SW1
Great update there, can't wait to see some action shots of you playing on it ;) I also need to find some granny grating, it would make excellent walkway material for Necromunda It's not quite sturdy enough to use unsupported and if it flexes at all paint just pops off. So you've got to work with it a bit. However if supported and kept rigid it'll work well for thinks like walkways. Ended up not liking the metals so I've knocked back the grating top to metal while leaving the recesses shaded on agrax. Now trying to shade the tops in reikland fleshshade instead. Having to two tones I think will work better. Lol ... Well I hope it does. Pics in the morning once it's dry. GodEmperorOfMankind
I was planning on mounting it on mdf or something, I've a long ways to go before I try it though. Looking forward to the pics, can we get a model in shot for scale? SW1
Took a pic at stupid o'clock last night but the lighting was really bad: Will get a better pic taken in natural light on Tuesday and I'll include models for scale. ;) Was hoping for a quiet Sunday in work but thanks to everyone wanting to pay the tax man at the very last minute it's hectic. If it goes a bit quiet I'll be drawing up plans to do the wall sections which will allow us to incorporate the plain boards with the red ones. :tu: Lol ... If it doesn't go quiet I won't. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/289269-sw1s-scenery-project-buildings-on-the-way/page/14/#findComment-4290234 Share on other sites

SW1
Been absolute mayhem in work. So a distinct lack of sketching happened this afternoon/evening. :( However I've been mulling things over and I think I've worked out how the wall will look/lock in place. Will see if I am awake enough when I get in to sketch things out before bed. Though I also want to try cleaning up a few brushes I've left with some masters soap on since this morning. Will see if it is the magic stuff everyone sees to think it is. ;) Really need to crack out the mould making bits this week as the :cuss rubber will be going off very soon and there's multiple parts I need to now do for finishing off the walls/scatter terrain for the board. SW1
While reading this thread ... http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/318502-space-hulk-tiles-for-40k30k/ I had a cracking idea for incorporating some SH style thin snaking corridors to the board. Those black squares are points I can slot further scenery into. I'm now thinking of making entrance points which I can make a separate board sections for. I was going to make my own board with more of a multipart style so this is just an excuse to get it started early. ;) So enclosed tight spaces made up of rooms and linking corridors. Leaving the wide open spaces for my brothers board. SW1
Had a spare half hour while the smallest had a nap and finished varnishing the board bits that previously hadn't had a protective layer on. :D The board section is officially finished once it's dry and I can work in the plug in bits!!! I've already got 4 tiles prepped to cast up. A plain one which can be used to mount those big pipes on as well, the others include a generator, a fan unit and the Admec sign. I'm also working in the basic shapes for some SH style board sections. They'll be based on 50mm squares with lowish walls. If (and this is a bit of a big if with the limited work space and tools) I can keep everything square enough up the wall levels I plan on having the rest of the walls and a roof that will slot ontop. So it could be either used on it's own or as a side table with entry points from a main board or sat on a board as a scenery/building in it's own right. A big stretch I know but this will be mine rather than a joint project with my brother so a lot of the time waisting due to him constantly changing his mind on stuff will not happen. Lol ... Unless I do the same thing. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/289269-sw1s-scenery-project-buildings-on-the-way/page/14/#findComment-4292857 Share on other sites

SW1
Friday saw a decent amount of progress with the next 2 board sections. The edging and foam have been glued down so it's just applying a sealing layer of PVA and repeating the surfacing process we did with the 2 other plain board sections. We've also dug out all my old cities of death buildings and just working out what colour they're going to be slapped with. The mounting boards they're going to have also needs to be decided on. I'm thinking possibly doing more recessed piping for the Admec ones and something like tiles for some of the others. I've got some granite sets style plasticard and some paving style somewhere than may make an appearance. I've also got a load of the old WHFB movement tray kits which can be used for paving that I can dig out as well. Quixus
Hmm the grates look huge. What kind of weapon is the green marine using? SW1
Hmm the grates look huge. What kind of weapon is the green marine using? The grating is more of a cover for loads of piping details. Bit of a trade off between seeing detail and hiding it. Walkways and such will have a much smaller grating. ;) The green marine is my take on an inquisitor with a conversion beamer ... So the first months entry needs up looking like this: Inquisitor Viridis Faba When not in the field Inquisitor Viridis Faba can usually be found tinkering with a new weapon or as he likes to refer to them, his "special toys". Viridis is constantly looking for technology and weapons which will give the Imperium of Man that illusive edge over the Xenos threat forever lurking in the shadows which seem to be getting longer and darker as the years pass. Willing to do what many others would consider heresy he specialises in finding the weapons of the Xenos most suitable to be used back upon them. Rather than grubbing in the dirt of long forgotten moons or planets he finds it's far easier to get relics and weapons to come to him. Viridis is to those who think they're in the know, a foppish fool with more money than sense. A collector of the weird and unusual, the more Xenos in origin the better. Many a trading cartel agent and rogue trader have enjoyed his no expense spared nights of cavorting with parts of his collection proudly on display. Just how he stays one step ahead of the Inquisition is greatly admired by his peers. For it is said hidden away in his more private collection, is a suit of armour that clearly belonged to one of it's members previously. A suit of power armour dark green in colour with the Ordos =][= proudly displayed on it's chest and the Aquila on it's left knee. With an inhuman almost robotic looking helmet, with large purple eyes that seem glow even though the armour is unpowered and no matter where you stand in relation to the suit those eyes seems to be looking directly at you. O how little do they know what a viper they had brought into their bosom, for that very armour is actually Viridis's battle plate. But this suits Viridis