First of all, thanks for being so understanding about my opinion. It didn't feel particularly good to be the first one to seemingly shoot down your ideas, and it should be understood that it's all in the interest of helping you build the best Khornate army you can! :smile.:

That said, The new pictures really solve any problem I had with the colour scheme: Turns out the gakky pictures were the problem all along -- what a relief! Seriously, though: The model has all the contrast it needs in the new pictures, and the red seems just fine -- see, you really had me worried there for a second.

Please, please don't use any of GW's newer WE decals, though: Every single World Eaters decal they've produced since the early 90s has been horrible, especially with the inclusion of green and blue. Terrible stuff...

I also feel I need to clarifly something: I should have said: I wish you'd make these classic World Eaters, that is not one of the new Daemonkin warbands. Mostly because your original WE squad was so cool (easily one of the best zerker squads I have seen so far). If you are committed to making these members of the Wrath, though, that's of course your choice. You do seem to have found a working recipe, I'll admit that much  Come to think of it, there was a rather lovely photo spread of a Wrath army in one of the Warhammer:Visions issues -- did you see it?

Or what about going all red for the armour, with only the helmets painted in bone colours?

Anyway, keep up the fantastic work, buddy! :smile.:

What do I think? GW really should release new plastic Berzerkerz .... :tongue.::wallbash:

Quoting for truth and one of two reasons I don't do chaos at the moment.

I'm loving the new pictures. The colour looks a lot more vibrant compared to the previous ones

Of your test cards, 3rd from the left top row and 2nd, 3rd & 4th from left bottom row are my favourites, the others seem a bit purply, but that could be the light.

And liking the Berzerker, once you get a little arterial spray on him, he will look boss

For reds, I swear by either mechrite red or Khorne red with a drakenhof wash, then build the reds back up with dilute khorne red, up to a very edge of blood red. Wild rider red is too orange

Your red looks great

Edited by dantay_xv

The Berzerker looks much better in new pictures. I like the combination of colors, I really do. However you should keep in mind that if the entire army follows this, when you look at it from distance, it will be somewhere between dark red, dull gold, and bone. Generally speaking a KDK/World Eaters army is predominantly red, and a lively red at that. I'm pointing this out because so far your Night Lords were visibly blue and your Imperial Fists iconically yellow. If what you are aiming for is very toned down red and a generally darker scheme, then it's all fine. Just food for thought.

In any case  great work as always and looking forward to seeing more. :)

I am not yet appeased!!!!

The red and bone are fine, it's the black that I think has a problem. It isn't dark enough and looks to me like a kind of meh grey. I would push the contrast, but by darkening the shadows, rather than the other way around.

Also, if his extremities are to be red, shouldn't the hands be red as well?

Thanks a lot for the comments, gal and guys! Glad the opinions have shifted towards favourable. Now that I have a working recipe, I can begin my warband. I have tons of reaver bodies left over from a project, plus I got my hands on a couple sets of the new Assault Marine legs. I'm planning on doing two squads each of Berzerkers and MoK Marines, plus their rides. I've also got an order out for twenty flesh hounds. I did decide to go for flesh hounds over the cool barghest fiends from puppetswar. Mainly because I want this to be a tournament-playable army and the local scene is quite forgiving about third party products.

That being said, I'm actually in full prepping mode for the upcoming ETL. Got myself SCabeiathrax, that huuuuge bloated Great Unclean One from FW, plus some other goodies. Of course, seeing as I'm doing Khorne Daemonkin now, most of the models will be Khorne themed. As such, I building three awesome Khornate walkers...

Here's two:

The third is still in pieces, but I've finished working on its base. With feet for a hint... :D

@ Atia: yeah, the current berzerkers are such wickedly old designs. I remember them coming out when I was a teenager and thinking "hm, the new plastic tactical marines have better detail and proportions..." I still bought the kit a couple years ago, but honestly: those hands just look ridiculous!

