Hellrender
Hey there, I have played around with Iron Warriors for a few years now, but as soon as i lose inspiration, i also stop working on anything related. Hence why my Warband is rather small. After failing my ETL vow, i think its time to step up, and actually work on finishing something. I hope this project log will keep me motivated to build my Iron Warriors into a proper warband of Chaos, and in the very least let me complete my vow. Eventually i want each unit to have a name, including the warband as a whole, but i suck at that kinda thing, so im open for ideas. One of my possible entries is under review atm, as i had started on it a while back, but didnt finish yet (as i lost inspiration...) So i was thinking to show off a bit of what i did finish from before. I will post my vow entries once i actually made the vow. I like the various flavours of Chaos, so i'm trying to mix and match those a bit, especially Nurgle and Khorne. Now with IA:13 i will definetly move back to undivided, just so i can add in more guns. Fluffwise, the warband is lead by an Undivided Warsmith. However, he does use the dedications of Chaos to archieve better results. Hellrender
Thanks for the replies so far. I made my vow: I, Hellrender, answer the Call of Chaos and vow to complete the following five units of Chaos: • 5 Siege Breakers (count as Plague Marines) • 1 Chaos Decimator Engine • 1 Maulerfiend • 1 Chaos Vindicator • 1 Chaos Rhino The Siege Breakers were a part of my ETL vow which i never got around to even start! Got to make up for that now, and hope i can redeem myself in the eyes of the Gods. Hellrender
i recently got myself an airbrush, and i find it a blast to paint vehicles now! Still trying to figure things out, especially highlighting and shading. The Vindicator is the first real model use it on, altough i have tested it on infantry models. Sadly, those infantry models weren't much of a success yet. Update time. Shield is nearly done, just needing some touch ups. http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l579/UltraWaarom/Iron%20Warriors/2014-09-26143313_zps75a8c28d.jpg And the chassis has the basecolour, shading and highlighting done. Only details remain. http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l579/UltraWaarom/Iron%20Warriors/2014-09-26143320_zps249170e8.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298525-hellrenders-iron-warrior-project-log/#findComment-3848376 Share on other sites

Sgt. Hellrender
It has been a while since i updated this. I failed both my ETL last year and Call of Chaos vow due to RL, and that RL didnt slow down until recently. Either way, had a local event a while back, and greatly enjoyed my Iron Warriors there. For that tournament i had quite a few things to paint and get ready and with the limited time that ment i eventually ended up painting until late the evening before event start! But pics say more than words, so here goes. The pics arent the best, but i think it will fullfill its purpose. Full army: http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l579/UltraWaarom/Iron%20Warriors/2015-04-19%2012.04.51_zpsk8usoziv.jpg and some close ups: http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l579/UltraWaarom/Iron%20Warriors/2015-04-19%2012.05.19_zpsj69p9zzj.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l579/UltraWaarom/Iron%20Warriors/2015-04-19%2012.05.23_zpshmiy6nhg.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l579/UltraWaarom/Iron%20Warriors/2015-04-19%2012.05.08_zpso2fxsipi.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l579/UltraWaarom/Iron%20Warriors/2015-04-19%2012.05.04_zps7ynt8ifu.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l579/UltraWaarom/Iron%20Warriors/2015-04-19%2012.04.56_zpsjqkwws4b.jpg Had some good battles too at the event. was 1500 pts, with a special voluntary challenge: only 1 detachment, and only 1 of each unit you take. (so no 2 cultists squads, or 3 maulerfiends). Those that did the challenge were in the run for a price that nobody else could get. Some highlights were: Battle 1, against AM. My DP ate trough a whole squadron of Leman Russes, EXCEPT 1 hullpoint on the Pask tank. The turn after he got flashlighted to dead, and that turned out to be an important hull point as Pask made quite the difference during the battle. Battle 2, my vindicator took a max range shot at a wave serpent and blew it up, taking half the guardian squad with it. Also my cultists killed off some deep striking warp spiders that thought they could scare them (but