A thread meant for my meandering interests in the Heresy, whether it be posting models, fluff or whatever strikes me.

to start the ball rolling...

Raven Guard Part 1, Moralltach 1

“…so cousins of the XIX, it’s with deep regret that the Warmaster calls you home. The Astartes Treachery is deeper than Lord Lupercal dared believe and reaches the Throneworld itself. Despite numerous pleas and envoys from Lord Lupercal, the Emperor remains silent and distant. A dictatorship of bureaucrats rule in his name, with the traitorous Custodes and the twice damned Dorn must be the cause of His silence. Many Legions have turned from the Great Crusade and spread lies about our cause. Guilliman has declared himself free of any previous oath, and even now Lords Angron and Lorgar wage war to reclaim the Five Hundred Worlds of Ultramar for Mankind’s Empire.

Though our Warmaster brought the might of seven complete Legions against your sire and his fellow traitors Vulkan and Ferrus Manus, Corax cast aside his allies to escape our vengeance. The Serpent of Medusa has been slain by the illustrious Lord Fulgrim and Dragon of Nocturne was obliterated on the battle field. After leaving his Legion on the field of battle, Corax has returned to Deliverance and now uses illegal genetic research to create monsters from what’s left of his Legion.

The Lion, the Khan, Russ and Sanguinius. All have turned from the ideals we fought to preserve. The Lion rages across the Thamas system, while Lord Kurze struggles to halt the massacres. The Khan has disappeared and answers nobody’s calls, but his presence at shattered Prospero is an ill sign. Poor Prospero, the center of knowledge and a beacon for all sciences. Now nothing more than dust and ash, a planet of dying dreams, killed by the mongrels of Russ. Sanguinius has disappeared as well, but our last reports had him in alliance with the Battle King of Ultramar.

This is why we seek your aid. Corax showed his jealously of our Warmaster by casting in you into the darkness of the galaxy. In his pettiness, he saw your loyalty to the Great Crusade and its master as a betrayal to him. Now is the time to show your strength! Return to the realm he denied you and prove yourself free of any such disloyalty! The Warmaster once valued your strength, and in this dark time, he knows he can count on the loyal, rejected sons of a traitor to do what is needed to save the future of Mankind.
For the Warmaster!

For Mankind!”

With a clatter the holographic image of Commander Aziekol of the Sons of Horus pounded his gauntlets, palm overlapping to the center of his torso, forming the pre-Corax salute of the Raven Guard. The image faded into the projector, leaving three figures silence and full of questions. This was the latest in a series of messages to reach them, each beseeching their return and casting somebody else as the traitor. The messages had created a stir in the far roaming Nomad-Predation fleets of the XIX. Many had already declared for the Warmaster and disappeared into the Warp or simply went further into the void, but the many messages presented conflicting information. The remnants of three Nomad-Predation fleets had come together to decide what their fates would be.

The first to break the silence was Strike Captain Baen of the 17th Fleet, commander of the largest fleet present. The long years of warfare and little reinforcement left him with a single Battle Barge and several Strike Cruisers. Strike Captain Baen once commanded thousands of Legionaries, but now had less than 700 Brothers under his command.

“The Warmaster had always treated us with respect, and was fairer than the convict.” The emphasis on convict left little doubt to who Baen referred to, the word positively overflowing with hatred from years of bitter rejection. “And I mean no offense by that word Brother Donal. I know you are of Deliverance, but if you cared for his commands you’d shackle your gifts. I think it is past time to return to the Ravenspire and purge those not loyal to the Great Crusade. The Warmaster has called us home.”

The second figure in the room nodded his acceptance of Baen’s apology and poor word choice. Brother Donal Moralltach was gifted with the powers of the Warp and had been among his Legion’s Librarius, before a directive from Deliverance had ordered it to be dismantled and the Librarians redeployed in the Legion. Moralltach had rejected this command, and repeatedly refused to be equipped with a psychic hood. Being cast out into the void allowed this betrayal to take place, and his fellow Legionaries had seen the command as another insult from a distant, uncaring Lord.