@ KrautScientist: Again, your critique is always constructive and well-founded, and you honestly do make me a better hobbyist, so no harm done. At all. IN fact, the contrary. :) I'll keep your adivce about the transfers in mind. Sadly the FW sheet is sold out. :( I can't say I saw that particular Visions. When visions first came out I remember it was just pages and pages of the new tyranid releases, and thinking "I can see those pics online for free". So I stuck to WD. But WD has recently transformed into an unashamed advertisement folder, and Visions seems to have cleared up. So I recently switched. Which # are we talking about?

@ Angrypantz: Oh good. Yeah berzerkers boo! ;)

@ SickSix & Lord Thorn: Cheers. Funny thing is, it's the same mini, same paint job. Totally different pics, though.

@ dantay_xv: Arterial spray? What an idea!

@ ShVagYer: Good point. I might go for red arms too, which will make the general tone red.

@ Teetengee: AH, I like your point and you've given me an idea. I'll try and do two more test cards with black and blue candy paints tomorrow, see how that turns out. On the other hand, what you're suggesting: darkening the shadows: how is that done for black? Start with a basecoat of grey and then shading that with black?

-snip-

Uh, maybe? I honestly don't know that well. Part of it would be to make sure your highlights are still very dark or at least very small. But to be honest, it is an issue I am not sure how to solve well, black can be tricky if you are highlighting it.

Ohhh, more Daemon Engines -- now that is always something to look forward to! :)

Regarding the decals, I honestly don't know if those FW decals would even help you all that much, to be honest: My own experiences with the decal sheet have been fairly uneven so far, especially when using the decals on infantry sized models. The main problem is the question of colour coverage: For instance, the golden/brazen decals  work great when used on black and red, but the red decals won't work on red (for obvious reasons) and look like pink when used on a dark grey/black background.

The issue of Visions I was referring to is #15, easily indentifiable by lots and lots of Khornate models on the cover ;) The Wrath army featured in it is pretty nice -- not necessarily what I would paint my own models like, but the colour scheme does have a few neat ideas: Using tally marks instead of conventional heraldry, for one, and the way the Bloodletters actually look like Predators, with the tally marks seeming almost like tiger stripes. On a related note, I rather like Visions because to get to see quite a lot of lovely army concepts. There's too much repetition, certainly, and too much of a focus on the flavour of the week faction, but the overall format just works for me, by and large.

Hey guys, thanks for the comments. As said in my previous post, I'm prepping for the ETL. I'm set on topping my 2013 points count, which means I will need top paint more than 3535 points. This means lots and lots of high points models - which is great because I have a definite urge to A. go back to painting chaos after painting loyalists for a year, and B. go bakc to painting vehicles and walkers after painting mostly infantry for a year.

As such, I'm focussing on a couple fo walkers right now. Specifically, the Kytan Daemon engine, the two Blood Slaughters seen above, and a Soul Grinder.

These models all need huge bases, and this is the main subject of this post. You might have noticed my Imperial Fists had vastly different bases than my Night Lords. Where my Night Lords had grey, drybrushed cork and flock bases, my Imperial Fists have brown bases using a muddy paste. I really enjoyed doing things very differenlty and like how the bases make the army 'feel' different, too. So for my Khorne Daemonkin I'll change things around again, and try to add some more scenic bases - with barbed wire, broken fences, slate, material etc., all on a simple sand base.

I started on the biggest base in the army - the Kytan engine's, which you can see above. I loved it, and have since expanded on the concept using old rhino doors, more plasticard T-beams, slate and lots of skulls. I also did the bases for the Blood Slaughterers and the Soul Grinder. Waddayafink?

The metal poles in the middle of the bases in the last two pics are actually to mount the walkers on. The legs of the Blood Slaughterer and the Soul grinder are notoriously fragile, so I thought it´d be a good idea to mount them on metal rods, which I hope will be masked by the base itself.

Also, I did some more work on the Kytan Daemon engine. I use UHU Endfest 2-Expoxy glue for larger resin kits, and especially on large walkers like the Kytan or my Warhound. It's a very strong glue which will definitely hold the piece up - but it has a setting time of 24 hours, so it's very slow work. I love where it is going. the armour plates on the shins and thighs are bluetaced on, the rest is glued in place.