to be fair, my opponnent did forget to shoot with them the turn they got on). Battle 3, against 2 knights and a thunderwolf star. My vindicator got taken out in 1 thermal cannon shot, but my DP took revenge by charging the knight and obliterating the knight! Woot woot. But then the DP got brought to 1 wound by the paladin's heavy stubber! I then made the mistake of feeding the thunderwolf star my units 1 piecemeal. First the bikers, then the cultists and DP, and last my decimator. Due to the spaced out wounding on the Twolfstar they got 1 wound on each, while all my units were dead. I was tabled turn 3. Battle 4, an incredibly fun game. His army was nicely painted and we had a very good looking board to play on. Here a pic midgame: http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l579/UltraWaarom/Iron%20Warriors/2015-04-19%2011.25.47_zpstaxq49vb.jpg Half his army was flying or deep striking, while i had practicly no AA. In the end that mattered few, as he was very unlucky with his reserves. Still a good game, with a showdown at the end between our DP's, who killed each other. Not one particular thing that stood out, but in this game my decimator was about as useful as just leaving the points bare. It deep striked, scattered 9'' while already hadding taken a safe distance from terrain and stuff, then had to footslog it to the middle of the board. By the time it got there the game was over :( Battle 5, against a decurion detachment. I felt a bit sorry for my opponent as the dice gods apparantly hated him. I rolled epic, and he rolled poop. I got to decide depolyment side, and chose a side with a huge piece of area terrain with plenty of obscuring pieces. My vindi could start just inside, and rolled to the edge first turn, where it took a shot at the land raider. Prior to this battle my vindicator had archieved NOTHING, constantly scattering or not rolling high enough on to wound/pens. But now it scattered 3'', half on the monolith, half on a warrior squad next to it. It rolled another 6 for to pen, and then another 6 on the table. It one shotted the monolith turn 1, taking half a warrior squad out. That was also on the flank where my mauler and DP were, and they had now free reign. The rest of his army was on the other side of the table, trying to kill my CSM and bikers which i had sent in to lock him in place. The nightbringer's gaze of death dealt with the bikers, but the CSM were still in the rhino and the tesla carbines were fairly ineffective at popping the transport. My maulerfiend was the star of the game afterwards, having av 12, it was invulnerable in CC by the necrons. The few shots they hit during his shooting phase and overwatch were saved by the Daemon USR (like i said, very one sided rolling), and it made his 11'' charge range on turn 3 against the big blob of 20 warriors with zhandrek, at which point my opponnent conceded. My Decimator would charge in the turn after, and my DP and vindi would take care of the rest. All in all, 2 fun days. Had some good matchups. Had never seen a Twolf star, and will definetly know how to deal with it next time. I always use these events as marker for how to expand my army. I was originally going to do a more Khornate army, but with the new knights i'm inspired to go a more fluffy Iron Warrior/mechanicus direction. How i'm then going to fulfill my highlander challenge next year i do not know! I hope to get a relic pred, a sicaran or a laser vindicator for next year, or maybe a contemptor. But i really want 1-2 knights! If i can chaosify them properly then i might even skip on the challenge alltogether, so i'm looking for some good ideas :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298525-hellrenders-iron-warrior-project-log/#findComment-4023786 Share on other sites
Kythnos
Hey Hellrender, you're having some beautiful Iron Warriors there! Thank you for your tournament report too - it's always really interesting to read about the experiences of fellow warsmiths. You mentioned some models that you'd like to include in your army - which of those will be your next projects or are you currently working on something different? Hellrender
Not working on anything atm, nor have I decided what to add. But I do have a big wish list A sicaran A contemptor dread Mayhem formation Lasherfiend Relic pred with plans Laser vindicator Rapier team But that is if I stick with pure csm. If I expand over multiple detachments, then: 1+ knight Dark mechanicus (somehow) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298525-hellrenders-iron-warrior-project-log/#findComment-4023925 Share on other sites