A voice box boomed across the room as the third figure as the metal form turned to look at both Baen and Moralltach. Honored Atticus had been among the first of the Raven Guard to leave Terra, and many worlds had claimed a piece of his life blood. It was only during the eradication of the xeno Eldar worldships had his body passed beyond the skills of the Apothecarium to heal. Atticus refused death however, and his dying mortal frame was placed in the Contemptor Dreadnought that now served as his life support unit and suit of war. Honored Atticus and Moralltach had fought alongside so frequently these last few decades that their separate fleets were a single fleet for all practical purposes, though honor and tradition had demanded they recorded their accomplishments separately.  Together they commanded just under 117 Legionaries and three strike cruisers.

“It is my opinion that if the Emperor is silent, and so many of his sons turned from their oaths, our only option is to drive to Terra itself and resolve this. The Emperor can handle any of his gene-forged children, if he is free to do so.  To give the Emperor his voice would do more than killing any number of soldiers.”

“Very well put, Honored Atticus, but the Warp denies us the road to Terra. The storms grow stronger, and despite our navigator’s efforts and Brother Donal’s insistence, the only stable path head to the Warmaster. It is so decided. Return to your ships and prepare for the journey home. The Raven Lord has turned from Terra’s dream, it’s time to become his nightmare.” With a curt nod to each nod to both Moralltach and Honored Atticus, Baen left to his preparations.

A Thunderhawk returned Moralltach and Honored Atticus back to their command ships. The trip had been silent, as Moralltach was deep in his own counsel and Honored Atticus knew better than to try and pry answers from the withdrawn figure. With a comradely rap against his armored torso, Moralltach left the Thunderhawk to his own ship.

Despite the messages received, Moralltach was very troubled by the missives from the Warmaster. Much had not been said, and the Warp seemed to wax and wane around him. The cawing of distant ravens sometimes broke through his mediations, but the fierce tides of the Warp silenced them. It was in relative silence that Moralltach brought his fleet alongside that of Honored Atticus. The larger fleet of Strike Commander Baen was still positioning itself to enter the Warp when the private comm-link broke through Moralltach’s preparations.

“Now you have to listen to me little brother.” Moralltach smiled at that, for it was an old joke between Honored Atticus and himself. When Atticus was still flesh and blood they were as different as night and day, and it was by Moralltach’s counsel that Atticus escaped death so many times. It was when the bloodlust overpowered such restraint that Atticus fell to the Eldar witch’s blade, and since then the two each called the other ‘little brother’.

“Baen is allowing his bitterness to color his judgement. You saw that as much as I, and we both know this strike at Deliverance is to quench his desire for vengeance than any practical purpose. Yet you stayed quiet.” The question was heavy in Atticus’s words despite it not being voiced aloud.

For a long moment Moralltach was silent, but finally found the words to speak. “I agree that this strike is folly, but I disagree with heading to Terra itself. For many weeks I have been troubled by the messages we received and the evidence presented by them. I think we need to see this Istvaan with our own eyes, make our own decisions.”

“Truly, you think the dead world is the correct course?” This time the question was blunt, no subtly in the voice box. “If that’s your desire, then to Istvaan we go. Let us visit Death and then decide who deserves it.”

“Brother Donal, Honored Atticus. Why are your ships not placed on my exit route?” The voice of Strike Captain Baen came across the ships voxspeaker. “I’ve received further calls for aid from the XVII. They are being pounded by the so-called Battle King and have requested aid. It would be a fine gift to the Warmaster for our arrival to save his loyal soldiers.”

Honored Atticus responded first “Forgive our delay, but Captain Moralltach and I have agreed to go to Istvaan itself, and see what has happened with our own eyes.”

“Your own eyes?! You’re a collection of bolts and scrap holding together a dead man. I’ve allowed your constant delay long enough. Either move your fleet to my coordinates or be designated as a traitor to the Warmaster.” The words of Strike Captain Baen were matched by the actions of his fleet. The Battle Barge Death from Darkness turned to face the smaller strike cruisers, and the message couldn’t be clearer: join or die.

Over the private commlink Honored Atticus called for Moralltach. “It’s as you feared, Baen has lost himself, and wants us to join him in damnation. Execute Plan Flight 5-X.”

“Are you certain? Flight 5-X would mean…“ Moralltach began, but was quickly cut off by the hails of Death from Darkness.

“Have you reached a decision?! Declare now, or die a traitor’s death!” The weapons of the Battle Barge trained on the smaller fleet, and Moralltach knew it wouldn’t take much effort for Strike Captain Baen to destroy the combined fleets.

