Survivors of Istvaan: Raven Guard vs. Death Guard

Recommended Posts

That guy screams BADAISE!!! Nice! Great movement and I'm glad you switched the forearm blades

Badaise? Like...mayonnaise? But with more wrist blades? ;) Cheers, I think he looks much better too.

What he said, (points to above), the blades are much more appropriate. Also I see assassins creed 30k right there!!!!

Ha, I can't lie that AC was at least in part the inspiration for this. Playing Unity on co-op with my brother (real-life battle brother) definitely sowed the seeds of inspiration in my head.

I love it! except for the helmet. I dont know what it is, maybe its to large for me?

Interesting, I think you're the first person to feel that way. Fair enough though! :) I personally love the helm and will be using it again for my next rendition of my B&C namesake, Brother-Captain Arkhan. I think it's just a taste thing. It is definitely large (mainly due to the cheek cabling) but to my eye not overly so.

Time for another WIP, and another call for advice from my honoured brethren of the Bolter and Chainsword. Alaric Tyr is, as a few may remember, one of the last Terran Captains to survive the purge (such as it was) by Corax of the Terran Raven Guard, a purge which saw the greater majority of the Terran legionnaires exiled from the Legion under Shade Lord Arkhas Fal. Tyr's position is a strange one, as he escaped exile from the Legion by dint of being stationed too far afield to meet the muster called by Corax for the purpose of casting out the Terran legionnaires, and by the time he rejoined the rest of the Legion, the Legion was commanded to deploy to Istvaan, and those few Terrans remaining were allowed to remain out of necessity, being deployed instead in the first waves alongside their erstwhile Lycaean brothers to the surface of Istvaan.

So Tyr's position is that he resents his own Legion for casting his kind out, and is aware that his continued command is a function of purest exigency- the Legion needs warriors to fight at Istvaan, regardless of their heritage. Were it not for the outbreak of the Heresy, he too would have been declared exile with his Terran brothers. He holds rank still - and commands both Terran and Lycaeans under the same company banner - yet he is very much a relic of a past with which the Legion, and the Primarch, have severed all ties.

To this end, I wanted to represent a sense of fatalism and mourning with Alaric Tyr; both mourning for those who are lost at Istvaan, but also - and maybe more importantly from Tyr's point of view - mourning for those who were in his eyes wrongfully cast out for committing no crime other than being of the old Xeric temperament, those who will never again fight as part of the XIX Legion, and could very well - for all he knows - already have fallen to the madness gripping the galaxy at the Heresy's outbreak. From this sense of loss and isolation comes a very fatalistic world-view. As much as Tyr remains committed to his own Legion brothers in the wake of the Drop Site Massacre, and will do all in his power to secure his brothers' escape from the planet, he must be aware that he is living on borrowed time; ultimately he's a Legionnaire whose own Legion no longer wants him, and there may be very little left for him to do other than to fight and die amidst the ash dunes of Istvaan, seeking death with honour, rather than to survive and meet the ignominious fate which surely awaits him; exile and ostracism.

So my thinking would be that he would have chosen to keep his armour jet-black, both to represent mourning and as a subtle way of distancing himself from Legion command, with whom he no longer sees eye-to-eye and is now primarily composed of Lycaeans. He'd maybe even allow the ash-grey taint of the dust of Istvaan to permanently mark his armour, as a callback to the ancient heraldry of the Terran XIXth. It would also rather cleverly tie into the eventual colour scheme of the Chapter which would one day bear Tyr's own name.

Alternatively, I could keep his armour in line with RG command heraldry - black lower limbs, white helm, torso and arms. Any thoughts? I am leaning towards the all-black route for the reasons I've explained above, but would welcome any thoughts.

As he is now, prior to black washes:

Perhaps he once more donned the ash grey of the Pale Nomads before the drop. It would be suitably idealistic and defiant toward the ignoble end that awaits him, shall he survive Istvaan.

I've got a man crush on Tyr, btw. So badass. :D

Incorporating some white wouldn't be bad idea as he'd stick out, but he has more than enough detailing due to your use of Korvydae's body which also works. Stick with the all black if that's what you want, it'd look great.

Cheers brothers. I think I'm going with ash-stained black armour - so, very dark grey, basically. I think there's enough detailing on the Korvydae body to, as KBA says, make him stand out enough and give enough depth to the miniature as-is.

And - two updates in one evening? This doesn't happen often. Got some more colours blocked in on Tyr, painted his base, and did two Fury of the Legion counters for my tacticals. I'll probably do other versions at some point with more bullets. This was more of an experiment in cutting plasticard tubing and resin piping to represent expended bolt shells.

