Your russ is an inspiration I just ordered mine yesterday and I'm both super excited and a bit terrified of painting him would love if you could pm some tips or tricks to getting your amazing grey! Your army and this thread has kept me a staunch wolves player even with the wait so cool.

Wow thanks guys!!

Russ is a great model to paint, I look at him and eckon that if you took him off of his tall base, he would look awesome opposite Angron, as if charging each other. They are almost like mirrors of each other.

And PETA be damned

Nova, thanks for the kind words, and let me know what sort of areas you are interested in. The armour, (barring the parts covered up by the cloak and part of the arm) haven't been started on much yet, maybe just a coat of grey over the shaded armour. I'll drop you a pm later today or early tomorrow if that is okay

Not much to update upon

Changed the shield from this:

To this:

I think switching t gold around helps break up the mass of bronze, especially with the wolf heads.... I am now wondering if it would look better by switching glod to steel. However as te runes are losing their sharpness, i will call it a day on the shield. Maybe if I buy another Russ ;)

I also tried out something new (for me anyway). Nihilakh oxide.

Does it look okay?

Did a wee bit mor.

He is taking shape now.

Not 100% happy with the face, really struggling to get nice transitions with the flesh, maybe over diluting it.

Looks proper angry though.

Reckon it needs a little purple or blue around the eyes and the teeth need more defining.

Any thoughts on how to improve the face.

Next up is armour :)

Oh Nova

My drybrush brushes

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20170202_224405.jpg

The closest 1 is a short tip make up brush. I find the short handle and the really stiff bristles are great for catching the edges of things, plus cheap as chips..

I think the face is excellent as is, If i could offer anything the transition between face and hairline could be a tiny bit more pronounced between the temples and hair, ie. above just above the sideburns.

Perhaps a tiny bit more definition in the hair which the the sculpt lacks could be added with extremely fine streaks of white, blonde or bone.

But the face is the best i've seen yet, i'm only offering a fresh eye....

I see what you say about the hair, I'll ive that are a wee dab of flesh shad to see if it helps make a difference.

The hair is almost bone coloured, but i will give it another pass with Ushabti bone, I used air paints so it is maybe a bit muted, so another run will bring the highlights out a bit more, Thinking that I shouldn't have washed his hair with Sepia :D

Thanks Betrayer, I really look forward to seeing how your Russ looks with the metallic grey armour

Foamy, yep basically I drybrushed the pelts. Went frm dawnstone, to long beard grey, then used a normal brush to catch the tips with white scar.

Thanks Grieux, gave it a go, might need to give it another go, as it seems really faint.

As many folks know I work offshore. I often joke that I go offshore to get peace and quiet from my family life :D

The truth is quite different. I miss my family. I can't see them or be with them, all I can really do is talk with them via wechat or the phone. Offshore you are in a cocoon, Still a part of the world but very much apart from it

So I focus on my models and put all my thought of family into them. There is generally a vast difference in quality between those I paint at  home and those I do when I am away.

I missed Christmas with my family and I missed my sons birthday and he asked why I focus so much on my models, so I told him that I put all my thoughts and energy thinking about my family into them..... And now Russ is done, I have given it to him, ..

Anyway enough rambling, time for pictures.

Thanks Lord Thorn, I am debating starting instagram so I can post it up on the Forgeworld website.

I have a flickr account, not sure if it will work though.

Grieux... Oh he will be 6th egon, do not worry about that :D

Anyway, with Russ done it is time to go back and finish up the half-done projects.

So time to get the wrecking crew done

Btw, any unique markings that the templars would have on their armour??

Also, struggling with base ideas... I had considered cutting the BoP boards up and then scoring the designs, however I do not think it will work

I am not keen on  the 40K bases as they are not Prosperine enough and I am not sure of the AoS bases.

Any ideas ?

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks DC12.

I do not think that they will come out with the knotwork helms, but, I'll hang on and see what comes out. I am tempted to take the mark 3's and use liquid greenstuff to modify some of them.

As Russ is now done and Inferno is out.. And the postie delivered my book 2 hours after I left to come out here for 3 blimmin' weeks grrrr... I decided to dive back into painting again

Made a start on Geigor. One thing I learned from Russ is that with ornate armouir, the least stressful way to paint is to do the base armour colour first and then do the details. That way you do not have to get paranoid about ruining the armour you have lovingly painted and can come back in and tidy it all up towards the end.

So behold my messy Geigor!!!

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20170301_221316.jpg

So should I do Geigor with greying hair as he is in BoP, or should I go Ginger, like the artwork in the visions of heresy art books??

Thanks for looking :)
