XV Legion, Thousand Sons

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!  I've been a lurker here far too long, so I figure I should stop slacking and give you guys my take on the Thousand Sons as they were before their fall at Prospero.  These are my first attempts at taking pictures of models and were done with my phone and a neat background I downloaded from the internet, so forgive me if they're a little blurry.  I've been playing these mostly as Chaos Space Marines, so my squads are currently 9 man, but I'm hoping to transition to mostly playing loyalists in 40k (I figure I'll use Ultramarine tactics, as they're pretty generalized and Tigurius makes a solid stand-in for Ahriman). So, without further ado...

First up, we have Ahzek Ahriman, Chief Librarian of the Thousand Sons.  Until Forgeworld puts out a 30k sculpt for him, I'm using his 40k version with a swapped backpack to represent him.  Surprisingly there isn't much crazy chaotic stuff on him, he mostly looks like a very fancy librarian.

Next we have another Librarian, this time with a Force Axe.

Sevrin Loth

Now for a Tactical Squad.

First Tactical Squad (1)

First Tactical Squad (2)

And a second Tactical Squad.

Second Tactical Squad (1)

And last but not least, a Veteral Squad.

I've got several more projects in this army on the way, so I'm hoping to keep this updated as my legion force grows.  I'm also very interested to see what Forgeworld does with the Thousand Sons look- I initially tried just painting preheresy marines in the Thousand Sons paint scheme, but it felt too boring, hence the upgrade kits mixed with Forgeworld models.

These are lovely!

I can't wait until they release thousand sons, I have thought about ordering some heads from different sources, and getting stuck in, but I'm waiting for the rules to be released until I do, or Id only build what I like lol

Can't wait to see your next part.

Bet it took a lot to get all those heads

Thanks for all the compliments!  I actually had a Thousand Sons army before I decided to go 30k, and quickly realized that the only way I'd truly be happy is to continue my devotion to the XV.

Currently on the hobby table I have, in order of painting priority (it's making my eyes swim to just type this up... I have a lot of painting ahead of me):

5 Legion Breacher Marines that I'm painting up as Command Squad members with magnetized special weapons

5 Assault Marines without Jump Packs, with 2 Flamers

Sicaran Battle Tank

5 Drop Pods

3 Fire Raptor Gunships (yes, that's 3- I'm planning on taking an air superiority list to the Bay Area Open)

2 Deimos Pattern Rhinos

2 Mars Pattern Rhinos

Contemptor Dreadnought with 2 Close Combat Weapons

mkIIb Land Raider Phobos

Achilles-Alpha Land Raider

Deimos Pattern Predator

Mars Pattern Predator

6 Imperial Knights

Mars Pattern Warhound Titan

35 Elysian Imperial Guardsmen Auxilaries

Out of interest, what colours and methods did you use?

Well, what can I say mate - you are a stAr! cool.png cool.png cool.png i love how those heads fit the concept of pre-heresy Sons just as well. I want to see how different will it look (if at all) when FW creates their fluff, but I love what you have done there! If I ever do a pre-heresy army of red main colours, I think my interest is shifting more towards THs over BAs.

That's hilarious, your 1Ks recipe for red is almost the exact same as mine. Only difference is I basecoat in white, wash in carroberg, then go on to Mephiston.

Keep up the good work, always glad to have another member of the XV.

And damn, I really need to pick up Loth sometime soon...

Well, an update- I was pulled off course by the intense desire to paint (and play) a force of Imperial Knights to go with my Thousand Sons, so here we go.  I've got a bit of background for them, as well as some initial WIP pictures.  I wanted a Knight household that I could ally with my Legion forces in 30k, and I hope the idea of psyker Knights isn't too out there.

House Apollo

Founded during the Dark Age of Technology on the world of Aeropos, House Apollo quickly established its hold over both its own world and a number of relatively local systems.  Dedicated to the what they consider the two prime virtues, Knowledge and Honor, they ruled with a stern but impartial fist.  When psykers began to manifest within their domain, the barons of House Apollo came to the conclusion that they represented the next stage in humanity's future, and dedicated their substantial resources toward studying psychic powers.  Within a few short generations, a program of selective breeding saw almost all of their scions manifest psychic powers.

Unfortunately, this obsession with the power of the warp was also to prove their undoing.  When the Age of Strife came, they were caught completely off guard by the sudden and catastrophic possession of many of of the psykers in their domain.  Fighting a rising tide of madness and daemons, House Apollo was slowly pushed back until all that remained of their once great dominion was the single system of their homeworld, buffeted on all sides by an intense warp storm.  After centuries of constant battle against rogue psykers and daemons, subsequent generations of House Apollo were selected through a brutal darwinian process for both their psychic ability and their resistance to the corruption of the warp.

When the warp storms of the Age of Strife finally abated, House Apollo launched several expiditions into the surrounding systems of their previous domain, salvaging what they could of the ruined infrastructure and scouring the taint of the warp from those worlds affected.  It was on one of these that they first encountered the forces of the Imperium.  To be continued...

And now, pictures!  I've always loved Hot Rods, and when I came across the paint scheme for Legio Astorum (the Warp Runners), I knew I had to paint my Titans in that scheme.  I'm definitely getting better with the airbrush as well, and I'm pretty impressed with how this came out.  It's still definitely WIP, and I have 5 more to paint after I finish the first, but hey- why not?

WIP- Full Flames

WIP- Flames

WIP- Initial Blue

Beautiful army. Nice work. Best wishes for the rest of them. You're a braver man than me taking on a project that big.

This is not intended as a criticism, just an fyi. Ahriman acquires the six horned helm that his 40k incarnation has during the events of Ahriman:Exile, long after the Heresy. I think that is at the same time as or after the switch from red to blue/gold livery.

I've read Ahriman: Exile, but I didn't remember that specific detail- thanks!  In any case, 40k Ahriman is just my stand-in to use until Forgeworld puts out the 30k version.  I've heard rumors of Thousand Sons upgrade kits coming in September, with any luck I'll be done with my Knights by the time my order arrives.
