Help me choose next army (traitor)

Recommended Posts

I like the ruthlessnes of the hunt and testing myself against those around me. And I have no problem fighting dirty, even to the point of aiming two rivals against each other an then wiping out the survivor.

I also believe that when crushing an enemy, you crush them. Obliterate. Annihilate. Remove every single trace of their existence so all that is left is a giant stone foot and the name "Ozymandias".

So I float between the Night Lords and Word Bearers but I realized the background I want to create flows better with the XVII and what has already been established.

Well, the ones I've narrowed it down to, and the reasons, are;

Alpha Legion; probably my favourite. Ever since I read Legion, I love their subtle, complex methods of war, infiltration, sabotage etc. secrecy and lies... I really love their colour scheme too. If I had to say I was like any legion, I'd like to say these (tactical, calculating, one step ahead...) but really, I'm probably not clever enough.

Night Lords; just awesome. Dark, scary, evil. Probably comes from my love of horror films.

Death Guard (before nurgle); mainly just cos the Mortarion model. Although I do like their whole infantry attrition feel.

Sons Of Horus; fast, brutal, awesome models (the contemtor is awesome, Horus is incredible, etc...) again mainly a model/visual reason.

Word Bearers; since I read First Heretic I've had a bit if a soft spot for these. I think Argal Tal is my favourite character, the Gal Vorbak are awesome, First Heretic really struck a nerve with me. I don't think they're much like me though, me being an atheist and they're very religious/spiritual etc.

Iron Warriors; calculating, cold, efficient. Perturabo is bitter and almost tragic, and one of the most understandable traitors I think.

So from these, there's not really any that are personally like me... Mostly it's from a visual point of view. Probably AL are the ones I'm leaning towards most.

Aside from these, I also really like the Raven Guard, Ultramarines (after know no fear), White Scars (after Scars)... The only ones I definitely wouldn't ever do are Dark Angels and Salamanders.

It's so hard. I think if I look in depth at it like you guys have, properly in depth, I can discount any apart from Alpha Legion, Night Lords and maybe Raven Guard? I like guerrilla tactics, infiltration, stealth, unconventional warfare... And I think these all fit that in some way.

Oh and apologies for derailing :/

To help narrow things down, don't focus so much on the visual aspect since this is Forgeworld we're talking about tongue.png They've made very few outright horrendous models that everybody agrees on were horrible.

Also take it a step another step, if you play video games or any other type of role playing game where you are personally front and center when decisions need to be made, what type of "archetype" do you naturally slip into? What are your habits when playing? are you more of a Full on charge kinda guy? Long and convoluted plan to make sure you get the 100% upper hand? Wing it? etc.

Most of these traits are characterized in the Various Legions. If you get the FEEL of what you want down and pin point that, the visual aspect will come naturally when have a concrete idea of what you want.

Judging from what you've written your not so much of a Direct Confrontation kind of player but more "I have the upper hand, you're at my mercy and you will only see me when I want you to".

But that's just me.

Just take your time and don't rush yourself / Force yourself. Another good idea that I've seen pop around the forums is put the names of all your potentials down on strips of papers and randomly draw one. When you do, the moment you think *I wish it was X* then you'll have your answer or at least one less option to choose from since you instantly had second thoughts about the one you just drew.

Well normally if I play RPGs I pick the stealth type people, rogues, assassins etc. I especially avoid wizards and warriors. I think you're right about the having the upper hand thing, that's normally how I like to approach things cos in a direct confrontation generally I lose haha. But I think AL, NL and RG all fit this?

Night Lords are like KoL_Saresk Described above + they're all about causing Fear.

Raven Guard are Stealth Infiltrators at their most basic.

Alpha Legion are basically Black-ops Space Marines.

All work by getting the upper hand : Scaring your foes -sh-less, Popping out of literally nowhere or Misinformation / Information Control (very broad and blanket statement for the AL considering how they're portrayed in the Heresy).

The Night Lords, I think are the most direct of the 3. Raven Guard are in between with the Alpha Legion being the least direct. Though these are Legions and can do anything else if needed.

I think AL are my favourite of the 3, the way they've been portrayed in the novels (well except maybe Deliverance Lost) is awesome and have really captured my imagination. And they look bloody cool, they're intriguing, I've always liked black ops stuff, and spy stuff.