down to a tee. He takes great delight in stringing these greedy fools along with his theatrical flare which is helped along by his latent psyonic skills. For it is far easier to make them believe what they want to believe than planting new ideas into their minds that is against what they know or have seen. To help him keep this subterfuge on going, he sometimes enlists the help of his former Interrogator, now a fully fledged member of the Inquisition in her own right, Illa Felix. A woman who loves nothing better than to get to grips with her enemy face to face. This is in a stark comparison to Viridis who prefers to take a more supportive roll in battle. When the need arises, Viridis is strapped into his green power armour transforming him from the perceived foppish fool into a mighty warrior of the Emperor. The transformation is so complete that no one would guess they are one in the same person, cradled lovingly in his arms is the pinical of his research, a large complex array which if he is to believed is his own version of the fabled conversion beamer. What technology is actually contained inside is only know by Viridis and it's something he has never disclosed guarding it's secret jealously. What can be deduced is the power unit is much smaller than would normally be expected for such a powerful weapon. SW1
Well work on the final 2 sections of the plain board has already made a bit of a jump forward. I managed to seal, filler, grit and finally apply 2 sealing coats of PVA (last coat was watered down with paint as well as water to add a shade in the recesses). So today should be able to paint them up. :D That will give us a 4' x 4' playing surface ready to go. :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/289269-sw1s-scenery-project-buildings-on-the-way/page/14/#findComment-4304055 Share on other sites
SW1
The first of the 4'x4' playing surfaces has been completed other than tidying up the edges a little with black paint. The kitchen table wasn't quite big enough to plop the boards on flat but gives a good idea of where we're now at: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/gallery/image/176749-image/ It seems all my cities of death scenery which I think can be found at the beginning of this thread are heading over to my brothers after painting up. There's the equivalent of 3 imperial sectors (think that was the name of the big boxes of CoD scenery you used to be able to buy) slapped together between all the different buildings. I didn't get that many buildings out of the kits as I went fairly big with most of them. I do have some left over odds and ends which will be added to other scenery as it gets built. We dug out all the Admec stuff that was built and sprayed with car primer. It's likely going to end up looking like a similar colour to the more industrial board. Think I've found near enough a box worth of the Admec set to add more stuff to the mix if needed. SW1
Cheers Altis. Really feel like we're getting somewhere now. I think a concentration on getting scenery for this board will happen and then it'll be back to scratch building the more involved terrain. Feel like my hobbyfoo is slowly gaining ground so I've decided to dig the SW's out and will be using the odd model as a break from the scenery stuff. If anyone is interested I've started a new thread off for it here ... http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/319227-sw1-returns-to-the-fang/ I think the plain stuff could easily have some Fenris style scenery added to it at some point. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/289269-sw1s-scenery-project-buildings-on-the-way/page/14/#findComment-4306352 Share on other sites
GodEmperorOfMankind
Great stuff mate, I'm glad to hear your getting back into the swing of things! SW1
Next it's going to be getting all the CoD scenery knocking about painted to be sent over to my brothers. He's swapping around rooms and there will be a dedicated games room once more!!! Just at his rather than mine. So maybe I'll get some games in this edition? ;) I'll also need to work on some sort of stacking system for the board sections for him. They're just going to get knackered up if I don't get something sorted for him. Altis I'll look forward to seeing what you do scenery wise. :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/289269-sw1s-scenery-project-buildings-on-the-way/page/14/#findComment-4306518 Share on other sites
SW1
Well the Admec scenery is now a nice deep red and I've started picking details out in a metallic black. I'll then pick out a few bits in something a little brighter. There's much more detail than I remembered on this stuff. Then a coat of varnish will hopefully keep it safe from some of the expected wear and tear. SW1
Got most of the first layer of metal on the biggest Admec building: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/gallery/image/178525-image/ http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/gallery/image/178527-image/ Paints used upto now: PoundShop car undercoat spray in grey Wilkos black acrylic slapped on Wilkos dark brown acrylic heavy drybrush Wilkos dark red acrylic medium drybrush Vjelho Metallic black airbrush paint hand painted on all metal details I think I'll go back over a few bits with boltgun metal or whatever it's now called. I'm not sure about adding something like a gold or brass to the scenery. Part of me thinks it'll help break things up a little. However it's currently looking ok and there's extra details like the Admec cog signs that need extra colours on them. So adding a warmer metal to the mix might not be worth it. Especially as this is just the first part of the scenery. Maybe I should reserve the warmer metals to none Admec buildings? SW1
Got some forward momentum with the buildings. To start off the smallest building more of a piece of scatter terrain ... I've made a second one for the tall piece with the big square top and bridge section and the hidden weights are to keep it stable. There are also done two larger ones. The recessed sections will have piping under the large mesh ... SW1
Crumbs ... It's been almost 10 months since I did anything on the scenery front. GodEmperorOfMankind
Yay! Looking forward to seeing it. SW1
The old tile I did for my brother ended up getting used as a table top by some of his "mates" and you know how resin is flammable. Well if you add people smoking and using it as an ashtray as well ... You can guess where it ended up going. :( He still wants/needs more scenery so I need to find much quicker and cheaper alternatives to casting sheets up. If it can also be less combustable it would also be a bonus. So now my idea is trying to get a vacuum form box made to play around with. If it works I'll keep the masters a replacement part can be produced really quickly. The other option is forget about casting/forming and just scratch build with household objects. GodEmperorOfMankind
Oh no that's an awful shame!