“For the Emperor!” came across the vox link. The fleet of Honored Atticus surged forward to engage the Battle Barge, opening fire as they raced to death. “Moralltach, better run fast as we’ll only buy you minutes. Ave Imperator, Victory or Death.” Shutting down all vox links, Honored Atticus brought his two ships to engage the Battle Barge and block Moralltach’s command ship from Baen’s fleet.

“All souls, prepare for immediate entry into the Warp.” Moralltach released the ship’s vox speaker, and looked towards his bridge crew. “Let’s hurry now, death is behind us”

The Strike Cruiser left the battle, quickly enacting the plans Honored Atticus insisted they form months ago. Istvaan’s coordinates were already plotted, the path prepared. With a slight lurch and shame settling in his mind, Donal Moralltach took his ship into the Wap.

Yep, I have one or two of them lying around and another 4-5 combi-kits from the new Tactical Sprues.

I am thinking, for the Mor Deythan squad, a mix of combi weapons like 2 c-meltas, 2 c-flamers and a c-plasma. or 2 c-meltas, 2 c-flamers and a plasma gun. I always forget they can get a standard special weapon.
I've used most of the combi weapons on my Wolf terminators, but think I can still scrounge a few.

WLK

I dont blame you. Only the Alphas, Iron Warriors, and Ravens are left for conversion kits and special units. The Fists are done, but I expect FW to follow the 'upgrade parts' instead of full units for the Ravens. I imagine only Laernean Terminators, Tyrant Siege Terminators, and Dark Furies will get specific kits, while Headhunters, Mor Deythan, and Iron Havocs will have kits like the Templars and Phalanx Warders.

Your Ravens have the feel I get from the art on the inside of the Codex Space Marine cover, which has always been my favorite piece of Warhammer Art.

Raven Guard Part 2, Collins 1

The actions of the Iron Warriors had seemed odd, reinforcing the primary and secondary Drop sites when the enemy was in front of us. But we ignored that and continued fighting. Perturabo’s brooding sons would join us soon enough, we thought, and together we’d eradicate the traitors…it still seems wrong to call them that. When Lord Corax ordered us to abandon the field, I had my signals operator re-confirm the order. A bolt round erupted from the back of his head before he could finish that command.

Then the Iron Warriors soon joined us…after unleashing volleys of bolter fire into our ranks. Those first few moments were the most confusing I’ve experienced in this galaxy. Those moments of hesitation and doubt cost me nearly forty of my men. By the time I had overcome the shock of seeing our four supporting Legions opening fire into our ranks, their vanguard was already crashing into us. My mistake, my weakness compounded the losses we suffered that day. I accept full responsibility for those losses.

The Raven Guard of the 11th Company reacted with all the fury of their sire. They fought until their bolters were empty, and then used the bolters to bludgeon their enemy to the ground. We refused to give ground, and the Iron Warriors and Night Lords crashed into us, but not through us. We gave our lives so our brothers could make their escape. We waited too longer for our cousins from Nocturne however, and that’s when he appeared.

Cruze will be a vision of death for me to my final days. He appeared as quicksilver, too fast to follow with our eyes or the targeting data from out helms. The only thing not in motion was his face, which he wore with a joyous smile, but his eyes were dark as thunder. He killed my brothers and cousins as easily as he breathed, his twin claws ending lives with every sweep. It was then that I knew we were doomed, that I wouldn’t escape from this field. No sooner than I had this thought settle in my head, preparing myself for a doomed charge against a breathing avatar of death, did the Raven Lord arrive.

Corax thundered into Cruze from behind with a scream so full of emotion, so raw with hurt and a, it scarred those who heard it. The two demi-gods tumbled through the corpses and debris, landing in a tangled mess, with Lord Corax being the first to his feet. The Lord of Deliverance looked around and within moments began ordering the retreat. He ordered us to abandon the field and issued rally points in the combat chant of the old prisoners. It is to my great shame that I followed his orders, for the last I saw of Lord Corax was swallowed by flame.

