WiP: The Fallen "A hunt for robes"

Hi folks,

now that I am back in the hobby, I started a chaos space marines chapter right away. first I wanted to create an army of the fallen, but the the color scheme was in my opinion a little dull. so now i created a few prototypes. as you can see, it consists of a lot robed, very medieval inspired marines. I would like to give them an angelic feel, fallen angels nonetheless, but NOT from the dark angels, more like Christian Or jewish style as Seen in the middleages. Maybe i add some Wings to them :) what is missing is a great color scheme. i can't come up with one. mayve because i played nightlords and i always see dark blue with lightning bolts smile.png

so, if anyone can come up with a dark gritty scheme fitting to the prototypes, then I will be very happy.

i think you should give the fallen a second chance, they do after all have a very dark and gritty color scheme to them, mainly black, with lots of red and pale browns and silver, it might be a bit dull, but i think that is a strength for it, that is what makes for "gritty" after all, and with the mix of being dark also very brooding, especially with all the hoods and cloaks

an alternate take on those colors that have always worked for me for many many things is to use black as main color, red for trims, and then silver and the odd pale brown (bone?) for contrast on little doodads and trinkets, but emphasizing the silver via blades and spikes

on a side note... boy, does your awesome models make me want a fallen army of my own! D:

:EDIT:

another take on the fallen scheme could be black armor, dark steel trims, red weapon casings, and then use pale grey-brown robes painted mainly via drybrushing for a ragged, old, dirty look, making the robes (of which you have plenty) appear almost sorta ethereal... its definately worth keeping robe color very much in mind almost as the main color of your army, seeing how plentiful they are on your models.

Well I love a dark red. Was alias a Fan of the guardians of covenant, but I'm afraid, that my chaotics will only Look like well "fallen" guardians of the covenant.

@-cormac-airt: would you paint the armour in Brown Or the robes ?

@carnosaur93: Yeah, the fallen are really great, maybe i test the Second color scheme on on of my marines. But, i wanted to give them this angelic touch too. And despite their name, the dark angels aren't very angelic, are they?

There Must be a scheme, which could capture me, but in matters of Colors, i am NOT very creative. Always Made Pencil Sketches in the past ;)

So heeeeelp welcomed.

Oh, I have an Idea for the Chaos Lord. Some Kind of twisted, evtl sanguinius style. One Black feathered wing, the oder an mechanized. He is called the One wingd Angel. Silly? If so, Tell me before i Kitbash something;)

Going too overt with any theme or inspiration can seem silly no matter what. If that is supposed to be Sephiroth, then yes that is pretty silly.

As for your direct question to me, going with dark brown robes could lend a nice monk look. Ascetic Chaos Marines.

Prototypes look fantastic.

Have you thought about taking all the original DA colors and dropping them a few shades? Ageing them I mean. I can see a group of fallen fighting and maintaining the equipment, but it simply fading over time.

Oh, so many warbands, but none of them robed. That is my problem. Because the majority of my army is robed, the robe color is essential as others pointed already out. Why is there no color scheme generator for robed chaos space marines? Okay, maybe because most of the warbands wouldn't check if their robes suits fine and if it has been teared to pieces...who cares. :)

@Cormac airt: I have to admit, that I had to google for this sephiroth character :). Well as I love videogames, I am not that into japanese style roleplay games. So no, not this kind of girlish anime angel. Dark and gruesome, with a mechanical and a real wing. Fluff side:wing was teared from.... don't know yet. :)

This guy for example:http://media.moddb.com/images/groups/1/3/2055/Attias.jpg

i quite like the twisted idea of angelic wings as a chaotic mutation, nicely ironic... as for having a single wing, yeah... if you dont want accociation with final fantasy you might wanna avoid that one, have one nad a half wing, two half, whatever, just not a single one tongue.png ... perhaps the gift of the chaos gods bestowed on a champion was torn away by an envious lord/superior? so he would have not have a single assymetric wing, but two sizeable "chunks" of wings?

:EDIT:

on the envy theme, two mechanical wings could work too, the envy towards those in the warband having them given by the gods driving some high-ranking individual to have a set crafted and grafted by renegate techpriests as a massive middlefinger to the universe... that is, if both were to be mechanical

Sure. But First i need a decent Camera Or Else you won't See anything :)

I like the Envy theme. If i would go for a lost Legion. The primarch would hate sanguinius and envies ihm for his Wings, because he was raised on a World, where everyone is an angel except of him ;)

ah and here a preview of my next terminator. Think i will make him the Champion. Still work in Progress. I am Not satiafied with the robed arm and the sword will get some Flames linger on it, so the Whole Pose Makes Sense and there are still chaos Symbols missing.

Thx, but to be honest, These are my first GS Models ever, so modeling is very Rough. But back in the 90's I couldn't afford Gs.

I am still learning how to work with this sticky material. When I See all those great Models here, i feel very clumsy :)

Big Problem: Robes.

Any advice how i could.paint them fast and still good looking? Tried drybrushing, but it looks awful and i can't blend well. Help welcome

Washes work well, and quickly. If you're still doing the robes in brown, a dark brown or black wash will work wonders. It'll sit in the recesses of the robe and leave the raised bits in more or less the original colour, adding lots of detail in less time than it took me to type this sentence.teehee.gif

I don't know if you already use washes, of course, so you might already have done this, in which case I'm out of ideas.sweat.gif

Hi, the color scheme would have been vor a Diy Chapter with robes, but now i am Going for a grim Dirty fallen Look. Black Metall armour with true metallics and white/ böse colored robes and i Tried Washes. Problem here, the Base color Changes to Brown and when i Highlight via dry Brush, the contrast is far to big and it Looks cheap.

Base color bleached bone, WASh with sepia Or Agrar earthshade. Then drybrush with Tyrant bone, some Stone, grey, ceramite white, Special drybrush white and the the Highlight with white scar. But it Looks awful. Tomorrow i will Putlitzstr my test mini on Display and you will See my Problem. Ich think the Problem is the WASh and my nonability at drybrushing.

Awesome models, they should look great painted.

As far as painting quickly, I think the easiest way to do this is to use a limited palette of colors. I am also a fan of the paint systems which GW and Vallejo (and maybe others - not sure) offer now. It's probably lazy but having a lot of color choices mixed off the shelf makes it a lot easier to layer.

I know some folks who swear by using colored sprays to take a short cut on base coating. You could try using masking tape to screen off the armor to spray the robes.

Oh, I see! sweat.gif

My nephew had the same problem when trying to wash white robes.

In the end we used a watered down light grey to wash the robes with - perhaps using a watered down light brown instead of the normal washes might work?

I hope it helps, these models are going to look incredible when they're painted.happy.png
