The XIII Legion, Ultramarines

Luther's Rebellion happens when the Lion returns to Caliban to gather the Calibanites to then go to Terra. Which is why the Dark Angels missed the Big Finish.

Edit: Also, did any one else catch the Dark Angels were the second largest Legion behind the Ultras after losing 50,000 legionaries single-handedly keeping the far galactic north in Imperial Hands? That means at one point they had over 200,000 Legionaries too. Learn something new everyday.

Also, would this make them the 3rd largest legion behind the Ultras and Word Bearers?

I believe the betrayel at Caliban was after the Horus Heresy.
Yes. I believe it was even after the Scouring was done too, which makes it a reaaaaaly long time for Caliban to go sour.

As for the Lion being tied up from reaching the siege, the past fluff made it sound like this was due to Russ wanting to stop and help every planet on the way to Terra.

For the Dark Angels being the third largest...it's definitely plausible due to them being around for so long and having a stable geneseed. Though I thought it was a toss up between the Sons of Horus, World Eaters, or hell the Alpha Legion (their shenanigans make it hard to pin down).

The problem we into with numbers is that they're all over the place.

For example, the Sons of Horus are around 170,000 strong. But at Istvaan III, they lose 60,000. And then they lose however many at Istvaan V.

Then you get the Night Lords. They have 90,000-120,000 at Istvaan V, with x still causing trouble in the Eastern Fringe. Then they lose a confirmed one-fifth, estimated one-fourth of "the fleet at Sheol". So what are their numbers now? (90,000+x)/4? Or is it (120,000+x)/5? Or could it be their numbers are now [(90,000/4)+x]-[(120,000/5)+x]?

Then you get the almighty I Legiones Astartes. ~50,000 at Macragge, y heading towards Caliban to seek reinforcements and z actually at Caliban, having been stockpiling for the last three years at least.

So as far numbers go, who knows?

It is odd considering Abnett wrote KNF and UE and the numbers are really screwy. I'm kinda glad that the big books have been hammering out exact(ish) numbers.

Yeah the Ultras were to be a big speedbump, but not the "cavalry" for the siege, that honor went to the Wolves and Dark Angels, and judging by the dwindling size of the wolves and their semi crippled fleet, it was essential just the Dark Angels Horus worried about.

I am not disowning being a total fanboy in this respect, but there was something yet to be explained about the Dark Angels and the Lion that makes them so pants crappingly terrifying to both Guilliman and Horus - two noted generals both commanding large forces.

Well, this is how the Collected Visions book described the last moments of the Siege:

"Erebus of the Word Bearers reported to Horus that their warp-based allies had espied a number o floyal fleets heading for Terra. The Space Wolves fleet of Leman Russ had somehow evaded the Alpha Legion of Alpharius and had set course for Earth. Likewise, a huge loyal fleet had departed from Ultramar carrying the apparently victorious Ultramarines Legion. Horus's daemonic allies said that they were but scant hours from reaching the Solar system. Furthermore, the Dark Angels of Lion El'Jonson were also Earth-bound, though the daemons couldn't say when they would arrive.

Horus was furious at this news. The Space Wolves on their own would pose no great threat to his impending triumph, though their presence would be an irritating distraction. However, the news of the Ultramarines and Dark Angels heading for Terra was a disaster for the Warmaster. Despite their war against the Word Bearers at Calth the Warmaster assumed Roboute's Legion was still the biggest and most powerful Legion and he had no reason to doubt the fighting strength of the Dark Angels. These three Legions together would at best delay his victory; at worst they would deny it him altogether."

- 'The Horus Heresy - Collected Visions', p. 360

There is also this brief exchange from Ben Counter's 'Galaxy in Flames':

"Regulus turned to leave and Erebus said, 'We have waited a long time for this day, Lorgar will be exultant.'

'Lorgar has his own battles to fight, Erebus,' replied Horus sharply. 'Should he fail at Calth, all this will be for nothing if Guilliman's Legion is allowed to intervene. Save your celebrations for when I sit upon the throne of Terra.'"

A similar sentiment was expressed by Dorn, or at least one of his Captains, in Dan Abnett's 'The Lightning Tower':

"'This should never have been necessary. I search the limits of my imagination, and still I can conceive of nothing that begins to explain this war. Pride and ambition, insult, jealousy? They are not enough, not nearly enough, not for a Primarch. They are too petty and mortal to drive a primarch to such extremity. They might provoke an argument, a feud at the worst. They would not split the galaxy in half.'

Dorn looked up at the night sky. 'And yet, against all reason, he comes.'

'Guilliman will stop him.'

'Roboute is far away.'

'Russ, then. The Lion. The Khan.'

Dorn shook his head. 'I don't think they'll stop him either. I think he'll roll on until he reaches us.'"

Maybe not. The Ultramarines-related releases seem to have been... expedited. We got the upgrades (shoulders, heads, torsos) before the rules for the Legions even came out. Our Spiritual Liege is already ready (just waiting the few weeks for the formal release) and one of the Legion-specific units have already been showcased.

My best guess is that Honored Telemechrus will not have a dedicated model - although you would definitely be able to build him using the Legion-specific Contemptor body and the appropriate weapon arms.

So that just leaves the other two Legion-specific units (the assault and the terminator unit, respectively) and Ventanus. We just might have them sooner than we would think. Look at how much extra love the Imperial Fists got from FW. If we are lucky, we might even see a dedicated Ultramarines command set.

I don't mind waiting. I just want Ventanus's model to feature that banner planted on the corpses of a whole bunch of Lorgar's fanatics. :P

So here is a quick mock up of the paintjob i want to use for my 30k ultras. I didnt put much effort into him as i just wanted to see how it would look. What do you guys think of this scheme?

Just ordered mk 2 marines...

May seem random, but how does FW ship the models? Do they put them in a blank cardboard box like they do with the books?

Brown box, inside are air bags and the actual plastic cases/bags for the models. It's always well packaged.

As for your paint work, it looks good. Imo the 30k ultras shouldn't be as cartoony colourful as the 40k Ultras...

Thanks mate!

And i agree, the lighter blue on some ultramarines is not the most attractive imo. I much prefer a dark blue

Looking good so far! Keep it up!

Do you have a list you are working towards?

Thanks :)

I do. I need at least another 15 tac marines(mk 4 and praetor), the suzies, cataphractii, 2 contemptors, breacher seige squad, and Ventanus whenever he is released. That is my basic list anyways. For me, tac marines take priority as i want my army to be infantry strong.

I don't know for sure (I'm still waiting for my birthday for book 5) but Ultramarines

seem to benefit from multiple units given the legion tactics.

Saying that I'm going for a mobile force as I want a different approach as my other

army is Death Korps of Krieg, which is best used as a gun line.

Looking forward to seeing those MK II painted.
