Old OP content:

I figured I'd start a new plog for the scattered progress I make on my CSM army:

The Shadowborne

The basic fluff is that this is a force of chaos which worships and follows the orders of Be'lakor. While he isn't "helping" Abaddon do evil things, he is finding subversive ways to strengthen his warband. The pursuit of daemonic artifacts, relic vehicles, gene seeds, and other goodies has made them a force to be reckoned with.

The army contains some elements of all four gods, as is befitting to Be'lakor's history and stature, but for the most part this is an undivided force. Plenty of marines, cultists, helbrutes, aircraft, and so on. Plenty of sorcerers, and a few chaos lords as well.

They have been known to make alliances and cooperate with other chaotic armies to accomplish mutual goals, or deceive them into doing the heavy lifting before stabbing them in the back and robbing them blind. They follow Be'lakor, what did they expect? There have been recent reports of Be'lakor's forces attacking an Imperial forge world alongside the Brass Stampede Khorne Daemonkin legion...

Here is the basic color scheme:

And their sigil, which I think I can pull off freehanding:

I had a CSM primed black, so I decided to test out the paint scheme. I LOVE black and purple in combination and I've really been looking forward to painting some CSM in these colors.

Quick and dirty Vallejo Black and GW Xereus Purple:

I like the way it's looking so far.

I'll also be posting my progress on my Khorne Daemonkin legion, the Brass Stampede, from time to time.

9/30/2017: I wanted to rebrand this plog, as I never did anything with the Shadowborne beyond painting a single squad, and I doubt I'll ever do anything with them, unless chaos primaris come out at some point.

The Brass Stampede was originally the name of the KDK legion of sorts, now that army is gone and I guess I'm a de facto World Eaters player. And also daemons of Khorne. And also various Khornate renegade warbands as well as those frrom other legions.

The Brass Stampede is now a massive conglomeration of many different warbands who are slaughtering their way across the galaxy with the ultimate goal of summoning Angron to realspace. The various characters and stories that I've created are gonna be scrapped or recycled, because I'm not happy with all of them and my tastes have changed slightly. They'll still be the most shallow stereotypically Khornate things possible, but we'll see where I go with that.

So far, I know I'll have a contingent of classic World Eaters berzerkers backed up by daemon engines. There are heretic Astartes and daemons leading this legion warband, and Khârn is along for the ride in his usual way.

There are the Fangs of Cerberus, who are all either worshippers of Karanak or possessed by him. Their origins are uncertain. They have heavy wolf-themed elements, so they may be traitor wolves. Or, they may have slaughtered some wolves and salvaged/incorporated their armor and wolf motif into their own identity.

There are also Word Bearers, Iron Warriors, and perhaps even Alpha Legion elements in the Brass Stampede.

There is a huge renegade guard army that is as of yet unnamed.

Daemons of Khorne are led by the black-skinned bloodthirster Umbragor the Hopeslayer. The essence of the legion mirrors the Hopeslayer, as the rest of the daemons are black-skinned as well.

A great looking model. I might advice to wash the entire model with Drucii Violet to tie in the colors and to give depth to the armor trim.

Exactly my plan, thanky! I also plan to do some edge highlighting.

Huh !!! I'am putting together a Purple and Black loyalist Chapter. Great start by the way.

Thank you! And good choice of colors :cool.: .

I'm also painting up some old berzerkers just to practice painting skills. Well, I suppose I can use them, too... but I have a bunch of FW World Eaters kits that I'm going to use to make proper berzerkers.

Here's the Shadowborne mini cleaned up and washed with Druchii Violet:

I like the effect very much. It's quite subtle. The purple is deepened a little bit, and the black has a very thin tint of purple as well as some very faint purple edge outlines.

Here is the first step in the edge highlighting:

Vallejo German Grey for the black and Vallejo Purple for the trim:

Well, it isn't as clean as I hoped it would be, but I don't think I've even painted 10 minis in total yet so I'm pretty happy with my progress:

I still need to finish the bone/horn sections, add another wash to the eyes, and work on the meltagun. I'll also be mounting him on a 32mm base.

All in all, I hope Be'lakor will be pleased.

While I'm not generally a fan of purple, I like the darker tone here and the counter-highlighting on the black recesses works very well.  Looking forward to seeing more!

Gracias.

I think the grey highlights really balanced the light purple highlights. They were a little overwhelming in the previous step. I will hopefully hone my ability to paint thinner lines on subsequent minis.

I've put some more work into the leader of my Khorne Daemonkin army, Arctos Gorehowl (counts-as Bloodthirster of X, Y, or Z). These are some pictures of his warp dragon mount:

I've used a rod of copper to pin the wings, but haven't glued them into place yet. I'm going to need to sculpt some wing membrane going down the dragon's back.

And finally some work on Arctos Gorehowl himself:

Head from the Wrathmongers/Skullreapers kit, legs from the Chaos Lord on Manticore, and torso from World Eaters Rampagers. It took a LOT of work to get the legs filed down to the proper proportions:

And here's how he looks atop his dragon:

Still a long way from being completed, but it feels great to finally get started on the bastard. I plan to add quite a bit of greenstuff details, some brass khorne icons from FW, and who knows what else.

Oh, and here's a WIP shot of his daemon spear, Heartseeker:

Dude, Arctos is immense! Cannot wait to see some paint on that bad boy. Speaking of, what's your Daemonkin colour scheme?

Also, your edge highlighting has inspired me to give it a try. It's similar to thamiers Balefire Legion, and they're the only other place I've thought it worked, so I'm doing it on my Harvest guys.

That dragon thing is pretty cool! How are you going to paint the dragon?

I'm thinking of using the DnD adult red dragon for inspiration, definitely some sort of red scheme.

I'm not 100% sold on it, but I think I'm going with a solid brass scheme, weathered and corroded by the warp. I haven't perfected it on test minis yet, but I'm getting there. Will post pics later of some samples.

I'll have to check out thamier's army, maybe I can pick up some ways of improving my technique. I used the GW Blood Angels painting guide Death Company tutorial as a base. Theirs came out so much better :P. I like edge higlighting, but I also like airbrushing. I'm hoping to combine both methods to good effect, I think I overdid it on the meltagunner.

Looking forward to your Harvest stuff! They're Nurgle themed, right?

Very nice. I've seen the evilcraft stuff before on their site. But never found a good scale pic. The backpack seems a little big?

It's pretty chunky, but I'm betting it won't look out of place once the arms and pauldrons are added.

Harvest Nurgle themed? No, they're one of the Daemonkin warbands out of the codex. They'll find a fortress in the path of something like a Waagh or Hive Fleet, kill the defenders and then man the walls to get maximum kills.

Haha ouch, the blood god is going to tan my hide for that mistake. He's going to remove all the skull stickers from my progress chart :(.

I forgot about them. I remember the Wrath and Brazen Beasts off the top of my head, and that's about it.
