Greetings All

I recently stumbled across the Vostroyan and Valhallan Models while trawling through EBay looking for some Crimson Fists to start up the game, these models instantly stopped me in my tracks and now I am thinking about joining the Imperial Guard.

I know that these are metal models and I am comfortable with converting metal miniatures (I'm was a Big Hat Chaos Dwarf Player) which got me thinking, does anyone know if there is a fluff resource anywhere for the Vostroyans and Valhallan regiments and in particular Armoured Regiments? I had a quick Google and found some regiment names but that was about it

In low point games (1000 Points) will a full tank/tank heavy army be particularly over powered against a specific foe as I do not want to not play with the new army when I kick start the project? I would like to note that until recently I have not paid a great deal of attention as to what people run when playing at the LGC/GW Store as I have been playing WHFB, but I did notice a lovely Dark Eldar army and an extremely well converted Eldar army (Exodites)

Initially I am thinking of running the below, what do I need to know about running a Tank Heavy List?

935 Points

HQ: Tank Command Squad - 325 pts

Command Vanquisher, Lascannon

Exterminator, 3x Heavy Bolter

Troops: 10 Veterans - 155 pts

2x Plasmagun

Chimera

2x Plasmagun

Chimera

Heavy Support: 2 Leman Russ Battle Tanks - 300 pts

Any idea's for the 65 points?

Welcome to the Guard! :D Such a tank list would be able to hit pretty hard in most cases, but in exchange is somewhat brittle. AV14 is great, but Russ tanks go down easily in combat and even with the Wyvern you don't have a great deal of anti-horde. Being low on numbers yourself much will depend on effective use of fire and controlling your opponent - things like drop pods will be troublesome for example.

As such you won't be losing any opponents with a list like this as it is very far from being unfair or overly powerful :) If you do then I can guarantee that you wouldn't want to play such a fool anyway... ;) What sort of fluff are you looking for? There is some stuff out there, but not especially much on the Vostroyans and Valhallans so they're pretty much what it says on the tin. Try these resources for some info :tu:

For fluff, have you checked the wh40k Lexicanum ? Sure you might find interesting fluff here or here smile.png

I have yes thank you, there was not a great deal of information there hence me turning to older Black Library Books

Search for Valhallan 597th msn-wink.gif

Is that the Ciaphas Cain Novels? I have been looking for them but not had a great deal of success just yet

i think they work fine together, actually... both are "russian-esque" -- one is more Cossack and one is WWII era... too bad they took away that awesome special character that threw waves of undying conscripts at the enemy... so good.

Sooooo... Vostroyan or Valhallan ? happy.png

That indeed is the Question that I am asking myself, I think that the contrast of the 18th Centuray Cossack-esque Infantry and Modern Guard Vehicles would produce a great contrast on the table (plus the facial hair) on the other hand the Valhallan's would give me a much greater scope for painting different urban winter camo patterns on troops and vehicles.... tough choice that in all honesty most likely will boil down to funds and time. The Red and Brass does look great though

Would that have been Chenkov? If I go Valhallan he will be my Tank Commander (counts as Pask in larger games) Did GW release any Special Characters for the Vostroyans? Mind you the Chenkov model may not look too out of place in a Vostroyan army if the Emblem on his hat is replaced...

Son of Dorn, Yes, that was Chenkov and the 2014 Codex did take him away (along with my Captain Al'Rahem).  Sigh.

To replicate Chenkov and his “Send in the Next Wave!” perhaps you could take a couple of conscript blobs with a priest each (with one of the priests modeled as Chenkov).  Then you always put one of the blobs in reserve to try to replicate the feel of “Send in the next wave!”  It’s not as good as the old Chenkov, but it’s kinda the same.

Interestingly, a pair of 30-trooper conscript platoons each with 1 priest costs about the same points as the old platoon command squad, Chenkov upgrade, and blob of 30 conscripts.  So, essentially 62 conscript troopers in the 2014 Codex costs about the same as 36 conscript troopers in the 2009 codex.

Enjoy reading Rebel Winter and the Caine novels!  They are quite fun.

Tallarn Commander,

“We are many. They are few.”

That's a pretty cool idea thank you for that, I'll bear that in mind once my tank company is "complete" I've made up my mind and will be going with the Vostroyan, more specifically The 24th Vostroyan Heavy Armoured Regiment, "The Iron Bloods"

It's not the most competitive list ever, but one of the IA's has a Death Korps of Kreig list that has endless waves of infantry -- if one of your platoons is killed, it walks back on from your table edge.  You could use those rules and your models... you're gonna have lotssss o' metal.

