Also: DOES NO-ONE NOTICE my ultra nerdy Star Trek references in the fluff of the latest Devastator squad?

Now that you mention it, I found Risa as well, but Bellos Galiko is not a Star trek reference, is it? If you ever do Smurfs, Call a Stormraven pilot something like Titus Pullo, and I bet you can find a place for a Lucius Vorenus somewhere. ;)

@Race Bannon: Aren't the Star Trek Nerds usually called Trekkies?

Trekkies are on a higher level. The more you know, the more you grow ^_^

But I digress.

Hannes Kirchberg = jack Churchill, an officer in ww2 who fought with a longbow and a broadsword...

Kirchhügel would be exact, but I have only heard Kirchberg as an actual name.

Yeah, it would be more precise, but it doesn't sound as cool ;)

@ Knight of the Raven: That's right! Keep lighting the fire! I'll do that if you have any Gravguns to spare. Ruight now, I'm totally short, so if you have any, I'll be a welcome recipient. I''ll write some appropriate fluff, no worries....

I really need to make 'stop joking' my top new year resolution. Sorry 'stop blood eagling every one who disagrees with you,' you're not first anymore.

I don't have any spare gravguns.

Also: DOES NO-ONE NOTICE my ultra nerdy Star Trek references in the fluff of the latest Devastator squad?

I don't care for Star Trek, though I do like Banned from Argo. I've been wondering if that song could be rewritten to fit Warhammer 40,000...

Wow, guys and gals, thanks for the multitude of replies!

I got a bit side tracked, as I realized I hadn't made a Call of Chaos vow yet. So I made one, and Lo and Behold I ended up vowing six units. I guess I'll have to step up my game if I am to become a Warmaster and not a Spawn....

This weekend of course also saw the release of Burning of Prospero, and of course I got a box. I traded the Custodes (minus the banner) for a squad of MkIII marines, because I'll probably never going to play Custodes and with my HH Iron Warriors probably need TONS of MkIII. There's a tinge of regret in the back of my mind, as I love the Custodes models, but financially this was the right decision. Yeah, I'll just keep telling myself that.

Anyway, on to the first of two Night Lords Havoc Squads with lascannons. I used the BoP plastic MkIII marines - what a joy to have them! Curiously these seem to ahve an even bigger empty space hidden in their lower legs than teh MkIV marines. When I drill into the soles of their feet for the paper clip holding pins, there's a jolt of free room after only 2mm drilling. There's also FW NL shoulder pads and the excellent Night Lords trophy bits that a 3d party Russian designer released a couple months back. I opted for Chaos Warrior helmets for them, because I like the feral look itgives them. I'm not quite sure I'll keep this, though...

Oh, and I also finally made the Champion and Flamer cultists for my Servitor Cultist squad:

Replies!

@ dantay_xv: YES! First price for you. But it's not only Riza - it's also the fact that the Riza Government was called the Riza Hedonate - which I made into a Slaanesh-dedicated pleasure cult. ;) :D

@ Biohazard: It is! Most definitely.

@ Trysanna: Yes! Thanks for naming someone. Awesome name too. And I'll take the bit of fluff along with him :)

@ SalvationOfReason: You're so cute. Yes, DS9 featured Riza, but it was TOS that first had Riza. So you got the crumbs, but the cookie goes to dantay_xv.... :p ;)

@ Race Bannon: Why be ashamed? Don't (self-)hate, celebrate!

@ Quixus: No, Bellos Galiko is a name Acquilanus suggested, which I 40Kified. It's Latin for Gallic Wars, and a shameless and slightly corny reference to Caesar's Comentarii de Bello Gallico, his self-promoting tales of his exploits in what is now France and Belgium. Also, that's a propper schooling of Race Bannon.

@ Vairocanum: Cheers! Yeah, I had to, I only saw the two Inquisitorial thingies when I was already painting it, so made something up to factor them into the overarching fluff of the squad. :tu:

@ Lord Thørn: How should I have known Hannes Krichberg = Jack Churchill? His wikipedia page doesn't mention the name Hannes Kirchberg, and I also don;t quite understand the reference in regards to the guy you picked (although I'm known to be a bit dense) - unless it's the fact that Chruchill brought a broadsword to a gunfight and the mini you chose has the biggest sword... Enlighten me! I demand it.

@ Race Bannon: Yeah yeah. Face it, you got schooled! And you outed yourself as a trekkie! High fives ALL AROUND!!

@ Quixus & Lord Thørn: Kirchhügel also doesn't show up on his wiki page. What are you guys blathering about??

@ Knight of the Raven: ??? You've thoroughly lost me, buddy.    OOOooooh so you don't like gravguns, but you do use them!?!?!? Why else would you not have them to spare? Huh? Got you there, buddy! :p

As far as I can tell, Hannes is a German equivalent of Jack, and Kirchberg means church+hill/mountain

What Teentengee said ^^ According to behind the name, Hannes and Jack are both variations on Johannes(John), and I used a quick bit of Google Translator for Kirchberg ^^

And yes, bringing a sword to a gunfight (and being totally badass about it) earns him the right to get an Eviscerator in 40k in my book :P

Nothing complicated really ^_^

Aug, thought the whole disrupting Rizas weather system was a reference to the episode of DS9 where that in fact happened :P

Cute? Pfft.