We’ve been running for days now. I had rallied the remnants of the 11th and 17th Companies, and picked up a squad of Salamanders as we boarded our Storm Bird. The Bird had barely touched off when rocket fire destroyed its left engines and we plummeted back to the earth. We took no losses in the crash, and fled on foot into the hills. The first week of our escape we were constantly attacked by the World Eaters, who were atleast kind enough to announce their attacks with the battle cries. Much worse were the attacks of the Night Lords and Alpha Legion…the Alpha Legion often appeared in stolen armor and opened fire as we accepted them into our makeshift camps. The Night Legion would always attack in utter silence, letting the cries of their victims alert us.

It has taken us many days, and many more lives, but I have finally brought the surviving Legionaries under my command to the final rally point. There are rumors that Lord Corax has survived, and is gathering his children for a last stand against the traitors. We leave once night falls…we. Well we aren’t all leaving. The final push to freedom will be close fought, and there are numerous patrols between us and our goal. Our walking wounded refuse to fall, but I won’t be counted among them. I lost my legs to a plasma explosion last evening, and spent my final hours amongst my brothers making arrangements. Any traitors who find me will find this Raven ready for them, overloaded plasma coils and all. Veteran Sergeant Collins has a flair for irony…I’m turning command of the Unkindness to Collins, with a final order to survive. Survive and avenge our dead.

The rumble of distant artillery echoed across the shattered hills of Isstvan V, loud enough to drown out the screams of the damned. The world was fated to be the scene of a massacre, and now that its role had been played, Isstvan V slowly died from the hells unleashed upon it. Weapons too terrible to name had brought death in numbers that seemed impossible, in a battle that should have never been fought, starting a war destined to claim trillions. While the battle had come to a tragic end months ago, a silent war was now being waged. The victors now prowled the barren plains and remnants of once continent spanning forests hunting the traces of the vanquished. The shattered Legions, scattered to the four corners in an almost futile attempt to escape, embraced any terrain to hide themselves from their hunters.

In this war of ambush, assault and escape, the remnants of the Raven Guard Legion found themselves constantly on the move, for any attempt to rest and regroup brought the hunters and death closer. While the goal of the survivors was to link up with their Lord, many of scattered bands were prevented through the blundering of the World Eater armored columns. The remnants of the Raven Guard fought and fled, but their numbers were few and dwindling while their pursuers seemed to be ever present. On the 98th day of their breakout and flight across the Urgall Depression, the Raven Lord and those of his sons he could save were delivered from the World Eaters wrath. Through cunning and desperate courage, a small fleet from Deliverance had managed to extract the remnants of the Raven Guard Legion from hell.

A small band of survivors had missed the extraction. They numbered just five, and they quietly watched as the rage of the World Eaters carried them through missile volleys in a vain attempt to engage the Raven Guard before they could board their ships. Though the five shadows could see their Lord without aid of the helmet’s optics, they were prevented from joining the exodus by a tide of white armored berserkers. They had fought without stop for days, killed foes with bolter and combat blade, in anger and in silence. They thought if they moved fast enough they might escape this walking nightmare. If they could feel anything, they’d feel despair, maybe even anger at their current situation. But such emotions had been burned from them over many midnight murders. Now they only had one goal, one desire: vengeance for the dead, vengeance for the living.

The Mor Deythan turned from their denied escape and faded back into darkness.

  • 4 weeks later...

since I havent posted anything in a while, here is the 4k list I'm working on:

LoW: COrax

HQ
Praetor with jump pack, paragon blade, standard load out.
Librarian Centurion

Elites
Apothecary x 2
Cataphracti Terminators x 5, with mix of weapons from Cataphracti special weapons kit
Contemptor Dread in Drop Pod with multi-melta and chain fist
Mor Deythan in Darkwing with assorted combi-weapons, thinking flamers for squad level specials (the idea of twin-linking+rending make me cackle)

Troops
Assault Squad x 10 with Axe, Maul and Thunder hammer sarge
Assault Squad x 10 with axe, sword and power fist sarge
Legion Tactical Squad x 10 with lightning claw sarge
Legion Tact Support x 10 (Volkite Cavaliers)

Fast Attack
Legion Speeders x 2 (Multi-Melta + 2 HK Missiles)
Dark Fury Assault Squad
Legion Storm Eagle

Heavy Support
Fire Raptor Gun ship

This comes out to 3992 points.

I think is horribly small, but I've little to no 30k experience. I know armor is going to be a problem, as the meltas I packed will largely be negated by the wide use of ceramite armor.

