Vanquishers DIY Chapter Project Log (Painting Update Mar 7)

Recommended Posts

I'm starting this thread in the hopes it will help motivate me to paint my army to tabletop quality and to flesh out the character of the Chapter. I've had this idea for a DIY Chapter for close to seven years and would finally like a fleshed out army decked out in their colors. I figure I'd start with a 2000 point army with a heavy tank theme, since I love the tank aesthetics of the Space Marines.

Overview of the army.

The Color Scheme (Yellow helmets denote they're from the Second Company) The painted ones are about four years old at this point and need some touch-ups.

The Razorbacks go with the Tacticals, the multi-meltas with the melta squads and las-plas with the plasma squad. The Sicaran will be armed with heavy bolter sponsons, not lascannons, and will be supported by two Dakka Predators.

And the centerpiece for the army, a Fellblade. Not built yet but will be soon.

I have a Techmarine coming in the mail to use as a Master of the Forge with the Clan Raukaan relic, Betrayer's Bane, a master-crafted combi-melta with infinite melta shots.

Hopefully this will catch your interest. I plan on updating at least once a week with pictures of my progress, as well as some fluff for the Chapter as a whole as well as the individual tanks, squads, and characters.

More details of the army list.

Hell yeah brother-- I love seeing DIY armies, especially when they are tank heavy. Vanquishers? That's a cool name too. Have you looked at the siege assault vanguard list from forgeworld? One of its perks allows you to take tanks like predators and vindicators in units of up to 3 tanks as one heavy support slot-- freeing up your HS for...more tanks! Looking forward to more of this army.

First update is a little late but it's here.

Here is the HQ, the Master of the Forge with Betrayer's Bane.

I managed to put a base coat for the orange and blue for one squad. I'm going to try to focus on one or two squads at a time instead of an assembly line technique that I usually do, which quickly burns me out on painting. Hopefully focusing on a few things will keep me interested.

Fellblade is built and needs some greenstuff to fill some gaping holes in the back. Am I the only one that never gets a large Forge World kit that fits properly? I had the same problem with multiple other kits, like my Sicaran, Fire Raptor and Storm Eagle.

Gotta find a use for those plasma pistols lying around, right?

As far as fluff goes, the Vanquishers use the gene-seed of Jaghatai Khan. They favor brutal, fast and overwhelming tactics to crush their foes, whether it be mass drop pod landings, armored columns or swarming bikes. Their home world is a nuclear wasteland inhabited by techno-nomads that wander the countryside with what wildlife remains.

I have looked at the siege assault list and it is intriguing, especially the Siege Master. Choosing from four special rules at the beginning of each game is very powerful. And moving all of the flyers to Fast Attack is awesome. Definitely something to think about.

I've been having problems with my phone which is why there hasn't been an update for a while. About two weeks ago I had a game with this army and it performed really well, unfortunately, the objectives weren't. We played the Tactical Escalation Maelstrom of War mission, which is Hammer and Anvil deployment and draw up to the turn number of objective cards each turn.

I was playing against my friend's new Nids/Dark Eldar list. He had two flyrants, crone, harpy, 20 termagaunts, Tervigon, zoanthrope, venomthrope, Archeon w/ agonizer, two Kabalite squads w/ blaster in Raiders, one Trueborn w/ blasters in Venom, another Trueborn squad w/ two dark lances and two blasters. I think I got everything in his list.

One of the highlights of the game, the stormtalon in the back was zooming, the one in front hovering. The zooming flyer gets shot out of the sky and and crashes into the hovering one, wrecking it. Between the two, they did get back three hull points through It Will Not Die.

The Dark Eldar have a new plaything.

A desperate ploy to keep the Archaon off the objective.

In the end, I lost 12-11. The first two turns I got absolute crap on my objective draw. Declare a challenge as my first card and Kingslayer and Burn the Witch as the other. The only point I got in those turns was First Blood while my opponent managed to get his. The mobility and firepower of my Talons are what kept me in the game, zooming into his backfield and hovering and blasting off any campers on his objectives to get points. What really screwed me was the nid flying circus and how Swooping Monstrous Creatures interact with area terrain. One toe in it, even when swooping, gives them a free cover save. Incredibly frustrating when almost everything is hitting them on sixes to begin with and will still have their 3+ save against my stormtalons. Only managed to kill his Crone, after soaking up an entire turn's worth of shooting when he dropped down to nab an objective.

The Fellblade and Sicaran performed superbly. The Sicaran accounted for his Venom and Raider, keeping their occupants from doing any real damage due to the range they were at. The Fellblade killed pretty much anything the main cannon aimed at. It wiped his Venomthrope and zoanthrope and some guants turn one.

Despite the fact this army isn't fully painted yet, I already have plans to start another with all the bikes I have laying around. This is one model in the army that I just finished.
