Thank you all for your (very positive!) feedback! blush.png Sadly I haven't got any more updates as of yet, but I'll have a lot of time for painting next week!

Yay finally some time to paint! Not a huge update, but I'm slowly getting there smile.png The cloth took me a while to figure out, but in the end I think I'm quite happy with the results.

(Oh and on the background a painting station I bought from someone smile.png )

Next up are all the gold/silver parts.

That cloth is simply spectacular. Any chance you can share the recipe?

Thanks! Here is the recipe:

Start with black ofcourse, from there:

Basecoat 50/50 chaos black/ codex grey

Basecoat codex grey (leave only the deepest recesses dark)

Layer/blend to 50/50 codex grey/ bleached bone

Layer/blend to pure bleached bone

Highlight to 50/50 bleached bone/ skull white

Highlight to pure skull white

As always nice work! What colour will the other cloack be?

Thanks! I'm not sure yet.. The backside probably will be black, for the inside I was thinking a blueish grey, maybe even with something of a freehand pattern. What do you guys think looks best?

I like your idea of blueish grey -be sure it won't be actual blue, or he'll be confused for a libby. Abut the black: that would be ideal, but black is a very diffilcult colour to properly make realistic cloacks in - there's a huge danger of the highlights getting too sharp, because you can't really build up colours.... cool.png

The basecolor will be more of a very dark grey, with only pure black in the deepest parts and a lighter grey as soft highlights. At least.. that is what I'll be trying to achieve laugh.png It will be a nice challenge!

hij ziet er geweldig!!!

coming along very nicely...

the only thing hat jumps out at me is the line inside the fold of his loincloth...

it is a very thick line of black...

the lighter the cloth gets, the darker the shadows look in contrast...

i would go back over that line with a 3-1 mix of Codex Grey and Chaos Black...

i look forward to seeing the finished product:)...

cheers

Thanks for the tip Jah, I will do that!

So here is another update, I did the first real layer of gold. It's far from finished, but I need some advice. I've painted all the gold up to this part the same way, but I want the helmet to stand out from the rest. I'm not that good in esthetics and am not sure how to go from here. Any tips?

looking good!

If you're going to highlight the washed gold with the same colour gold , I suggest adding a little mithrill silver to the gold when highlighting the helmet.

In any casy, If you do the eyes and the blood drop on his forehead, the helmet will pop out anyway. thumbsup.gif

Finally another (small) update! I've been quite busy with work the past few weeks, but yesterday I made some good progress painting together with Augustus b'Raass. Only two more weeks to finish my ETL vow, but I'll make it!

Here are a few WIP shots of my first vehicle model ever!

And I've also finished the gold on the captain, c&c most welcome!

After searching the web for some pictures of BA captains, I think I'll make the cloak dark blue on both sides and the ropes on his chest blue as well. I think/hope this goes well with all the red and gold. Also I made some good progress on the dreadnought today (sorry no pics), but I hate myself for not doing all the metal first instead of the red. It would have been so much easier that way. But oh well.. at least I learned something ;)

Last night I started highlighting all the metal parts after giving the metal basecoat two washes of nuln oil. Being my first ever vehicle ever, I'm still very much learning how to tackle such a large model. As I said before, in hindsight I should have started with the metal. Also next time I would start with a 50/50ish boltgun/black basecoat, followed with nuln oil in the recesses and work my way up from there. I've considered drybrushing the metal, but I don't think it would give the desired effect.

C&C very much welcome!

Thanks guys! laugh.png

Got another good painting session tonight. But in the end I couldn't keep my eyes open, so I'm calling it a night.

First I cleaned up all the red with mechrite red (I think mephiston red would be the closest current paint). After that I shaded al the recesses and lines where the armor meets the metal in a 2:1:1 mix of abaddon black : blood red (evil sunz scarlet) : dark flesh (doombull brown). And finally I basecoated everything but the recesses in a 1:1 mix of blood red : dark flesh . Next step will be the first highlight with pure blood red.

I'm actually enjoying painting this dreadnought much more than I expected smile.png It's quite satisfying so paint such large area's and seeing the model come to life pretty fast!

Thanks for looking!

Thanks Augustus! It's a great learning experience, with ups and downs. One moment I really hate how it's turning out, the next I'm really loving it.

Right now I'm somewhere in the middle. Last night I finished the armor, but I'm not sure if I like it. The highlights didn't turn out as I expected, but I'm not sure what to do about it. Maybe add a glaze or 2 to deepen the red a litte more and tone down the highlights a little? Feedback would be much appreciated smile.png

The Dreadnought looks good as-is to me, but if you're intent on applying a glaze then I'd start off with a single thin coat and see how that looks before applying any more. I find 'less is more' when it comes to glazes. ;)
