Casual 30k Hobby Challenge. Month 1

So, need a few opinions. I bought 2 squads of destroyers because I planned to use them as Vets. Here's why : The grenade launchers are more or less HB sized, but I think are shorter and more compact looking. I've been thinking of using the Grenade Launchers as Heavy Bolters + Suspensor web because their size profile makes it more plausible in my minds eye. Or at least, different looking. The MK IV helms have a nice variation in that they look kinda like gas masks as well as generally looking better armored. Thoughts?

Reason behind this is I'll use a squad of 10 with bolters + 2 HB with the Sniper Rule.

Mate iv never heard that before. Sounds amazing. Got any mocked up we could see?

No sadly, still waiting for them in the mail tongue.png

Pic from Forgeworld to see what I'll be dealing with :p

Another sneak peak at the squad I've been working on for a few months now. Conversions took me forever and the banners were a complete and utter btch to build from scratch. I learned how to make cool greenstuff oaths of moment though. Here are my 23 mans all undercoated, varnished, hairsparyed, and zenthial primed:

This is the first time I have used pledge to "under varnish". I have never had such a smooth primer coat before:

Now I have to finish painting them sad.png

Most people don't need to varnish before they prime their models. I just use a chipping fluid (like the hairspray method on tanks) to get nice looking scratches on most of my models.

Basically, I undercoat the parts where I want scratches (the shield, legs, backpack vents etc) with a brown metallic rusty color. Then I seal that in with a varnish to protect for when I scrape away the primer + basecoat ontop. Usually I use testors, but this time I used pledge, which has this nice smoothing quality. Liking it so far!

e: Thanks for the kind words guys smile.png

I realised the best way to decide was, look at the Fw site, see what took me the most, and just order it there and then. Otherwise, I'd have been forever choosing a Legion.

Now, I have the joy of being indecisive over how to do the Imperial Fists scheme...have to confess, I am struggling with that!

I'm actually tempted to do a scheme similar to the Death Guard guy on their Legion rules page. I'm doing a completely mk III army, so black on the mk II plates underneath and yellow on the mk III plates (chest plate, greaves, vanbraces and parts of the helmet/backpack) :-) or potentially some sort of metallic colour.

Also, unsure as to whether to do the yellow in a metallic colour or try an do it just averland sunset but with some weathering and washes on

I'm not6 so keen on the pre-Dorn scheme, the silver/grey with just the pad and arm yellow, tbh

@Bulbafist - Holy hell. They look stunning! That looks like a hell of a lot of work. Well done! Can't wait to see what you do with them, and what comes next!

Another terrible phone photo of last night's progress.

Drybrushing for the win!

Yeah they would look good painted like that. My mate has some mangled Ultramarines on his Contemptor (who shall be avenged!) where all the armour plates are blue and the backs are mostly metal/black. One of the IF players in the +In Memoriam+ thread painted his MK3 guys the same way. Do it!

Hey guys, whilst being stuck at work for a 14 hour shift AGAIN so not been able to lay my hands on my mini's for a few days, I've been thinking about the back ground to my guys. Heres what I've got so far ( lemme know if this sorta stuff aint wanted here ill delete it :) )

Im not gonna call it fluff coz i aint no writer jus a lil look into where the 56th company XII legion came from how im hoping to develop them as this project grinds on :)

Basically I've pictured them being Terran born veterans of the War Hounds ( heavily taking inspiration from the dread in Betrayer i think it was legion master before Angron turned up IIRC) they utterly despise Angron and what he has done to the legion, and the direction the legion is going but are far too stubborn/ loyal to the legion itself to openly rebel. I do see them as having accepted the nails, so the out of combat malaise that effects them will only make their mood darker towards their farther etc. As my force is pre Istvaan I'm still unsure weather to keep them loyalist and wiped out on Istvaan III, or have them stay true to the legion through sheer stubbornness and routine. I defiantly know i don't want them to fall to chaos.... How I'm going to achieve this is another matter entirely lol

So yeah think ive waffled on long enough lol lemme know what ya reckon guys..... N if it even makes sense lol cheers

They look awesome, is that brass armour?

It is indeed. The FW Scheme makes them look a little more like clowns than I'm happy to follow (though a squad of clowns in an army of psychopaths would be, if nothing else, thematically appropriate).

The plan is to do Angron next, so I'm having a go at Brass Armour on these guys first and figuring it out so that I can spend a bit of time on him. I haven't decided if I'll run the Butchers as a bodyguard for Angron yet, but even if I don't, the elite of the Legion will match their Primarch, which works for me.