The one thing I am very unsure about is the Fire Raptor. I may replace it with a heavy tank, but dont want to lose the Rapid Response Feel of the current list.
Not sure on the moment, but as its one of the few models I dont have for this list, figuring it out is not a high priority at the moment.
It seems like you have a lot of minimum strength squads. I haven't done any tabletop general-ing in quite some time (and none of it in 30k), but at the 4,000 pts level, it seems like a misstep not to roll with bigger squads. All of your opponents will.

I havent played any 30k, but am limited by what I can currently afford to pick up. I originally was going to field the Tactical squad at 19 strong in a Storm Eagle with a Librarian, but after hearing of how devastating the Volkite guns can be wanted to run a squad of them. This knocked down the Tactical Squad, but was thinking of turning the 2nd Assault Squad into the 10 more Tactical bodies.

For Minimum Squad-ness, I make the Exception for Assault Squads: They cost as much as a 20 man squad at 10 so its hard to build around 20. Also, 20 assault marines becomes really unwieldy...

I have little faith in Assault Squads, but that stems from my experience with the 40k version of them. I am hoping that the 30k squad works better, and the fact they can actually buy special close combat weapons seems to indicate that.

WLK

But besides his tactical support squad, everything on his list is at minimum squad-ness, right? (I'm 6,000 miles away from my books, so I'm going from memory) Is a beefed up tac squad any less unwieldy than an assault squad? And how so (if you don't mind a slight thread derailment)?

I just think that if WLK is going for an assaulty the rapid response/assaulty feel, he should find the points for a full blown assault squad or two. I know hisdudeness will agree. His World Eaters list is built around assault squads.

Edit: All that said, I'm still all about true grit tactical blobs...

The Mor Deythan are 9 of 10, but the rest is min squad sized.

I *think* a beefed tactical might be more wieldly than a maxed assault squad mostly because they are easier to transport. Im not sure though, more of a builder than 30k gamer at this point.

so far they arent much more than RG Assault Marines with Lightning Claws. Im unsure how what im going to do to make them pop. the main difference between them and normal Assault Marines is the jump packs and their weapons.

I grabbed an ebay auction for 15 of the sanguinary jump pack, and with the mk4 assault squad i already have, the jump packs f the above Dark Furies will help them stand out. As will the white strips of their helms, showing them as vets compared to the normal assault marines.

I look at the pic and see tons of stuff that need fixing, and as the jump packs were second hand, im not totally crazy about them or the condition i got them in...but if anybody pushes me, im claiming their are battle field damaged. yea, that sounds convincing....

WLK

I would like to say make the Ravens Talons/Lightning Claws the focal points of the unit but I feel like they'd be painted Black. If you don't share the same view, you could give them a cool Ice Blue.

http://been-seen.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Ice_Blue_Slide1.jpg

Could be easily done by making a slight Blue-to-white gradient and slapping on some Guilliman Blue glaze over it all. But the claws are small and might make it a bit of a hassle..

If you feel up to it, you could try painting the Jump Pack reactors as being "on" kinda like:

http://www.powerlabs.org/images/redblades.jpg

or

http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/18oya66xln6b2jpg/original.jpg

They shouldnt be too hard to replicate, I feel and would add some color to the mini.

Edit: if you got the wings that came with the SG Jump Packs, you could try putting them onto your Dark Furies.

I doubt I have the talent/patience to pull off the turbine look...most of my models are what I call the 3ft Style. They look on target from 1-3ft away, but the closer you get the more screw-ups you find! I may try it though, thanks for the suggestion.

I have used the sanguinary guard wings in the past on a RG captain for a now sold 40k army, but the packs I got were wingless. I am now seriously considering the wings for their distinctive look.

Thank you!

Here is a slight update on what the Dark Fury squad will look like. I'm still waiting on a set of Sanguinary guard wings I purchased a week or two back, and will be picking up 4 from a member of my gaming group. So far, I'm in the process of painting/cleaning up the DF's Chooser of the Slain

all for now.

WLK

I like the dark fury. What kits did you use for them? I see sanguinary guard jump pack mk 4 legs and are those vanguard bits in their as well? I think he'll look Gwen after some touching up. Keep up the good work and I like the fluff!
