Exciting times as BL announced officially the next Ahriman novel, Unchanged. You can read an extract too (epub format). John mentioned on Facebook that it is indeed the third novel. Given John's importance to the Horus Heresy in both BL and FW formats, it's always good to see what he's imagining. I wonder if he will be writing a fair bit of the fluff in FW Propsero whenever it emerges :)

As an addendum, John French put up a useful order of the series on his blog:

If you are tracking the Ahriman series (for Warhammer 40,000), and wondering how the novels, short stories and audios fit together, here is the running order:

  1. All is Dust  (short story) - http://www.blacklibrary.com/all-products/all-is-dust-ebook.html
  2. Exile (novel) - http://www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer-40000/ahriman-exile.html
  3. The Dead Oracle (short story) -http://www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer-40000/ahriman-dead-oracle.html
  4. Hounds of Wrath (short story) - Honour of the Space Marines, http://www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer-40000/honour-of-the-space-marines.html
  5. The First Prince (audio) -http://www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer-40000/ahriman-the-first-prince-mp3.html
  6. Gates of Ruin (short story) -http://www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer-40000/gates-of-ruin-ebook.html
  7. Sorcerer (novel) -  http://www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer-40000/ahriman-sorcerer-paperback.html
  8. Hand of Dust (short story) -http://www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer-40000/advent-day-two-ahriman-hand-of-dust-ebook.html
  9. King of Ashes (short story) -http://www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer-40000/renegades-of-the-dark-millennium.html
  10. Unchanged (novel) -

It is attractive, for sure. Ahriman reveals his secret Son of Horus side ;)

But it's funny how these novel covers never show the human face of Ahriman: it's all Ahriman in triumph. Not the frailty of the character that the series really depicts.

It would be nice to see Astraeos, Ignis, Cadar, Kadin, Carmenta, Ctesius, Credence, Sanahkt, Iobel, etc ... Although then it might be too comic-booky/movie poster-esque and we'd loose those distinctive images of Ahriman. But it would be nice to have something more interesting - a graphic design or a quotation of Vermeer or van Eyck or the Bedford Master or Blake or who ever else. Something cultured, historic and challenging, to suit that most cultured Astartes :D

I don't think that cover art really fits in with the other two books sadly. Not a fan of it.

I only had the chance to read the two previous novels when I had started putting together and blogging my Thousand Sons. As such it was a nice bit of inspiration.

Certainly very good - I generally preferred the second of the two, mostly as the first (whilst well written and with a good plot) had to establish the series and shape the characters/protagonists, whereas the second could naturally grow from that. You won't be disappointed with either mind.

They are in the preview...but I think none of Ahriman's allies are 'fixed', he loves them but he will use them if it suits his hubristic view of a moment.

I think French is making an ambitious series here, much like ADB with his Black Legion series. They are dense, allusive and not exactly easy. And that is great. I do hope Astraeos is not just the disposible villain for this novel, gone by its end. I also hope we see more inside Ahriman's and Astraeos's heads in this.

I also wonder how much the Sons in these novels reflect FW's future fluff for Prospero volume (which of course is complete). Some ppl said that the bits of fluff included in Unremembered Empire regarding the I Legion reflected the FW thoughts on them. Since French is part of Bligh's cabal, I guess things like the Masters of Ruin will appear in FW? Also I wonder how much of what ADB's done with the Sons in Talon of Horus reflects the same? (sometimes one wishes one could hotlink to ppl's names like on FB!)

Seems like your thoughts are pretty spot on. To quote ADB's recent FB post:

Ah, the "@#$%, John French, help me" stage of writing a novel.

Like clockwork.

I am actually planning an Ignis conversion. Just not sure what to do about Credence.

Same here, I think CASTELLAX BATTLE-AUTOMATA WITH DARKFIRE CANNON is a good model and size, or if you want bigger the thanatar.  Loving the idea of an orange coloured mechanicum detachment for my future Thousand Sons 30k army.

Hot damn, that's one hell of a cover. I have to start reading these, I really like everything I've read by John French so far.

You can ping people on a forum I post on by @name-ing them and it's SO useful. Then again, given the prestigious folks who post here on the B&C, it might be bad for their patience, sanity and browsing experience, so...

  • 3 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

Just finished it. As people probably expected, there's little actual plot advancement but there is one big one at the end

the Rubric works, despite being sabotaged by 3 different individuals, on Helio Isidorus. Memory's wiped on what happened before the first rubric but he's present in the flesh.

 also,

I guess at some point Magnus got broken into shards, similar to what supposedly happened to the Emperor (of course, it's old fluff and I'm not 100% certain that its still relevant) as seen in the Inquisition War duology. The second rubric was supposed to work by sacrificing (as I understand it) both Magnus and Ahriman.
