Nova-surge-101
Okay so there is an army list, however it is kind of based off of hope. The hope is that if my praetor buys a drop pod, can his terminator escort and apothecary go with him? The list stands as at 1720 points Hq Praetor with iron halo, digital lasers, paragon blade. With terminator command squad, 3 power weapons, reaper and banner bearer and drop pod Vigilator with artificer, power sword, refractor field Seige breaker with artificer, refractor field Troops 2 x 10 man tactical 5 man reconnaissance squad with power armour, sniper rifles and camleoline Elites Apothecary Contemptor with Kherses Fast attack 1x tarantula with scout and twin las cannons Heavy support Legion devastators with 5 flak launchers Legion medusa with phosphex Tactics Apothecary, praetor and command squad deep strike upfield turn one, Vigilator and scout marines, tact mid/back sniping units Siege breaker joins devs popping tanks, flyers and infantry Medusa sits back field contesting and keeping everything out of its way Contemptor goes mad killing whatever it can--- distraction carnifex!!! And the tarantula is just a real pain in the a**e Comments and criticisms welcome Many thanks in advance Snook Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286395-legion-ultra-marines/ Share on other sites
Moonstalker
Unfortunately, I think I'm going to be the one to dash your hopes. The only way to take drop pods is to use the Orbital Assault Rite of War, which would require that your entire force take to drop pods (or Storm Eagles, or Deep Striking). The Praetor himself cannot purchase a drop pod transport, but the Command Squad could, and it would be legal to attach both the Apothecary and Praetor to the command squad and stuff them in the drop pod. But getting that drop pod will require that you rework everything else in your army. Nova-surge-101
Well thank you for replying, could I not purchase the drop pod for a tactical squad, deploy them normally then put the praetor, apothecary and cataphactii command in it? If not what would you suggest as an alternative? Any help at this point would be appreciated thanks Snook Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286395-legion-ultra-marines/#findComment-3585258 Share on other sites
Moonstalker
Drop pods can only be taken when using the Orbital Assault Rite of War. Either your entire army is in drop pods or none of it is. On the whole, I think you're waaaay too HQ heavy at this point level. You have Something like 400 points tied up in 3 HQs and... probably about that many points in troops, maybe a little bit more. But you're talking about 25 power armored bodies using minimum size troop squads. The tacticals don't even have Rhinos or a ADL to hide behind, they're not mobile enough to get up the field and grab objectives or durable enough to weather the kind of firepower that will come their way. I don't think that tarantula will be anywhere near as annoying as you want it to be. A single lascannon that can't even shoot to its maximum range with only a 75% chance to hit and no control over what it shoots at? Waste of points, and it's so fragile it'll be dead on turn one anyways. It is not hard to knock over a T6 W2 Sv3+ model. I think your anti-tank is really lacking. The twin-Kheres CM can do some good work against AV13-14 if it's in range, but we're talking about an environment where Land Raiders and Spartans are not abnormal, and where Flare Shields and Armored Ceramite are a thing. What is your plan for handling a Spartan with a Flare Shield? Your missile launchers cannot hurt it from the front, your Tarantula can only glance it, and even with Rending the Contemptor will only be able to get glances through the Flare Shield. I'm not saying your army needs to be built to knock AV14 vehicles off the table on turn one, but you currently just don't have any real method for dealing with heavy armor. Even if you keep everything you have now, at least spread some meltabombs around with the 30 points you have free (till 1750 at least) so you have some method of semi-reliably killing AV14. I think your army is also a little schizophrenic. Which I think is probably a result of seeing all the cool things you can have, and trying to take a little of each. Some terminators here, some Recon marines and a vigilator there, siege breaker and phosphex medusa there, etc. And if Rule of Cool and what models you like are the sole drivers of your unit choices, then carry on. But I think this army would benefit, playability-wise, from a clear vision. I do not think the battle plan you have in mind counts. While a tactical squad is primarily a ranged unit, their ideal range is 12 inches - sitting back in your deployment zone won't do it, and I don't think you have the bodies to push up to mid field and still maintain combat effectiveness. Even assuming you could take that drop pod (you can't), your single deep striking squad would just go down in a hail of bolter fire as you deep strike right into range of the enemy's tactical squads, and they get to use Fury of the Legion on you. They could even have an Apothecary with an Augury scanner and get interceptor fire as you step out of the pod. You've got 350 points tied up in a melee unit that is going to be vulnerable, exposed, and in range of the entire enemy force on turn 1 because they can't get safely into melee after they come out of reserves. The two things I see mostly going to plan are your missile squad and your Contemptor-Mortis. I don't think the Recon Marines or Vigilator actually do anything besides moderately annoy some tactical marines. You get 6 shots, 4-5 hits, 2-3 wounds, and maybe one of those is a rend if you're lucky. Is that really worth the 300-ish points you're paying there? So what are you trying to do? Is this a siege army? Focus some more on infantry and artillery, add nuncio-voxii to your tacticals. An assault army? Get some faster moving troops or some transports, bring a terminator squad instead of a command squad, stuff it in a spartan, make it big. Are you doing a recon division? Bring tacticals in rhinos, bikes, etc. Maybe still bring the recon marines, but bring them in force and make use of their special rules - Scout, Outflank, Infiltrate (if you give them Recon armor instead of power armor, at least). thor1234
I'd agree with Kitwulfen, too many eggs not enhough baskets.... 30K encouragesw you to play with larger squads by making you pay a premium for the intial squad but then less to add men, also unlike 40K marines, when selecting drop pods i 30K forge world have made it so that ypu cannot deplopy pods empty, the unit must start in them, as well as using the rite of war to unlock them.... so all pods or not at all..... so that would mean no decent devs, no Medusa etc.... to that effect if you want to go Drop Pods, I'd take at least 4 basic squads in pods and flesh the army out with Dreads in pods... if you're going for the Siege List, see my Battle reports in the Ultramarines subforum as its quite simialr to what I take........ TheForgottenAngel
I'll be frank and don't take it the wrong way, GET OUT OF THE 40K MINDSET. The posters about me have given you great advice. If I were to play this list I'd destroy your troops turn one with five permitting. 30k punishes you big time for small units due to the amount of blasts that will remove lots of troops. With that in mind, HQs are often insta-killed by many of the big guns so keep them focused and cheap. Since you are starting out I'd highly recommend NOT using a Rite of War on the getgo. Instead have one in mind and slowly build up to it. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286395-legion-ultra-marines/#findComment-3586413 Share on other sites
