4th Tarosian Regiment - Devildog

Recommended Posts

I just finished reading about the Taros Campaign and learning about the Tau Empire in general. It's really cool that you've taken to the task of bringing such a unique and precedented regiment to life.

The heresy is hard to swallow though. dry.png

Thanks! It's a fun project and interesting to try and imagine the merging of the two technologies into functional units. What would a retrofitted unit look like? How about a new model from scratch?

On that note, here's a whole new level of heresy waiting to be the crowning model of my ETL vow. With a new Aquila-free plating technology, hull-mounted Burst Cannons, Drone-piloted Lascannon sponsons and a co-axial Ion Cannon on the main gun, it's ready to unleash a new level of devastation. :P

Looking forward to painting this up and completing my ETL vow. Got the next vow lined up and waiting, though it'll be a much smaller affair. :)

I like what you've done(even though it's heresy),buthave you considered shaving down the drones their belly so they lay flat on the turrets?atm it just looks like they are just sitting there.you could also consider shaving down all/some rivets to make it look smoother and more in line with the tau design

It's a good looking tank Coffee. I'm in agreement with hendrik though, you might shave the rivets off, to clean it up a bit more, so it looks welded and more M1 Abrams than MK V British. Just a suggestion, but it still looks good.

I agree with hendrik on the drones being closer to the turrets, however, that is still a really good conversion, it mostly passes the test of not being able to tell which parts were standard. Which is a sign that it the added parts were done very seamlessly.

Continuing my trend of attracting the wrath of the purist online community, I finished a Lord Commissar today:

Quite a simple job more in keeping with the way I wanna do my leader figures nowadays to represent Carapace Armour. (Scion arms, Pathfinder torsos, officious looking heads.) Bitzbox having a 50% sale on bitz was really nice, so I could grab the Sternguard Plasma Pistol to help this guy stand out, (plus I got 20 Pathfinder torsos for even more heresy!)

Planning to continue the 'Blade tomorrow as well, thinking I'll go with smaller, lighter vows after this. Should finish drybrushing and possibly paint chipping tomorrow, then get it prepped for the weathering powder and oil paint treatment. :D

The new Commissar looks good, though I can't help but think Gue'vesa regiments wouldn't call them Commissars, it's too imperial for them. Perhaps a better name would be something like Morale or Disciplinary Officer?

I can see these guys being more intelligent and level-headed than their Imperial counterparts, better tacticians especially. I imagine they're well-schooled in the Tau Battle doctrine as well the Code of Fire and being die-hard believers in the philosophy of the Greater Good.

I agree with, Sanguinous. The direction is great, and you do not have to be bound by imperial color choices. The black and crimson of the commisariat is not necessary. I'm really interested in what you are doing for the greater good. I imagine that if I were an aristocrat, with means in the 41st millennium even at the risk of The inquisition I would definitely travel to see the Tarosian empire. I would also make a trip to a certain shrine world.lol keep going.

I have a lot of fluff in my head for how they're organised, how they function and such. The Tau haven't fully taken over and replaced all the old Imperial systems, so Commissar-like persons still exist, (though I'm considering renaming mine to Disciplinary Commandants.) They'll typically be in a lighter colour scheme than the traditional red-and-black, as it'll help them stand out from the crowd during games while also cementing their status.

One day I might write up some fluff on the Empire and how it's organised. Maybe after the ETL. :)

Wouldn't the roles of the Comissiariat be slowly taken over by Tau, perhaps Water Caste if I know my Tau politics correctly.

Most likely, though the Water Caste are more likely to take over and change aspects that inhibit the Greater Good, while leaving other cultural aspects alone, as they do with the Kroot. They likely find the human capacity for zealotry to be extremely useful, provided it's honed and directed in the direction they want it in...

A little project I've been working on lately, a Leman Russ Avenger. Doesn't exist in any kind of fluff, but I really wish it did. It'll be a counts-as Punisher Pask most of the time, but I might write up some house rules for it. Still needs a lot of work, especially tidying up where that barrel's attached.

I'm envisioning it having the standard Heavy 7, 36" S6 AP3 Avenger Bolt Cannon as the main weapon, with it being an AV10 Rear armour Russ variant and Pask's ability would give it Rending like the other non-Blast Russ variants. I like the idea of it as a Monstrous Creature/Marine hunter.

Also spent the Saturday tinkering with the Basilisk kit. Here's my Ion Mortar carriage I'm gunna use as a counts-as Colossus. I imagine it being a lot like the Wraith from Halo, lobbing spheres of glowing plasma that flatten areas in blasts of superheated gases. :D

That's a brilliantly simple conversion CoffeeGrunt, especially the visual example you used with the Halo Wraith. Now, forgive my ignorance, but what's a Colossus? huh.png I've not heard of such a vehicle amongst the Guard before, or at the least, my tired brain is malfunctioning again and I simply can't recall it right now.

Also will you be mounting a gunnery crew on the back platform as usual or will the Ion Mortar be controlled from within the tank? If so, then I'd like to humbly put forward the suggestion that instead of a normal crew you could have a spotter/repair drone and one of your Earth Caste-trained "Techpriests" (minus the bulky backpack) from back on Page 13 to oversee such a powerful and potentially dangerous piece of technology, maybe he could use the Fire Warrior arm with the little scanner thingamajig as a sort of control device for the Ion Mortar seeming as it doesn't appear to have any controls at the moment?

One last idea, have you considered replacing the Heavy Flamer nozzles on your vehicles with the ones from Tau Crisis Suits? I just thought it might further add to that "human design with xeno improvements" asthetic.

Sorry if I come across as pushy at all, sometimes I just get little ideas & concepts in my head that I just really wanna put forward. ermm.gif

That is a truly fantastic conversion Coffee. It's seamless, and it looks almost like it came out of one box (actually it does look like it came out of one box, I just know it didn't). Excellent work I look forward to seeing it in the 4th Tarosian's colors!