Eventually I hope to put out a couple of Infantry Platoons to support the list so I know that i'll have another large metal collection. My thoughts are that the tanks will somewhat keep down the initial costs of the army. Plus it's the guard so when will a collection ever be done?

Well I have been on Ebay and for £150.00 collection in person (tonight) I will shortly be in possession of

2 Command Squads

4 Sergeants

4 Lascannon Teams

14 Flamers!!!!!!

3 Snipers

2 Plasma Gunners

47 Vostroyans with Lasgun

I'm going to need a lot of Acetone to strip the paint off and do some greenstuff repairs but I think that from this I can make

CCS - 120

Medic, Standard, 2x Plasma Gun

IP - 260 pts

PCS - Lascannon

IS1 - Lascannon

IS2 - Lascannon

IS3 - Lascannon

10 Vets - 110 pts

2x Melta, Demolitions

10 Vets - 110 pts

2x Melta, Demolitions

And will still have

Command Squad

10 Flamers (Why so many flamers)

3 Snipers

10 Vostroyans

I think I need to revisit the Heavy Tank Company idea of just jump right into 1500 point games

You don't hang about Son, just the type of attitude we like :tu: Looks like you'll be able to flood the board with flamers - infantry squads with flamers always do well for me at a bargain price and I'm sure your 4 flamer PCSs will carve a blood path across the table. Or should that be charred? ;)

No point in hanging around. Plus was a bargain can probably field 2 Infantry Platoons and CCS with what I have picked up tonight. Will need a bucket of acetone however as it appwars the minis have been painted with enamel paints :s

Yeah thats part of my love for metal models. Dont like the paint scheme off into the bucket of the Emperors blessing to wash the filth away. Probably leave them in a week or so as I want some themed basing doing as well and need to finish the household chores first *grumble*
Well I now have several tubs of Vostroyans in acetone dotted about in my house, i'm hopeful that next weekend I can have enough stripped down and cleaned to turn this into a PLog of sorts and start with a few simple conversions (Flamer to Melta and Flamer to Heavy Flamer)

Wll back on EBay again today, not such a good deal as previously but does round out what I have to reinforce the "core" of my list i need to do a few conversions (Vox Casters and Medic to Sergent's, I have a Priest from a Necromunda Redemptionists Gang so am covered there, just thinking how I can make a Commissar from the 2nd (currently spare) Officer from the command Squad. So i'm now looking at;

740 pts

CCS - 120 points

Medic, Banner, 2x Plasma

Ministorum Priest - 25 pts

Platoon 1 - 260 pts

PCS, Lascannon

IS1 - Lascannon

IS2 - Lascannon

IS3 - Lascannon

Platoon 2 - 285 pts

PCS - 4x Flamer

IS1 - Power Axe, Flamer, Commissar

IS2 - Power Axe, Flamer

IS3 - Power Axe, Flamer

So can have a holding Platoon of Lascannons to bubble wrap my tanks when they arrive and an advancing Platoon with Commissar for Power Weapons and Flamer Templates with the PCS and 4 Flamers to blunt the worst of Horde armies or hold an objective.

Thinking that I will add a couple of Leman Russ Battle Tanks to the list to round it up to 1000 points

Ok so first model in WIP Stage for the Heroes of the Guard Competition

Father Absimil, a "Chevek" (offworlder) from a Planet that I have not yet named or given much thought to the background, but will be working on his backstory shortly.

 Father Absimil

Inducted at an early age Absimil remembers very little from his life before the Adeptus Ministorum. Absimil subscribes to the Theology that the Emperor is a stern judge of the dead that pass through his judgement to the realms beyond. Absimil has been active within the Calixis Sector for nearly a standard Terran Decade, preaching his ideologies to the faithful upon Maccabeus Quintus and is held in high regard by the Regiments of Maccabian Janissaries. His posting to the Vostroyan 55th Infantry Regiment followed the loss of the regiments own Priest Father Janov at the hands of the Venomhand Ork Tribe upon the fields of battle.

Despite being a “Chevek” (off-worlder – mild insult) Father Absimil has quickly intergrated himself within the regiment gaining a grudging respect from the men and offciers for his ability to rouse the Zeal of the troops with his oratory skills. Lately he has taken a great interest into the Treatis Elatii that we was issued upon his arrival with the regiment