Yeah, like kizzdougs says, your mastery of the black is really impressive. It's one of the things that led me to the Sons of Horus; an easier paint scheme, but it's awesome to see it done right on the boards!

Awesome paint job on the Ravens! It is a pretty difficult scheme to get right, but you've done just that thumbsup.gif

Cheers man. I think it's still WIP to be honest. I feel like I've been trying very subtly different shades of black on each RG so far - the Tactical marine, the Thunderhawk pilot, the two Mor Deythan (pics yet to be uploaded) and now Alaric. I wonder how they'll all look when fielded together. :/

undoubtedly the best RG I have seen, superb!

You're far too kind! Personally Shadow Force Dragomir by SCC is my all-time favourite for Raven Guard on these here boards. They do seem a little underrepresented compared to some of the other Legions though. I really appreciate the praise, cheers brother :)

There are nowhere near enough spent bolt cases on that base! Add more, I demand it! tongue.png

Yep, you're absolutely right. I'm going to do much larger 40mm counters when I get around to doing full Tactical squads. These were really just placeholders for the time being. I think Disease has some really cool ideas for Fury of the Legion counters himself...

Alaric looks incredible, excellent kitbashery

Many thanks. He's definitely shaping up to be one of my favourite miniatures of mine.

Interesting. Haven't heard the Sons of Horus scheme referred to as 'easier' before! I know Disease is eager to try his hand at them at some point. I'm really looking forward to expanding this force into a larger army I can use for 30k games, hopefully I'll settle on one method of painting black that I really like. Cheers man!

Stay all Black.

Now that's a great black fella

Cheers brothers.

Well its not quite as fantastic as Mr Tyr, but i've been working on a unique objective marker the last few days.

still a WIP, but here is the Memorial to the fallen.

Base colours are on, its now time to shade it & weather and make it look 'real'   :)

Oh what the hell.

I was going to keep these secret until they had a bit more paint on them, but with external things happening in my life i'm not sure when that will be. So please have an advanced preview of some of my WIPs.

Really excited to see you start on your Sons of Horus, disease. That one marine looks fantastic. Love the movement you've given him.

Not sure how far i'll go with them yet - might use them to fill in all the blanks in a traditional DG list e.g. recon marines, dedicated H2H troops  etc...   or maybe just one off models /regimental advisors like Hoyha above and my objective marker.

I can tell you that getting his pose right took some time; i wanted to convey the sense of sneaking - maybe he is peering around a corner or being careful not too make too much noise with each footstep?  Getting the sniper rifle to fit took some time too - the arm had to be rebuilt in order to get the stock sitting snugly into his shoulder. I've equipped him with a spare barrel should the main one warp under continuous firing mode, I'll explain all when he is painted and presented with some background on how he got the name of the white death...

Oh trust me, I definitely see every ounce of work that went into that guy. And you have pulled it off. Do you sand your GS? Looks super smooth! Anticipating the finished product like you wouldn't believe. laugh.png

OK, so Alaric Tyr is nearly finished. I am slightly concerned I'm not making the most of him, though. I initially had this guy painted up with a lot more colours - red tassels and (some) gold bling - and it made him look far too busy. I was also going to do OSL on the eyepieces. I've limited the colour palette dramatically now - he's much more monotone and the OSL is nonexistent as I felt it was going to clutter up his helmet.

Any thoughts? Have I gone down the wrong path? I have not finished his jump pack yet, because I'm not sure if it should be 'active' - e.g. OSL and fire effect - to show it warming up as he's about to leap off this rocky crag, or if I should leave it deactivated. Any thoughts welcome.

Eventually this guy will have an RG transfer, and possibly the corpse of an as-yet undecided Traitor Legionnaire on the crag behind him, but as they require a bits box and access to a transfer sheet, neither of which do I have in my current country, they'll have to wait. For completion purposes, Tyr is at 90% and he'll be considered complete once the jump pack and any touchups resulting from criticism are finished. The photos have washed him out a lot, but I could still do another highlight layer.

Thoughts, brothers and sisters?

Another highlight layer wouldn't hurt-- that said, Tyr is a badass.  I've never really been a fan of corpses on bases unless it's a diorama piece-- but if you go that route, a helmetless corpse, eyes rolled back in their head with a look of shock across the face and a bloody pool forming in the shirt from where Tyr shanked him something fierce would look pretty boss I imagine.

Oh hell yes!! Looks brilliant and menacing with the monochrom-ish look

How can you be a stealthy stalker type with glowy eyes?

Minimal glow on the jump pack, looks like the HALO or BASE jumper type who would drop like a hawk on his prey, but activate the jump pack at the last second for maximum impact and to avoid making himself into an Astartes shaped pancake
