Survivors of Istvaan: Raven Guard vs. Death Guard

Recommended Posts

hmm... If you added some freehand markings on the helmet or down the back center of the jump pack in black,(bone-eagle wings like on an imperial knight!) that'd be WAY cool, but it may just clutter it up like ya said.... and it's free hand. sweat.gif

go for a death guard corpse, the color contrast of their armor would look nice against tyrs' muted scheme.

(when ya get around to it happy.png )

Unless, of course, ya think it'd distract from the model, in which case go SOH reaver for spikey bitz detail.yes.gif

keep it up!

Another highlight layer wouldn't hurt-- that said, Tyr is a badass. I've never really been a fan of corpses on bases unless it's a diorama piece-- but if you go that route, a helmetless corpse, eyes rolled back in their head with a look of shock across the face and a bloody pool forming in the shirt from where Tyr shanked him something fierce would look pretty boss I imagine.

It's definitely something I will have to try out. I've gone with blood on the claws and spattered across the armour - I think it breaks up the black well, but would value any thoughts on the matter.

Oh hell yes!! Looks brilliant and menacing with the monochrom-ish look

How can you be a stealthy stalker type with glowy eyes?

Minimal glow on the jump pack, looks like the HALO or BASE jumper type who would drop like a hawk on his prey, but activate the jump pack at the last second for maximum impact and to avoid making himself into an Astartes shaped pancake

Cheers! Keen to see what you think of the jump pack now :)

I just wish he had something to make him stand out as terran for proper fluffiness.

Looks stunning overall though!!!

I know what you mean...but what marks out a marine as Terran? Especially when there are Terrans in every Legion?

Smashing work guys, great use of parts and some brilliant dynamic poses.

Cheers! :)

There are almost certainly going to be transfers added to him later, but for now he's finished - I'm in a different country to the rest of my miniatures and I only have paints with me. Thanks a bunch!

Brother-Captain Alaric Tyr

XIXth Legion 'Raven Guard'

Captain of the VIIth Assault Company, Istvaan V Campaign

'Let the Lycaeans follow Corax as they will. To them belongs the future of the Raven Guard, a name which now turns instead to ash in my mouth and brings only bitter resentment towards a father who cast out his own sons. Let us not dwell upon what once was, but instead turn our thoughts to vengeance. We are the last of the true XIXth, the Terran Legion of old, and our path ends here amidst these blood-soaked ash dunes, on the barren plateaus of this accursed world. Let the Lycaeans run and live to fight another day. We are the ash-blind, the ash-clad demons of our foes' darkest nightmares. We are righteous vengeance made manifest. Let the traitors of the fallen Legions count their victories whilst they may. In their shadows stalk the shades of the Ash-Blind, and before this night is over, by the spirits of our fallen Terran brothers, I swear that we shall leave behind us a legacy of bloodshed and devastation such that our foes will rue the day they dared turn from the light of mighty Terra.'

-Brother-Captain Tyr speaking to the shattered remnants of VIIth and XIth Assault Companies, Jormundr Plateau, Istvaan V

Lol you fixed the terran gripe I had..... Very much so..... In my mind the terrans were more barbaric with collecting bones and skulls (not night lord fetish items) and the blood just made it right in so many ways, also the blood looks like it has a thick consistency. How did you accomplish that effect?

Cheers gents. I'm really pleased with him. The blood effect is GW's blood technical paint mixed with Army Painter Dark Tone. It works relatively well, I think. I applied it with a toothbrush which helped with the spattered look.

For anyone else interested, I was looking for previews of upcoming RG stuff from Forgeworld, and discovered that Mark Bedford apparently had a similar idea for his RG Praetor too, lol. I like it, interesting to see a similar model with a much 'cleaner' colour scheme. Before work starts in earnest again, better get another progress report in. I redid the Dark Fury of the warband, as since he's also Terran, I figured he'd follow Tyr down the route of blackening his armour as a sign of the dishonour felt by the Terran Marines after Corax's expulsion of most of their kind from the Legion. I also redid his eye lenses and jump pack exhaust to keep with the theme set by Tyr. And I couldn't resist getting him bloody. Here's a progress shot of the warband so far, plus the two Mor Deythan yet to be painted - challenge me to paint them in Augustus' Arena!

In the third HH book it does mention that he effectively exiled the greater part of the Terrans in the Legion under Shade Lord Arkhas Fal to wage an unsung war at the galaxy's edge. It's rumoured most of those guys go on to become the Carcharodons. I'm interested as to how those few Terrans left with the Legion - whether overlooked by Corax by dint of being away from the Legion at the moment the other Terrans were ostracised, or simply because they were required for the muster to Istvaan - dealt with their role in a Legion that literally no longer held a place for them. Enter Alaric Tyr and the grim, battle-hardened handful of Terran veterans with him who survived the first days of the massacre at Istvaan V...

Superb job Arkhan!!!

I can't believe this passed me by as well! When Raven Gaurd are done well...hooo boy they are great :) I must know how you did your black, did you just prime it black and just weather it or did you highlight it or perform some other act of dark sorcery?

Here: have some more exclamation points for your great work!!!!!!!!

Grah, so cool. Love how dynamic the jump pack pair are. That Stalker boltgun, though! Unf.

Cheers man. I'm not sure if it's a Stalker boltgun or not - probably a very early M.31 prototype or similar. Doesn't really matter, but the little fluff-nerd in me likes to think this things over :)

Thanks man, that's big praise. The black is actually done by drybrushing the armor successively lighter shades of grey, and then repeatedly washing it down to an off black with Nuln Oil.

I can't wait to make a full 30k force of these guys. Definitely next on the list after finishing the Mor Deythan.

Holy crap I may need to start Raven guard!

Do!

Awesome work all around, gotta say tho that Brother-Captain Tyr is particularly inspiring. Great work, looking forward to seeing more!

Cheers! Can't wait to get a batrep in vs Disease with fully painted miniatures. :)
