Forge World's Kharn the Bloody

Khârn the Bloody. Battle Captain of the 8th Company, Legio XII – The World Eaters.

Finished this bad boy. Really liked working with this kit and I hope Lestat is pleases with the way he’s turned out too.

Got to try a few new things, practice working with white armour, and found out that Dullcoat dulls EVERYTHING! Including the super-glossy Blood For The Blood God.  Oh well. Live and learn.

Anyway, enough preamble. As always, please feel free to leave some constructive criticism.

Kharm the Bloody Blurry.

Your camera doesn't seem to like you much.  But with the plethora of pics in different areas of focus, the composite is a lovely image.  Very fine paintmanship™.  I especially like the dusty black of the Raven Guard.  Black generally isn't an easy color to highlight outside of the typical edge painting.

Thanks Firepower.

Camera autofocus seems to have a mind of it's own. Despite being tripod mounted and the model centres on the focal point, it decided to do what it wanted and focus on slightly odd bits.  I think i may need to acquire a longer zoom lens and try taking the camera further back....

The black was kept fairly simple to keep the focus on Khârn.  Used a large dry brush and then a very small dry brush on the edges. It was attacked with a dust of weathering powders to match the base afterwards to make it, erm, dusty!

Are you using an SLR? Just increase the f-stop to bring more of the image into focus. You'll need to compensate for the smaller aperture by increasing the exposure time, but that's no problem with a tripod. If your camera has an aperture priority mode, you can increase the f-stop and let it sort out the exposure time itself.

(You might be able to do this on your camera even if it's not an SLR, but since you're talking about zoom lenses, I've assumed you definitely can.)

Ah, easily fixed then.

Set the dial on top to "Av" for aperture priority mode. This is just like Automatic, except you can set the aperture - everything else, the camera takes care of for you.

I think with the 350D the aperture is displayed on the small LCD on the back. If you're using the EF-S 18-55mm lens it shipped with, it's probably set to somewhere between 3.5 and 5.6, depending on how zoomed in you are. Bigger numbers = smaller aperture = greater depth of field (i.e. the nearest and farthest points that are in focus).

Turn the wheel (the vertical one, on top next to the shutter button) to the right until that number increases to about 8.0 or so - you probably don't need a huge increase for miniatures, there's usually only a few centimetres from one side to the other.

This will probably have increased your exposure time to several seconds, so the tripod will be essential, but the entire image should be in sharp focus. If you don't have a remote, a good alternative is to set the timer, so you don't have to be touching the camera when the shutter goes.
