Technically I started Blood Angels when I was 15, Codex:Angels of Death, although I have been away from the hobby until now (I'm 27!). Got back into 40k due to the Horus Heresy novels and my bro has a wicked Death Guard army. When I came back, it was a bit of a no brainer - always loved the BA fluff (particularly Mr Tycho's & how he came to be), red is THE most bad ass colour scheme, and lets face it, close combat rocks; nothing better than ripping off you're opponents arm and beating him to death with the bloody stump (in the name of the Emperor of course :() Slowly painting my new 3rd Co. dudes at the & I'll post 'em up when done.

I'd like to say the background... Sanguinius, or any of that malarky... but I'd be lying.

In the very early 90's (possibly 1990 itself), I got a paint set that came with a free marine. You know, one of the ones from the 2nd edition set, static pose and 3 parts lol. On the back of this paint set was a picture of a Blood Angel marine with a blue helmet (that I later learned was part of a devastator squad). I thought it looked cool so painted my marine up to match it. Eventully the original plastic predator followed, the box art was done as a blood angels tank. Marvelous! Painted that up as them too.

So come 1996 I had a few Blood Angels painted up and lo-and-behold the Angels of Death codex comes out. The rest is history.

P.S. Except till 4th edition came out, I was tired of my Blood Angels being rampaging lunatics under these new-fangled editions and sold them off! But now with Space Hulk re-beautifying the models my passion is re-ignited. Been practicing on Black Reach marines to get the red I want lol.

i love the blood angels so much that i currently own every novel about them and have even started a unit comprised souly of survivers from the death companies and even a few who let the rage drag them to chaos it is so great because they are so badass and even have a chaos aspireing champion who looks like sanguise himself
Don't remind us of the books...

:)

I actually quite enjoyed Red Fury even though I had convinced myself I wouldn't

I would have to say that a good reason to play BAs is the new miniatures in the SH box!!!! What more inspiration do you need to create a pure terminator first company than them!!!? I don't need any more, that's for sure!!!!!

I First started collecting Blood Angels when I saw my first White dwarf! To my luck the Death company had just been released and where featured that month.

This was during the 2nd edition and at that stage the blood angels didn't have a codex of there own. After reading the special rules for the death company in the white dwarf though I was hooked straight away. I remember one of my closest mates having a ultramarine army and was so jealous of Marnius calgar. Then Codex Angels of death was announced and although I was initially disappointed to have to share the codex with Dark Angels I soon got over it! Especially after seeing Memphison Dante and the other awsome characters.

I was only a young fella back then, but when the Angels of Death codex came out they released so much fluff for the Blood Angels, and after reading it I was permanentaly hooked. To this very day Blood Angels fluff has influenced other aspects of my life. Eg when playing computer games I always use Dante, Corbulo, Tyco, Memphiston, Cleutin (who seems to have disappeared with future releases, maybe he died as if I remember correctly he was even older than Dante, I think he might have even been the sergeant of Dante's scout squad) as character names.

I stopped playing when 3rd edition came out, I cant remember exactly when that was, but I was a teenager and had other things on my mind. I really wish I hadn't after hearing how OP they where in the 3rd. Anyway I have just started collecting again about 2 months ago, and I just stumbled onto this website! I have been even more inspired by all your comments. I still havn't played a game since second edition even though I still have most of my old models, but I don't want to play untill I have some really well painted NEW models. So far I have only painted the Tactical squad from AOBR but i'm working on a assault squad and hopefully in the next couple months i'll have enough to play a game. I'm in no rush though just having a blast painting at the moment.

Same here! Well... almost. :P

I love the story behind the BA's, loved them despite the 'cheese' calls during 3rd ed (depsite outshooting several vanilla 'rine armies), and I am going to enjoy unleashing the DC with rending attacks on a mates Iyanden army!

I started playing the BAs way back in the old, old, old, OLD WD battle report where an unamed captain was smot (is that a word?) by an orc wierd boy (guess who that was :) ). God I remember capping the store where I got my 40k stuff for the shippment that had the AoD codex to arrive. Aaaahhhhhhhh good times. Edited by Iron Man I

For me, the main motivation is fluff. I love it - the sacrifice of Sanguinus, the struggle to contain the rage (& thirst) - all of it.

