SW1's Scenery Project - Buildings on the way!

Why do I do this too myself? Looks like we need to keep the board in a spacehulk style even with the new boards so we'll (meaning I'm) going to be making pillars in a rock like look so it looks like the grey boards are part of an amalgamated asteroid. :/
  • 4 weeks later...

The first 2 of the new type of board have had edging stuck on and the thickness increased with expanded styrene. It's the horrid ball stuff so the tops had a layer of patching plaster to avoid the usual issues.

I've also cut out several random shapes out of the signage so I can work on some walls/pillars. Not sure how high to make the pillars? Too high and they'll stop play but too low will also look wrong. Also what material to use?

In a random few minutes I had spare the tops of the 2 tiles had a layer of PVA to prime the surface ready for the next layer. I've also managed to bevel the edges of the first batch of bases for the scatter terrain.

Looking at the boards and going forward in my mind I can see these probably getting more use and value for money than the other more involved tiles. If I get the colour right they'll have multiple applications. For example if I mount all my buildings up on tiles then the boards can represent road surface. With the pillars and rock piles currently planned they will work for underground/caverns and with some craters they can even do a moon/asteroid surface.

Think this next Friday when my brother comes over I could do with getting all the edges for the tiles cut as it takes two to keep everything straight during cutting without going OTT with clamps. It also doesn't help that with the move my work bench had to go as well so there's nowhere to clamp it to at the moment.

The no more nails tube split so I had to quickly use it up. So now the first board is much closer to being finished ...

Didn't have enough clamps so had to improvise a bit. Random boxes of children's toys do come in handy at times. ;)

Should be able to take off the clamps and improvised weights once the kids are asleep. :tu:

Here's the board free of all the clamps and weights ...

Really need to finish the grating, paint the sides and sort out the 50mm squares. Getting so close to completing this part of the board!!!

Just noticed there's 4 interlocked ]['s hidden on the board. ;)

That's rather snazzy looking great stuff man and the hidden inquisition sigil is an extra touch of genius

Lol ... The totally accidental hidden sigils.

Looking to hide some more and actually mean to include them this time around. ;)

Last night I decided to slap the edging with paint and found not all of the corners were that well affixed. So more glue and clamps went back on. I've managed to get the edges done with an initial coat of black. Will likely need to go back over it again but it now feels like forward momentum is building up. I've also started undercoating the grating which will go across the holes.

The 2 plain board sections have had the edging painted with the first coat of black as well. They won't actually need much more work to finish them. Just need to apply a fine grit/sand mix to the top of it and then paint the top surface.

Talking to my brother about what he can do with them and what we should priorities. The stone pillars to make an underground board will likely be done pretty fast. But then it's a simple matter if whipping off the pillars and throw on buildings and it'll be a man made road surface instead. Replace the buildings with craters and you have a moon/asteroid surface.

I'm glad I went to the effort of building up the thickness of the boards to allow them to sit next to the other boards. So if they represent a road surface the tiles board can be some form of Admec building. Make a wall section with a few doors for the tiled boards and stick the pillars on the other boards and you have an underground enterence or part of a space hulk where a ship is embedded into an asteroid.

Will see what we can get done today as my brothers due over soon.

Yesterday ended up being quite fruitful. A trip to b&q (builders merchant) saw us purchase a lot of PVA, sand, brushes and other bits. When we got back the sand /grit mix got slapped on with the PVA and left to dry next to a radiator. Normally it's atleast 24 hours before a sealing coat goes over the top but it was cold and the heating was on full blast. So we had very dry boards in 6 hours and the sealing layer of watered down PVA was on late afternoon. :D

I'll leave the sealing layer to dry for a couple of days as it needs to be completely dry before any painting happens.

The only issue I have with the 2 plain boards is the grit my brother has chosen is a bit coarse. It'll look good drybrushed but I'm not sure how well scatter terrain will sit on it. Guess it's just a case of waiting until it's dry and then trying stuff out.

Bad news with the almost complete board. Someone decided to place stuff on it and the paint chipped off the resin tiles. So it's surface is once more undercoated black. We might end up trying a different colour on the tiles. The first of the plain tiles is finished and the other just needs drybrushing grey. (Pics are in my scenery folder will stick them up when I get on a computer.)

Today I'm hoping to finish the second plain board and get to work on the other 2 board sections. Then it'll be time to work on some scatter terrain.

We're also considering red tiles for the more industrial board section. With the use of army painter quick shade to add definition and also varnish at the same time. The tin cost £20 from a local hobby shop so I'm hoping it'll be worth the investment. If not I can see my undead getting slapped with it.

