I must not fear, fear is the mind killer.

"No matter what the Iterators say, we do know fear.

We are bred to be fearless, powerful.

We are.....for the most part.

We do not fear death, that great thing that mortal men tremble at.

No, our fear is simpler.

Once, that fear drove us onto feats of glory.

No longer.

Our cousins will dispute this fact, but it is inherent in us all.

Our one fear, human, is failure.

And Horus showed us the price of it."

Sergeant Leventis of Midnight's Blade.

Cheers, the quote is from Dune (I had to check to make sure).

I'm getting to a point with my Iron Hands that I don't have much left to paint, so I want to do a small army that I can focus on painting and trying to come up with fluff.  So, I thought why not a small Ravenguard/Salamanders contigent of survivors who are tagging along with my Iron Hands.

"We would have not left that planet without the aid of the Tenth.

We were broken, defeated.

The massacre had claimed most of the legion, so few of us remained.

The memory still hurts, it is almost unbearable.

But Ferrus' folly saved us.

He had pushed his sons too hard to arrive at the planet, he had left so many of them behind him.

It was those that saved us.

What few survivors we had banded together with, joined us.

So few.

Those of the tenth we had found rejoined their brothers and were absorbed into their company.

We and our cousins in the eighteenth banded together and did what we could.

As the memories of the events of Isstvan began to spread among them, so did their madness.

They were always cold, the tenth.

But this, this was new."

Brother Strenua, Brother Peruanum, Sergeant Leventis.

Originally 2nd Battalion, 3rd Chapter of the 19th Legion.

The three sole surviving members of the original Midnight's blade.

Brother Cayelii; formerly of Sorrow's call, now of Midnight's blade.

"In the days after the massacre we counted our lost and wept.

The loss of a single brother is an ache in the heart,

the loss of so many was the death of something inside all of us.

But, we counted ourselves fortunate even in the depths of our despair.

Unlike the tenth, we had not seen our father slain.

A small mercy.

Not a single squad survived intact.

We reconstituted the squads we could,

So many had lost all of their brothers that they stood alone now.

Midnight's blade was the strongest remnant.

Out of 20 brothers, 3 had survived Istvan.

How could we have fallen so far"

Brother Brodiei; formerly of Reaper's lament, now of Midnight's blade.

"Brodiei, formerly of Reaper's lament.

A last minute addition to Midnight's blade, not a welcome one.

None of us survived Isstvan the same way.

Scars can be physical or they can be mental, his were both.

Formerly of the destroyer cadre, now forced upon us.

We use his talents as much as we are can,

But we know his fate is sealed.

He is a reminder.

Not of what we once were.

But what we can become."

Commander Hon-Tihl of Skarokk

"Commander Hon-Tihl the Unlikely.

Senior of the survivors not of the Tenth.

No one would have initially expected him to be able to wield us,

But he proved us wrong.

The name Unlikely started as a cruel joke by the Iron Tenth,

Admittedly, not well known for their humour.

They believed him 'unlikely to matter'.

After the massacre he arranged us into a credible force,

Something able to make a contribution,

Even though the Salamanders suffered in their ignorance of their Father's fate.

They have stopped calling him the Unlikely.

He wears it as a reminder.

Unlikely to stop."