Hellrender
After a surprise present from my wife, the choice is made. I'm going to build a Dark Mechanicus warband next to my iron warriors. Here is the first wip, which is also my ETL vow. http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l579/UltraWaarom/Iron%20Warriors/2015-05-04%2007.59.35_zpscpvjvg5g.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298525-hellrenders-iron-warrior-project-log/#findComment-4029424 Share on other sites
Hellrender
been working some more on my knight. progress is slow as may is an incredibly busy month for school, and i also started on my driving license (finally). Either way, gave an attempt at sculpting some arrows on top of plasticard. It was though going. Last time i worked with green stuff is 2 years ago, when making a skin loin cloth for some chaos warrior legs. Worked fine then, but i'm not sure here. The idea is that this knight (and possibly the house that it belongs to) has gone rogue. During the heresy is fluff wise the easiest to explain. Later and it would become though to explain due to the brain wash machines built into the knights. I could do something with a virus disrupting that machine, or slightly altering the message, but that feels a bit gimmicky, and lately overdone by BL too. During the heresy there were a fair few houses that followed Horus, so it doesnt seem a big stretch to add my house to the list. That does lead into my next challenge. I do not want to create fully fledges daemon knights. These knights must still be knights, albeit in a perverted way. I see them a bit as Night Lords. Self preservation, pack mentality, preying on the weak, etc. Definetly not the valiant and heroic Knights of the Imperium, that uphold Honour and defend the weak. But they are still as powerful as the imperial knights, and they still get the job done. They don't like working that much alongside Traitor Marines, but they can appreciate the Dark Mechanicus, especially a specific heretek that is the next step in this project. The colour of the knight is also up to debate. Atm i had the idea to go for a midnight blue, with brass trims (as on my iron warriors), but i'm not sure if that will look to loyalist like. I really want to sell the chaos theme with the paint job, as my conversion skills are quite lacking, so i'm going to challenge my paint skills by trying to paint a glowing chaos star on the carapace. No idea how yet, but the idea works in my head, now i just need to get it on the knight. If that works i will keep the glowing theme. Since i like to work with blues, and there are a lot of different shades of blue on the market, this seems a good choice to try this out with. Any tips are welcome here tho. I have a fairly standard airbrush too (0.3mm, dual action), so i hope to use that, but i have like zero detail control with that.So the plan for now, is to build atleast this knight, possibly up to 5 if i like how it turns out. As soon as those 1-5 knights are done, i will branch out into fully fledged dark mech. Not sure how exactly yet, all i know is that my Warlord will come from the Cult Mechanicus, and is a fairly recently turned Magos. I'm going with the story of an explorator fleet that went a bit to long, a bit to far. My Iron Warriors will just work as unfriendly allies. If you have any fluff ideas, i'm all ears, as i kind of suck with that. here are some pics of my progress http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l579/UltraWaarom/Iron%20Warriors/2015-05-13%2010.56.11_zpsybyiuysy.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l579/UltraWaarom/Iron%20Warriors/2015-05-13%2010.55.54_zpsaatop4xv.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l579/UltraWaarom/Iron%20Warriors/2015-05-13%2010.55.06_zpsjm1xycrg.jpg For the head i have to sculpt more of the jaw, but i'm unsure how that is supposed to look like, as neither the maulerfiend or forgefiend have a good example, and nids look a bit too alien, so i'm looking for pics that have a beast with an open jaw, preferbly attached to a mechanical head XD. Let me know what you think :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298525-hellrenders-iron-warrior-project-log/#findComment-4040559 Share on other sites
Dragonlover
That all looks really good. I think blue with brass will work fine for the colour scheme. If you want to Chaos up the paintwork, you could do various Chaotic runes, swirling ghostly faces... I don't have a third thing you could do.