Well the 2 plain sections have been finished and the tiles in red look rather snazzy. :tu:

Really lost motivation for painting models but on the flip side I've now got the scenery building mojo back. Might aswell make the most of it while I've got the motivation. ;)

Will post pics up tonight when I get on the laptop. :D

The most recent pics can be found here ...

The plain boards both look like this:

And the resin tiled one looks like this:

The quick shade dip varnish when used more as a wash adds a nice enamel/powder-coated look to the flooring. I was going to look at finding a matt varnish to knock back the gloss but IMO it works. So that's one less job to do.

Really need to get off my arse and finish the first board section off. There's minimal stuff needs doing to it just a few fiddly bits.

I've spent a fair bit of time browsing through some Necromunda forums picking up ideas to take the scenery forwards and I've also dragged the 2 huge boxes of scenery bits out of storage so there's plenty for bits to play with as well.

Not as slow as my progress! I've been packed up since early November due to a house move that's be postponed a few times, so not really been able to do much.

Moving day is hopefully in a week so after that I should be able to get going, although my new gaming room is a thorough fare for the cats, and one of them likes to play with my stuff, so I'm having a rethink about where I'm going to build my scenery.

Are you planning on building any necromunda scenery after the boards are complete?

I'm hoping to get some scratch built stuff built as well. I've got enough bits to do some and need to use up or get rid of some bits. The wife's allowed the boxes of "rubbish" in the house for a long time and well let's say after a decade of some of it still being unused it might be time to get on with it.

Just wish I had more spare time to get on with it. Lol ... 5 years ago I could do an all night hobby session and still be able to do the school run then an 11 hour shift at work. Now I need a full nights sleep to be able to deal with things in a functional manner.

Either way this week I plan on doing atleast a little more progress. There's a length of PVC piping left over from a job on the house. It's either going to be chucked or chopped into pillar length pieces for the board. I'm thinking it'll work better than the cardboard tubes from toilet rolls I originally thought about using. So I have till Friday and the planned tip trip to get it chopped up. There's also a few other items which are due to get the tip treatment so it's a bit of an emergency rescue mission.

Lol ... If I don't post anything more about it I'll probably be sulking at failing to find time to sort it.

Well I've managed to get 10 lengths out of the pipe. Was hoping for a few more but decided on quite a decent length to them. Currently working out a tile design to mount them on. Quite happy they're all roughly cut square and about the same length as I did the cutting with a normal saw and no cutting mitre as the small hobby sized one I have was too small.

The tiles with the Admec symbol and the fan units I plan on casting up. The plan for the Admec ones is to use in the corners so they can be orientated to have them with the tops directed to the centre of the board section.

I'll be keeping the 16 squares loose so different options can be place on the board.

I'll also be casting up some tiles with just the corner detail to the mount the pipe onto. I think to neaten up the ends I could add a strip of something. That should also help with any squaring up issues.

The grating has had a lick of metal as well as the board it'll sit on. I've slavered the piping underneath with nuln oil wash and agrax has been liberally applied to the metal bits which the grating sits directly on. Think I'll give the grating and the metal bits a coat of the varnish to ensure it can take some usage. Here's where it's at now (I've slotted some wooden tiles to act as place holders while I was gluing the grating in place):

Had a play around with some cities of death wall sections, granny grating, a 50mm mdf square plus a bottle lid and came up with this ...

med_gallery_25187_11097_164158.jpg

I've also been messing around with some granny grating to see if I could get the proportions right on some =][='s:

med_gallery_25187_11097_102317.jpg

I think granny grating is starting to become a firm favourite for adding certain details. If you look closely at the previous post with the pipes and resin bits. The some of the tiles also have granny grating applied. ;)

Edit: cheers to BB for editing the pics in for me. Corrected a few auto-correct issues. :D

SW1, your tiles are awesome! Really looking forward to seeing some gaming use on these when they are finished. I've been wanting to do some tile stuff for gaming table, so your stuff is definitely inspirational! And you got me to find out what the heck granny grating is! :thanks:

Cheers for sorting out the pics!!!

Lol ... Bryan the wife used to drag me to the Haberdashery to carry stuff. When we go now I end up spending more on things to be used on the hobby than she does on cloth and other clothes making things. :p

Abakhans in Manchester (UK) is a treasure trove of goodies. Just ignore what all the items implied usages are and have fun. Especially with the massive range of granny grating. ;)

The metals were a bit too bright so I've tried slapping a few with some agrax. I've also applied some wash into the recessed bits under one of larger grating parts. That's hopefully going to pool around the edges giving a false shadow and adding a bit more depth.

Out for the day with the kids at a museum or two so will see what it looks like dry when I get back later. :D