Hope you like!

@ dantay_xv: Sushi Masters. You sir, are funny.

@ Atia: Do iiiit! They're truly lovelry models to build. I'm half-way through one and it's been a blast. The fron paws alone have five six joints!

@ Teetengee: Well, thanks for the idea anyway :smile.:

@ Hushrong: Ha! You prolly missed it ealrier, but I'm still glad you like it. I must say I'm quite pleased with how the army turned out myself :smile.:

@ KrautScientist: Hey buddy, thanks for sending the #15 pics to me. After seeing the pics, I contacted my local store and they found one for me, so I'll have that for reference when I start painting. About the decals... yeah. That is a bit of a pity. Particularly because I really enjoyed using them on my Imperial Fists. I guess I'll have to lear how to freehand. :smile.: About Warhammer: Visions. I tried to look up pictures of #15 online and found this article about Visions in general, which uses that issue a a backdrop for it's verdict. And I tend to agree. Where's the hobby tips? Where's the interviews of hobbyists? Where's the kit bash articles. It's just pages and pages of pictures, without any context or inspiration beside the visuals. Visions had a great concept: to truly be the hobbyist's magazine. But so far, it hasn't lived up to it's potential. This is true even a year after #15, on which the article was based.

@ kizzdougs: Glad you like him so far! Other than more skulls on chains and the usual extra fleshy bits, no conversions.

@ Atia: The skulls are from Dark World Creations. They're more detailed, better proportioned, and cheaper than those of Secret Weapon, IMO. The Kytan is wickedly posable. There's of course the fairly limited shoulder of the LoS, but the legs are very posable. The feet are not pose-able, but this is made up for by their pose themselves. The ankle is a combination of ball joint plus swivel joint, the leg itself has two swivel joints, and the leg-to-hip joint is a ball joint again. I've never constructed a Cerastus KNight myself, so I can't say anything about that.

Looks like you will have as much work to perform to PREPARE for the ETL as for PAINTING during the event. :smile.:  That's an inspiring points target that I cannot match for the cash, let alone the painting scope... Best wishes for the event, even though I will be supporting my earlier allegiance (Black Templars).

Anyway, as for the bases above, they look good.  Can you find any more battlefield debris, discarded larguns etc?  I like crowded bases as long as they don't distract from the model.

Hey guys, an update about my progress, and my getting distracted. Again.

So here's what I have build up to now. From left to right, top to bottom:

Dread Claw Assault Pod, Kytan Daemon Engine, Soul Grinder, Scabeiathrax, 2x Blood Slaughterer, Bloodthirster and a Hel Bladefighter.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Night%20Lords%20WIP/temporary_zps5313xz59.jpg

Pretty good, but I'm getting depressed staring at bare resin and plastic and having to restrain myself to not just paint them because of the ETL. So as a distraction I started painting something Imperial Fisty: a Storm Talon. yay!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Imperial%20Fists/temporary_zpszgkidbw5.jpg

Did some work on it immediately, mainly the shading, some metal and black parts...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Imperial%20Fists/temporary_zpsv1h1dmsv.jpg

...and the clear plastic canopy. Pretty standard stuff, although I like how the Minitaire ghost Tint Blue has worked on the canopy. It's a brilliant way of tinting your clear plastic parts, as it sticks so much better than tamiya clear paints.http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Imperial%20Fists/temporary_zpsi69cxy9k.jpg

Thanks for looking.

Replies:

@ Kurama: Nah, I think I'm going to do the mini's above first. I'll play it safe and just do a relatively large vow first, then the others as time permits. I don't have to have the 3000 points vow banner.

@ The Observer: Indeed!

@ Psykic_scribe: Yeah probably. I too like a crowded base, with the same restrictions as you.

@ hushrong: Careful to not brake the chair, buddy!

@ Midnight Runner: Hah! Awesome. Please comment away, as they really help me stay focussed. Thanks!