The BoP mk3s are gorgeous. I've found it's really easy to diversify leg poses on them, simply because the legs are already separate pieces.

Edit - the Havocs are looking swell. My inner IVth Legion approves!

Edited by SalvationOfReason

I never liked chaos warrior helmets on space marines. They just don't look like space helmets to me.

@ Knight of the Raven: ??? You've thoroughly lost me, buddy.    OOOooooh so you don't like gravguns, but you do use them!?!?!? Why else would you not have them to spare? Huh? Got you there, buddy! :tongue.:

It's gravcannons I dislike, not gravguns. I love the latter's look. They're on my magnetized Raven Guard outriders. Of course, I wouldn't even give their rules a second glance if plasmaguns didn't get hot.

Seriously, the only thing my plasma users ever hit is themselves.

Thanks guys!

I finished painting the NIght Lords Havocs. They were initally a drag, but t°later a blast to paint. I realized half-way through them that it has been over a year that I painted any Night Lord, and over two years since I did any infantry models in their colours. Huh. These are also the first I didn't paint with Vallejo Liquid Old Gold but with GW Retributor armour and I have to say the GW paint is a fine, fine substitute. I'm not going back to Old Gold - if only because painting with alcohol-based paints is such a hassle.

About the pictures, it's weird - either the light is off because it's a bit nippy outside and the sun is lower because of the time of year, or Night Lords are just harder to photograph right because of the colour combo. Anyway, picture time!

Cheers. :tu:

@ Teetengee: Hahaha you made me go lol

@ SalvationOfReason: You're right! That was that episode and I guess the fluff I concocted synced more with that particular episode than with any other! But I swear I just had  Riza in mind when writing the fluff. ;) I'm sorry to disappoint you with the VIII colours on the mini's that you surely hoped would be IVth.... :p

@ Knight of the Raven: Oh well, you can't win 'm all! I realy like the brutal, feral look the Chaos Helmets give marines. :tu: I'm not sure I would use plasma even without get's hot. I really like the salvo rule as it still alows fffor charger after firing them... Thoughts?

@ Trysanna: Thanks! The sisters might end up as a liason to my fists, but don't count on it. I mean, the Imperial Fists are the most likely chapter/legion EVER to have a Custodian guard as they're based on Terra, but I just don't like allies.

After so much Imperialism, this is just heresy.

See what I did there? Woo I need more coffee...

Seriously, great looking Night Lords! I'm a particular fan of underslung weapons ^_^

Edited by Race Bannon

Yay Chaos dudes again. I'm mean you fists are great and all and I love that your naming them but they choses the wrong side.

the warrior helmets looks ace there, I hope a mk3 or two made it into the second squad as they are very cool and it's nice to have a mix.

Some mighty fine paint jobs, and done with speed as well!

Though, I am not sure if you noticed but the second weapon specialist has a odd arm joint, Not sure what you can do about that now I just wanted to mention it.

ALso If its been two years since you last painted a night lord. I should point out that 2 years ago I didnt have any Iron Warriors Painted! Its crazy..

Thanks for the comments and feedback, guys!

Here's WiP pictures of the second half of the Havoc squad, including the champion.

Champion. As I'm going for a thoroughly corrupted Night Lords force, I thought it'd be cool to have this guy have a corrupted backbpack from the possessed kit. I also gave him a small helmet plume, to signify his veteran status among his brothers.

@ Race Bannon: A bit of Heresy once in a while never hurt anyone. ;)

@ Barrabas Sogalon: Hey buddy! Long time no see around these parts! :) THanks for the comment, and yeah, the brutal Chaos Helmets do combine well with MkIII, eh?

@ Mechanist: No MkIII helmets in the second squad, unfrotunately - I'm a stickler for consistency... :tu:

@ Uveron: Hmmm I looked and can't see anything wrong - it's just the way they mesh together. Might be an odd camera angle? About the painting: I know right? With dedication you can make it work.

@ Teetengee: You're totally right. In fact, the way I wrote about the Salvo rule was a regurgitation of the interpretation of a buddy, who was building a nasty list. Now that you've made me realize salvo actually prevents charging, this gives me ammo to nag him ;) :D

@ Trysanna: The skinning pits are where I lay my head. Of wait, that came out wrong. ;) I'm thankful for the offer, but am afraid they're promised to someone else...

@ Viridia: Underslung is so awesome! It's not just the MkIII - but I appreciate the sentiment!

Those Havocs are quite excellent and very convincing proof that the Mk. III Marines can function as fantastic CSM with very little work and just a few additional bitz! Excellent stuff, mate!

The painted squad is also rather lovely -- good to see that all the work on loyalist Marines hasn't dulled your edge ;) The first weapon specialist is my favourite!