Upon my return to 40k, I had a plan, & the Blood Angels were not a part of it. I was going to make a small, fun army of Soul Drinkers then follow that with a small (again) Thousand Sons force & then do a "serious" vanilla codex (or DIY) chapter.

Plans changed when I turned to the BA codex for ideas for my Soul Drinkers. Admittedly, there was only a small amount of fluff in the .pdf, but it started me off & now not only have the Angels made it onto the list, but I'm starting them before I've finished the Soul Drinkers (I needed a break from purple anyway...).

I'll probably not get around to the vanilla marines now (BA will be my "serious" army), but I won't lose sleep over it. I'll most likely have a table-ready force by the time the new codex comes out - only to find half my guys will be illegal or trumped by some new uber-unit...

I haven't started playing Warhammer 40K but the Blood Angels would be my army of choice once I get the time to play Warhammer 40K in two months time. I don't usually go 'mainstream' with my choice (in this context, most Space Marine chapters are considered 'mainstream'), but I was drawn to Blood Angels right after the first time I started to learn about Warhammer 40K a month ago.

Their tragic history of losing their Primarch, their constant struggle to not succumb to Black Rage, and their fearless combat doctrine to assault on the enemies of the Emperor at close range have greatly inspired me. I've had a very difficult life in the last two years, and with it, came psychological problems that still plague my mind once in a while, but I've been keeping them hidden from other people. (Fear not, Brothers, I'm not a psychopath killer, lol! Just 'suicidal'.)

For that reason, I decided to go 'all out' in everything that I do, knowing that tomorrow I may not exist in this world. I've performed excellently in my study and works, despite my conditions. If I died, I would want to die proud! The Blood Angels reflect my personality and conditions. My psychological problems are my Black Rage, which everyday I must face and conquer. The Black Rage does not weaken the Blood Angels, but strengthen them instead, similar to how my psychological problems have made me a more resilient person.

I've drawn inspiration from many famous real life characters (Winston Churchill is one), but for the first time, fictional characters have become a source of inspiration to me and they are the Blood Angels! Fight on, Brothers, for the Emperor and for Sanguinius!

Awesome stuff, in my eyes this hobby is a nice way to reward yourself and have some fun. ;)

I am not a BA per say. I am a Lamenter by choice! A Son of Sanguinus by gene seed! Tragic Hero and defender of the Emperor's Will!

Have always loved the BA's fluff and was captured by the Lamenters fluff from the Badab War!

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD.....err....ANGELS!

i myself don't play BA, but a close friend of mine does, and though i myself play vanilla, i respect the BA's badassness.

gotta say that Sanguinius is awesome, especially his title (read it somewhere) "lord of angels". they have some great fluff and artwork, and before the PDF. of nerfhammer, they had great rules too.

I started playing the BAs way back in the old, old, old, OLD WD battle report where an unamed captain was smot (is that a word?) by an orc wierd boy (guess who that was ;) ).

He was named, actually, as Brother-Captain Erasmus Tycho by good old Andy Chambers; struck down by a Psychic attack as part of an Assassinate mission by Adrian Wood's Orc boyz. Chambers also made sure the Dreadnought was named Furioso, too. White Dwarf 160-something, I still have it filed away somewhere, as one of the earliest WDs I own.

I play blood angels because when I first started I was determined to field a space marine army with fast attack specialization. When I read that the blood angels actually had fast attck troops cound as troop choices I was in with the BA. Then I downloaded the PDF of the blood angels and I was so intrigued by their independant characters that I quickly got commander Dante before any squads. I have Dante, a veteran jump pack squad, a 10 man tactical squad, a dreadnought, and a terminator chaplain. So far I have come up with an army list that consists of shall I say 4000+ points but it is a WIP that will take a long while. But I like their unit specific rules. I also like that GW has a BA command squad with jump packs. And finally I think DC is by far my favorite BA unit.

When I started to paint my very first Space Marine I got from Christmas a long time ago (2nd edition), the only paint I had was red at the moment, because the SM on the box were red, so I thought I HAD to paint them red.

Later on I discovered they were many more chapters and colors, but never stopped painting my marines red.

Red is cool.

But, I don't play, I'm more of a painter, so don't really know how to play BAs. Yeah, you can denounce me to the Inquisition.

What army list do you use to field the Lamentors?

Have you seen BoLS's C:Badab War pdf? - it has a snippet on Lamentors.
