?  Is seeing flayed men just so more acceptable?  War is never pleasant, and I am so glad of this realistic touch.  I give the creator much more prop for that touch, and the paint job is some of the best night lords I have ever seen.

Let's not get into this discussion  about corpses again, ladies and gents, shall we?

Overall it looks great Fracture and I can understand your reasoning for the read. I will still say it looks a little off to me, but hey its your model my friend.

Yeah, I'll second Noctus Cornix on that one. My last contemptor got the same discussion going for two pages and all has been said.

Fracture - I love it. I do feel there could be a teeny tiny bit more lightning, but other than that - bliss. The background looks awesome. Are those the prints Forte recommended? (I can't find the lniks he posted anywhere!)

Good thing we are in agreement that it's a cool touch, then.

This is, of course, just me saying it's a great conversion. It was not an attempt to 'start any discussions'.

Thanks for all the comments guys.

Augustus - now that you mention it I think I could add a bit more lightning as well, maybe over a shoulder of the missile system what do you think?

Those are indeed the backgrounds Forte uses. Managed to get a friend to print them on nice glossy paper for me. The link is here

Kizzdougs - glad you like the hour glass, I'm really happy with how it came out. I bailed at trying to paint the sand though.

Noctus - cheers mate.

Uprising - thanks, glad you like the thread. I think there are some much better NL threads on here though.

Flint - I'm sure yours will look great, gave you started work on it yet?

Marshal2 - thanks for the comments. I did choose the female body for the contemptor to add a bit if creepiness etc, but I won't go into it as its all been discussed of Augustus's awesome thread already.

Thanks for the link, Fracture!

I think the body itself and the left leg could use some lighting. The arms have plenty! (I took the liberty of showing what I mean using my fantastic powerz of Windows Snipping Tool and Paint)

  • 1 month later...

Good news everyone, I'm not actually dead. (This is the bit where you're meant to look happy)

Things have been rather slow for the last few months with Destiny and getting a Necromunda table set up and painted really not helping. I managed to break out the green stuff and glue tonight though and started work on a unit of bike and a 2nd rhino.

Also been working on another short story, I'm about half way through so fingers crossed should have it finished soon.
