Survivors of Istvaan: Raven Guard vs. Death Guard

Recommended Posts

That bolter prototype is awesome!!! Exactly what you would expect from the über special ops of the Raven Guards :)

I can't figure out what's on the side though...? Is it a target designator/tracker? What is made of?

Keep up the good work!

Cheers guys. Like I said, waiting for some reflex sights from Anvil to arrive then it's basically finished. The idea is it fulfils more of a DMR role than an actual, 'proper' sniper rifle. I think that fits its nature as a bolter prototype better. JP, it's actually a piece clipped off an Infernus pistol from the DC box - currently thinking it works as a detachable thermal clip for the specialised rounds the rifle fires (in-game, maybe the Rending shots available when he declares a Fatal Strike?)

+ 'Blue Crest', on my seven. With another, engage? +

...

...

+ repeat. 'Blue Crest -

++ Hold. There's been too many reports. Observe and wait for my sign. ++

Borvinus Telcantor felt something wet run down his cheek. The firefight was intense, Astartes were falling on both sides. Bolter induced shrapnel whizzed around him like an insect swarm at sundown. He checked his HUD for a breach in his helm, but nothing showed bar the rib puncture. He put another shot deliberately wide, hoping his brothers wouldn't notice. They were winning the fight and the raven guard were slowly falling, blown apart by the sheets of steel rain being orchestrated at them by the bark of Devastator squad Amenso. Telcantor looked to his left and felt his gut twist as yet another Raven was thrown back and mutilated by the large calibre shots. This was not what he was made for. This was not war. He crouched behind a dilapidated wall and checked his bolt pistol. Three shots left in the clip, another two full clips on his person. He hoped none would hit the Ravens, the thought sickening him to the core. He felt the liquid trickle down his face again. Not blood, he would have smelt the metallic tang by now. Instinctively, he licked his lips, expecting to find stray coolant, lubricant or sweat. It was just sweat, It must be, but the volume did not sit well with him. As another projectile pinged off of his helmet thanks to a nearby krak grenade; as his enhanced biology worked to clear the ring in his ears; it finally dawned to Telcantor what was happening. The sensation so alien it took him by surprise. For the first time in nearly a century and half, Telcantor allowed the tears to flow.

Finally a bit of progress on the next guy:

Long way to go with Vas yet. Not 100% on the cape, it's a bit of a blurry pic so you might not be able to see much of it yet.

And... something I threw together completely in the spur of the moment...

Teaser of a work in progress...

'Savour the taste of a coward's victory whilst you may, 'brothers'. Salvage what pride you can from this glorious feat of treachery you have achieved this day. Breathe your last unhurried breath before you realise what awaits you in the ash wastes of this forsaken world. Yours is the sin of the traitor and the kinslayer, and by the laws of ancient Skandmark and beloved Terra, there is only one punishment apt for the misdeeds of your kind.

Guard yourselves well, traitors. The ash-blind await you amidst the ash dunes of Istvaan, and we shall be your ferrymen between this world and the next.'

I have really missed alot of awesome stuff during my absence.

This is as awesome as normal, love both the RG and the DG.

disease: I see you really like blood and holes, it fits the DG though. Your conversion are awesome in particular your Primus. :D

Arkhan: Still loving your RG, especially the pistol guy, looks awesome painted. Must say even though I personally do not find RG interesting, like IW, your RG has opened my eyes for them. :D

Wow, this is an awesome idea and some great miniatures!

I've been looking for a squad-based 40k game myself and this thread is inspiring me to look into the idea further. Let us know if you guys do come up with your own rule set since I can't find Killzone rules anymore. There hasn't even been an official Killteam game for the last few editions, right? Anyway, how long did your game take to play, seems like it wold be a quick one?

Hi. You are correct, Killzone was removed from the net by it's developer due to a complaint by GW legal team. Without going into the specifics, it was very unjust since KZ was not for profit and clearly fan made. There are other fan made skirmishes out there which are very good - heralds of ruin do an excellent 40k based game which is not too dissimilar to Killzone. I also hear very good things about I28 (the original inquisitor game scaled down and improved by the community) although it could be seen as quite advanced and is very different to 40k.

Officially, you have the choice of GW's own Kill team (very basic, but a nice intro into small point games, very quick too), Zone Mortalis ( 2-3 squads say 400pts played using adapted 40k rules) and the forge world victory is vengeance campaign in the heresy books for 30k.

I would hazard that our KZ games typically last between 20mins and an hour. It depends on the dice, and how long Arkhan and I spend chatting about the ideas we have and how to incorporate them into Killzone, BFG and our 40k forces

LOVING IT

Looks like a fun and interesting project. I look forward to keeping an eye on it.

Thank you all for your kind comments. Apologies for the silence on this thread, both Arkhan and I have been occuoied with other things both hobby related and in the real world.

