Thanks NightHowler

With Geigor done, it is time to move on to some half finished projects.... ASSAULT squad  Rarr!!

Gonna double post for pics unfotunately

I need to really tidy up the helms, but I want any ideas you might have for them... For example considering painting a jaw bone or something on the IF helms or something as thay are quite bare and not feeling it so much where I cropped the nose piece back. Either that or r-do the gold eyelets a bit for a different design.  Thoughts??

Any thoughts or ideas with regards to pack markings etc... Want to do a nice runic,/ knotwork symbol for the mark 4 jump packs....

Thanks for looking :smile.:

Working on a jawbone design just now....

However....

Back to the painting tutorial :D

Alright, so last we saw, we were at the stage of using Standard mechanicus grey.. So now we are going with a roughly 50:50 mix of Standard Mechanicus grey and Dawnstone.

Again I keep it quite thinned.

You might notice when the paint goes on that it looks really bright. Do not panic, as when it dries it will dull down quite a bit, the brightness is just the water in the mix. It does have a good side though, as it helps you to spot where you just laid down the paint.

Off we go...

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20170303_223238.jpg

So again just catching close to the edges of the knee, and along where the light will naturally catch the shoulder pad, near the very top of the claw etc. I stop highlighting the armour at the chest at this point an a few other areas too, as they would not catch as much light as the very edges of the armour. The small amount of highlighting, helps give definition without making it all glowy.

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20170303_223307.jpg

You can see here as the light has caught the upper part of the back of the leg tat the highlights continue, but the the back of the shoulder armour is darker, where I have stopped highlighting?. It would look really un-natural to make it so bright, plus on mini's sometimes it helps to "exaggerate" the shadows slightly because of the small scale of the miniatures.

So the armour is coming together nicely now.

The next step is to run with pure dawnstone, again quite diluted.

Why diluted? Well for a few reasons

The thinner paint makes a the highlight less harsh and harder for the eye to pick up between the layers,

The tinner highlight also means you can use the same mix multiple times and build up the layers even more gradually if you so wish, or if i is not a bright emnough highlight, you can go over it again with the same mix.

Seriously diluted is better than thick paint

So once again, begin highlighting closer to the edges and leaving a small amount of the previous coat showing.

And we are almost there.

The home straight::

Well done for getting this far without nodding off

Last step

Dawnstone, 2: Administratum grey 1, dilute and basically start going on the edges. For sharp edges, such as the corner of the claw etc a tiny dot of pure admin grey to seal the deal, and done :)

Well done.... Overall this took 90 minutes, however I did waste a lot of paint. This process could be more efficient if you used it for batch painting say 5 or 10 models

Oh last thing. I take so many pictures and try to use the same angles a lot, this is because I can then go back over the pictures and use them as a point of reference. Work out what colours or highlights work and which do not etc.

Take plenty of photos and never be afraid to experiment :)

Have fun

I'm liking the helms man, some of them have a bloodied maw look to them which is especially appropriate. If I don't fancy the wolves heads when rhymes arrive from FW it is good to know that there are some other options that look awesome
I think the jawbone thing would be hit or miss depending on the helm. I don't think it works on the helm in the first picture, but looks freaking awesome on the helm in the second picture. But this is my opinion. Overall, I love what I'm seeing.

I was just thinking that. The first one more looks like fire the second one is clearly a jawbone. Awesome

I'd stick with gold on the helmets, personally, just for a tonal contrast with the cold grey of the armor.  Maybe throw in a blackline just to visually sharpen the transition?

Really liking the jawbone effect on the second helmet- I think if you "unroughed" the first one, it would read more clearly, and could be really awesome.

What kit is the "mohawk" head out of?  I need to use that bit on my BCs!

Yep, several of the legion helms work pretty well.

So far I have used some Irown Warrior, Imperial Fist and Alpha Legion helms. Betrayer has used World Eaters for some of his, and they look good too.

I am glad the bloodied Maw came through as it is a driving theme behind the helms on all my 30K Wolves, plus it injects a little colour. I have also opted for green lenses over red, as I prefer the look and with gold pinned eyes,I figured the greem-ish nightvision look would be nice. Plus red lenses and red face plates looked daft

NightHowler and Betrayer.

The Imperial fist helms, really do not work with a jawbone idea, as the vertical vents really get  in the way. An idea would be to fill them in or replace the e mark 3's with breacher helmets

The Alpha Legion helmet is much better, but I felt the jawbone thing looked a little   "ork-ish" I did have another wacky thought though... Instead of jawbone, a set of upper teeth instead? Will think on it.

The blacklining is something that I will definitely do. I am still tidying up the grey, and will black line with agrax I think. The mohawk, is from the Warhammer fantasy, Chaos marauder horesmen set I think. There are several really good heads in there.

In 40K terms, they can be wolf guard with shield and power weapons... However in 30K breachers are not given close combat weapons, so they are just rule of cool for that :)

WHich looks better as a pack marking?

Off white:

Or yellow:

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20170311_205000.jpg

The white is cool, but ultimately I opted for yellow.

Reasoning is: Black & yellow is Wolf guard, red and yellow is Sky claw.... So by using yellow I can utilise them as ether unit depending on game and points..

Now I am no sure if te models will look lopsided with all the yellow/ of white down one side and red on the other, do you think I should switch the kneepad colours around?

Do not mind the shiny fist, going to dull the varnish down to get a better leather look.

Also:

I now have a command colour structure for 30K

Yellow for assault

Red for tacticals

Black for breachers

White for veterans

Black/yellow for grey slayers

None/ pure black pad for destroyers

Grey with Deathsworn symbol for Deathsworn.

JbickB

The colours for the command structure are pretty much unknown.

This is all that can be gathered from Inferno besides pictures. Varagyr have the wyrm patterning

I will leave it as-is then :)
