Tomorrow my Raven Guard will again see battle against their fallen cousins...but this time they wont wage war alone!

 

My nemesis, Rayray, asked if I wanted to play a bigger game than usual. My answer, as it always is, was "duh". So we bumped up to 8,000 points. I was exicted before realizing that my RG alone couldnt reach this number, not yet. So I brought my Wolves into the game! but first, that agreed upon terms between Rayray and myself:

-no Super Heavy Lords of War (so Corax is in! Im cool with that. Back to the shelf with you 3 Imperial Knights and 2 Shadowswords!)

-2 CADs. Im thinking he wants to try out some tricks, and this allowed for easier list building. 

---to this, rules for 1 CAD will only impact their CAD. no crossing over.

About my forces: 

The reasons I went with the CoF formation:

(1) Rayray brings an obscene amount of models so I figured I'd bring a small force to ease game flow 

(2) I wanted something that could "believably" appear in 30k. The Redeemer tank comes post-Heresy,but those cannons are too fun to pass up 

(3) it has been said by past opponents that I rely too much on Thunderwolf Cav. I do have around 40 of them...so I get what they are saying. Ive never been a big fan of TDA in 40k, but have near a company sized force of them. So I built an army around them.

(4) I really dislike Murderfang, and rarely get him into combat. I hope tomorrow brings better luck

(5) Rayray has had a difficult time dealing with my Dreadnoughts...so I brought more than I usually would just to mess with him. Im sure his big Daemons would love the attention

Awesome. 

 

As much as I love the Heresy, most games I play are against 40k armies at typical 40k points levels. Playing a Heresy army at 2000 points always feels a little bit like a Corvette stuck in a 45mph zone. Just can't really stretch its ample, sexy legs, you know?

 

These big battles you've been doing lately have been terrif for really illustrating how awesome a full-sized heresy battle can be!

Well Rayray believes (as do I) that anything under 4k is a skirmish. 

 

It allows us to bring pretty much whatever we want and have known each other long enough (somewhere around 15 years) to make a fun list with teeth.

 

I will give Rayray Vindicator blasts and bolter shells. Nothing else.

I love that Balrog miniature blood thirster, is it similar to the daemon Prince in height. I was thinking about using it for that.

Maybe a bit longer.
We each had 8k armies 
-took smoke breaks (or would it be vape breaks? I don't understand the terminolgy) nearly every player turn (or air break for me)
- went out for lunch
-spent time BSing about anything under the Sun
-stopped to watch whatever movie was on the tv (I usually keep a movie on the tv for additional noise and laughs)
-stopped to look up or or discuss rules (some of which weren't even in our game, but in something we read online during the week)

We both cleared our days and wanted to do nothing more than game. The photo album is over 100 pics, and I hope to get them up today sometime

I can say that the Wolves and RG took horrendous losses, many cultists were vaporized, heroes fell and villains were laid low.
It was quite an intense and epic game, with the momentum swinging wildly between armies

The Bloodthirster, widely feared for their tactical prowess, lunges straight toward my front lines with the (smarter) Daemon Prince taking cover being him. The Flesh Hounds prove once again how fast they can be and wind up scary close to my army

things dont look much better over there...while they cannot charge due to their Scout move, the Flesh Hounds are close enough to pee on my RG Tactical Squad and the Maulerfiend gibbering like an idiot behind them does marvelous things to the RG's calm. A pack of Warp Talons lurking behind the Maulerfiend has my attention and healthy dose of hate

The RG and Wolves open fire, killing all but one of the Warp Talons, destroying a Flesh Hound squad and probably other epic stuff...nowhere near enough. I think I did 3 Hull Points to the Spartan and downed a few Rhinos, only to learn a terrible Lesson when playing against the Khorne Daemon Kin codex...Khorne cares not where the blood flows. Yea, killing the riff raff of the enemy makes them stronger. Joy. My Contemptor with dual fists charges and locks in combat with 5 Flesh Hounds

Corax and the Dark Fury Assault Squad wipe out some Flesh Hounds as well, leaving them exposed in front of the bulk of my army. I did Redeemer template some Bikers, which was fun. Who then gave Rayray more Blood Tokens, which wasnt fun.

VICTORY TO THE LOYALISTS!

 

now for some comments about the game:

 

1) I've read about, but never fought, the Daemonkin Codex. Ray spawned 2 Bloodthirsters from it (1 from slain Warlord, 1 from Blood Tokens), a Daemon Prince, pack or 2 of flesh hounds and bloodletters (forgot exactly how many times) and granted Feel No Pain and extra attacks to his Daemonkin WAY too many times. 

I wont lie, I was getting a bit frustrated. Ray play them smart with multiple small units of Hounds, Cultists and Bikes. Each time I killed the riff raff the army got stronger! it was mind boggling. Ray was making an obscene amount of his feel no pain rolls, and this gave him an edge I was scrambling to negate much of the game. 

 

2) No matter how tough they are, anything goes down with enough fire power thrown at it. While the Spartan survived with a single hull point left, killing 2 bloodthirsters and 2 daemon princes absorbed a crap ton of shooting.

 

3) a lack of psykers prevented me from challenging Pookie. This meant he cast Endurance with relative impunity each turn. It was sickening. I simply couldnt hit Pookie with enough hate to stop him due to the mass of targets on the field. Ray was smart with how he used the fat bastard.

 

4) I really hate Flesh Hounds. Like hardcore hate. 

 

5) Corax got very lucky surviving the Bloodthirster and pack of Terminators 2 heavy flamers and combi-meltas.

 

the game ended down to the wire, with a few dice rolls deciding who won. As far as I am concerned, Ray had me beat. I just couldnt stop him and played to survive and score objective cards.

 

But the important part is that we both had alot of fun, laughed our butts off more than once, and a new joke was formed:

 

The Daemonkin Codex is the Oprah of Chaos. You get a feel no pain save, YOU get a fell no pain save, EVERYBODY GETS A FEEL NO PAIN SAVE! FREE BLOODTHIRSTERS FOR EVERYBODY! 

Almost enough to make me wanna join the Dark Side.

They seem super fun and spectacularly fluffy. It feels exactly like what a XIXth legion company holding off a daemonic incursion should feel like.

Seriously though fantastic report you guys are killing it down there. Being able to play such large games  with a good friend is just awesome.

@Dantay_xv: Thank you very much. I know I had a blast, and know Ray had a maniac gleam in his eye on frustrating me so greatly. He had me on my back foot from turn 2 until 5, and we both knew it. He played smart and smothered every possible objective, meaning any Secure Obj card I pulled he'd likely score. That, when combined with multiple greater daemons, was pretty nuts.

 

Im slowly coaxing Ray in, and expect to see 30k across from me soon.

@Flint13: If you mean "Holy crap, they appeared behind us! Sir, more infront of us! Game over man!" than yes, it did play out like it should have. If the game didnt end at 5 i think Ray would have gotten damn close to wiping me.

 

The hand is Ray's and I think he is mocking the Warp Talon's failed charge. Both of the heavy walkers made it into combat, the jump pack dude failed.

 

@Bladewolf: Well I work well with team-mates. I can bring my Wolves and we can try to out armor each other. (Warning, all i got atleast 10k fully meched up)

 

And thank you for both comments. Ray and I enjoy these matches alot, and send numerous text messages during the work week talking smack to one another. It gets quite hilarious.

The lascannons belong to another project that was scraped...but I didnt think of that using them here. I kinda "lose" stuff on my main desk on a regular basis. I mean, I know its somewhere in the loft, but where exactly eludes me.