However, I do have some minis to share:

Blood Angels Veteran Leader:

This guy was built for a friend who plays Killzone with us, but doesn't yet have a thread on B+C. I will have to find out if this fella has been painted yet. Not really knowing the direction my friend wanted to take, I did not go too overboard with decoration and accecessories. Hard to tell in the picture, but I later sculpted some winged blood drops on the power fist and leg.

Now if that was the starter, then this is the main course. Some of you may have read my short fiction above about 'blue crest', Borvinus Telcantor who was reluctant to fight the Ravens. Well here he is:

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y264/Madoktopus/W30k/30EE5541-18A6-4A81-97AD-295A69B602C0_zpsndxgewdt.jpg

My original idea was for Telcantor to be a loyalist palantine blade of the Emperor's Children, who through choice, wears an older mark of armour compared to his comrades. However, I myself am a traitor through and through, so I have decided to donate this model to Brother Captain Arkhan. :D. In return, Arkhan has been building me a model for my own Survivor Warband. Up until this point, we have not yet seen each others models. With the secret lifted, stay tuned to find out what Arkhan built me....

Looks great

Cool conversion and quite a nice piece of fluff to go with it!

Cheers!

Thank you very much indeed, brothers. I'm not keen to take Alaric Tyr any further until I feel I've improved my painting skills a bit. He's the focus point and leader of my Raven Guard and the namesake and genesis of my 40k Chapter. No pressure to get him right, then. msn-wink.gif

Disease has already given an exemplar answer, but just to reinforce the point, Killzone really is great fun and very quick to play too. However, Heralds of Ruin is even easier to get into and very fun to play as well (and allows for slightly larger games). I would give that a look if you're at all keen. Let us know how you find it!

OH... MY... EMPEROR...

HOW do you paint those raven guard? They are AMAZING!!!!!

Thanks! It's a trial/error process at the minute. The basic gist is undercoat black -> very heavy drybrush dark grey -> medium drybrush light grey - light drybrush bright grey mixed w/white - wash with black ink until the armour's dulled down to Raven colours. Then go back over with line highlights to suit taste.

I won't pretend I've perfect the process (I haven't) but I am still experimenting with it.

For example...

+++Unknown Legionnaire, XIX Legion Raven Guard+++

cf. 'Mor Deythan'

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/IMAG0882_zpsc59cb415.jpg

He's much greyer than usual, as I've still got a wash or two left to do on his armour. Then it's on to that cloak he's wearing, a Kage-pattern camo cloak.

And finally, to finish on the note Disease did: my humble offering for his warband...

I chose to build Torvald Brokk, Rampager of the World Eaters Legion, lost from his brothers in the chaos of the massacre at the Urgall Depression and finding temporary secondment in the ranks of the Death Guard as they pursue fleeing Raven Guard elements from the Depression. Lost to the Nails during the slaughter of the Iron Hands Morlock companies, Brokk slew most of his own squad, failing to distinguish them from the true enemy. Knowing now that to return to his own Legion means a death sentence - whether amidst the ranks of the Red Butchers or at the hands of his officers - Brokk has fled into the wastes of Istvaan, finding temporary brotherhood with packs of other Legionaries hunting the evasive Loyalist remnants across the ash dunes.

Torvald Brokk

Murderer, Traitor, Renegade

Legionary of the XIIth

  • 3 weeks later...

As posted in Augustus' Arena, I have been challenged by Brother-Chaplain Kage to finish Alaric Tyr, former XIX Legion Captain, loyal son of Terra and forefather of the Sons of Tyr.

I already had a few things I wanted to get 'right' with the eventual founder of my 40k chapter. Firstly I wanted him to have a unique armament, so I gave him enormous wrist-mounted vibroshivs which in game-terms count as Raven's Talons. I haven't yet decided if they should be painted to be electrified, bare metal, or (more unusually) as some kind of incredibly dense and (when properly smithed) very sharp bone, not unlike the talons of a Tyranid. My worry then is that with the black colour scheme he'll look like a Black Dragon. Any thoughts?

I also wanted there to be a visual link between him (as the leader of my 30k force) and Ludvos Arkhan, the leader of my 40k force. I feel using the same customised, artificer-crafted Mk.IV helm was a good way to do this.

Anyway, here's a WIP of him:

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/P1020670_zpsylbpjmu9.jpg

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/P1020671_zpsrfq5wfar.jpg

Still in every sense of the term a WIP. Any thoughts? Should I stick with the base? More or less feathers? I haven't yet decided if I want to leave the wrist-blades as-is.

***Ignore the shoddy GS around the blade casing, this is to be filed down - this is a placeholder I wanted to show to get opinions***

OK, switched out the blades for a weapon set a little more practical and much more in scale with the rest of the figure. Thoughts?

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/P1020679_zpsmte3b1jj.jpg

I'm quite pleased with how the pose has worked out overall. I've also finalised the base he'll be on - I figured he needed a dramatic sprinting-off-a-cliff-face, death-from-above kind of base and this is about as close to it as I figured would be practical for gaming use.

Crits etc. welcome!