I think NL are probably a close second though. I do really like them too, they're so messed up it's just cool :D

So one of those 2.

I was just about to ask, is there any reason or examples where the two legions work together :)

I think I'm gonna do both, narrowing it down to the 2 was hard enough. And I'm gonna use some of the SoH spiky models for the NL to get the sons of horus in there that way ;)

Yeah, I've found working on a minimum of 2 legions keeps you farther from burnout, and doesn't force you to choose one in particular.

Alphas and Night Lords sound like an awesome combination. Think of the command and control XX legion unleashing the brutality of the Night Lords on key targets like trained attack dogs, while the Alphas use the hilarious overkill of the VIII to work nefarious schemes in the background.

Sounds like an army I'd like to run.

That actually sounds awesome and has cemented it for me :D Alpha Legion and Night Lords it is! Course that does mean I need 2 of the big £70 books... But never mind ;)

I find that kidneys fetch a fair market price of $300, and livers can get you around....

I mean - uh - work harder! Yeah!

Au contraire. You can just get te two slim books together for £50. One book has all of the fluff and the other has all of the rules. An it takes up less space.

I am also at another dilemma, decidin is really difficult. Since I have come a long way in my Night Lords, I am debating on my next force(s).

Blood Angels: a fast assault army, but am on the fence.

White Scars: more fast assault but focused on bikes and other fast attacks elements or deep strikers. I have 12 scimitar pattern jetbikes on standby for this.

Imperial Fists: based on Fafnir Rann, so the Executioners. Would use the predominately grey scheme with yellow accents and the double outward facing axes. Thinking close assault with Breachers, Vets and Termies. Would be small army, useful for Zone Mortalis. Based on the Scouring.

Ultramarines: based on Black Consuls with Void Assault specifics using Breachers and such. Based on the Scouring.

The decisions are difficult. So much to do...

Personally I think White Scars, because I'm currently reading scars and they're awesome, and also you almost never see them. :)

The thing I love about the Heresy era is how much creative freedom is allowed to personalize your armies. It also happens to be the thing I hate about the Heresy era.

To me, the VII Legion is where my heart belongs. The stubborn nature and unrelenting drive to conquer until there is nothing left. So it's not a question of which Legion do I pick, but now rather, what type of army do I build within that structure? And that's the question that has trapped me for the last year.

I'll vote Scouring era Black Consuls. That's one of my favorite Chapters. You could even base them at Tsagualsa, leading the siege against the Night Lords fortress as a tie in.

I like blowing censored.gif up, and tearing down everything you hold dear with finely crafted mathematical equations weighted in death and ammunition usage ratios. Unshakable discipline, wrapped around a core of desperate violence and traumatic mental disorders.

Taa daa, Iron Warriors.

The question you gotta ask yourself is, who are you? What is your absolute core of your being? What Legion's lore and customs speak directly to your heart?

Answer that, and you have your answer.

Excellent answer there in my opinion. Read some lore about each Legion and try to get a "feel" for yourself. As Heathens said, it's more of a "feel" thing for me than it is anything else. Both sides of the coin have excellent Legions, merely go for what feels good. What gives you inspiration, makes you wonder and create your own scenarios etc. Read about the Primarchs, the philosophy of all the Legions and you'll get it. It's somewhat like art. You know it when you feel it. I like many Legions personally, and their respective stories.

I saw this dudes stuff and nearly dropped dead from awesome:

That purplish color for contrast is fantastic

I'm glad I scrolled all the way down, because I was about to start looking for those very pictures to post in here. I think the original grey paint scheme can look amazing, and don't forget about the original chaplains!

What's different about the original chaplains? Am I forgetting something?

They were the original Heralds of the Imperial Truth. Alone, they would enter an enemy city on Terra, bearing the markings of death and a scepter crafted with the imperial aquilla, and would deliver to the nation-state an ultimatum that is as simple as it is uncompromising.

Join, or die.

Many would be butchered on the spot by an enraged tyrant, only to look to the skies a moment later to see ashen warriors with axe-rakes and flamethrowers falling from the heavens on wings of fire, coming to erase any trace of that culture. Salt the earth, and see the truth of the Emperor's will.
