This is my first post on B&C

Thanks to a GW screw up to make me happy they and me the whole of my order again in way of apology!

This gave me, what would have been a small force, built around models I had but I was able to move weapons teams around, special weapons and such.

First up here is a Infantry man! He's still shiny as the final wash is still a little wet (but I couldn't wait to get photo taken ).

Here is the first infantry squad, I may do more work on the bases. I'm unsure if I want the base edge picking out.

Platoon Captain sporting his 'gang' haircut from whatever house gang he excelled in before being drafted into the imperial guard. Armed with a shotgun and covered in shells... Perfect for urban warfair!!

Autocannon simply converted from the Lascannon team. I've also added spent ammo on the ground. Very simply using cut up dry paster.

The Genral is a converted chaos cultist leader. With Ste legion officer head added. Shotgun relocated and drum mag and sight added to it. Then a little green stuff for a uniform jacket under the coat.

Vetran squad with three plasma guns. I've done these slightly different to make it clear they are vets. I have done a stripe down the center of the helmets and all boots, Gasmask and gloves are black.

Lascannon teams. Here I've made some detail brick building ruins that the teams are using for cover.

Commissar. Using a empire witch hunter and just a simple green stuff Gasmask.

Welcome to the B&C Vulpine, you have some find Guardsmen! :D I like the colour scheme, very apt for the Steel Legion and you've got a great basing scheme to match - the HWTs in particular. What's next on your list, presumably as this is the Steel Legion we can expect some Chimeras? ;)

Thanks Frater Domus, yeah love the Steel's. I had done a Pretorian army. Fully converted, maxmini heads and loads of character... That's the downfall, guard army's with character are hard to play... You just can't commit that Srg/squad to die! Steel have no personal character (apart from the officers) so it's easy to send them into the breach!

PRÆFECT SOCIORUM, thanks, the uniform is fairly close to the original, bit of a diffrence in places but generally the same. The bases are done pre undercoat and base coat spray. Then it's just highlighted with a slightly different drybrush. I'm now doing the models in batches of 40 men. No Chimeras yet actually. I'm thinking a hydra, and one Chi for my vet squad. Next painting wise is...

Frater Domus is the title for all members (including you), so better to use names. If you want to use titles though I usually go by Lord Commissar ;)

Looks like we've a lot more nice models to look forward to. The Wyvern is a nice kit and performs very well on the table (two is the magic number, as for most things). I'm sure we'll see some Chimeras being added to your collection before too long though, after all the Armoured Fist was pretty much invented by the Steel Legion :D Plus I'd like to see your scheme on vehicles, do you have something in mind for them?

Thanks Warror Fish, I see now!!! I have stated on a Russ. You can just see it behind the company command above, it's the one with the steampunk style engin at the back. It will be the same base and then grey stripes. For my chimera and Ordance tanks I was thinking grey with a stripe similar to my guys colour.

Kierdale, what babe?

steellegionnaire85 (I was born 85... You sure your not me?) yeah it's a grind, my suggestion is to paint one, work out the paints you need, then I grab a few (around 40) and do all with one paint, then start again with the next pot.

It's boring but you can get a fair few sorted. I do it with music of TV... Once your started you should get into the grind.

I have a platoon of 30 guard on the go and am doing it like you, airbrush the basecoat, paint all the boots/guns black, paint all the webbing, paint all the metals, paint all the flesh then go back to the start and begin the highlights. That's the plan anyway :)

Hi Truesight,

Sure can!

The bricks are plasticard, around 3mmx4mm and I've cut them into lose bricks. Because of the amount I used clippers, a knife took way too long.

http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj567/Joel1985A/DFE9394E-38ED-421E-B4D2-332E324B83AA.jpg

After making loads, I mixed some bricks with the thicker basic material, so some of the models throughout the army have the odd brick. Tying the walls into the rest of the army.

http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj567/Joel1985A/BED42BE1-F1DD-4C6E-938F-2319609BBCCF.jpg

Between brick layers I use green stuff 'snakes' when the level above was pushed into these it was aloud the squeeze out, giving a look of mortar between each brick.

http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj567/Joel1985A/1F3375E8-4D86-4DAE-BC8D-62F88806FF7D.jpg

The bottom few layers of brick are not individual bricks. Instead of cutting single bricks, I cut a length of the plasticard and just ran my file across the front to cause the gap. The gap doesn't go all the way trough, giving the look of mortar between each brick. Here the team have removed a few bricks so only the nose of the Lascannon is exposed.

http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj567/Joel1985A/71069161-CAA8-44C9-8954-47E5C5E63C09.jpg

The top levels are made up of separate bricks, giving them the look of coming lose. So the mortar has come away between the bricks and they have moved.

http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj567/Joel1985A/6A042B2E-46C1-47BD-8D03-BE7FEA537505.jpg

Gaps are easy to achieve, just leaving spaces and building each layer overlapped like bricks are usually from one layer to the next.

http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj567/Joel1985A/0E96C352-A3FD-465D-B796-D6FB1BD352A0.jpg

Some bricks just plonked ontop, as if gravity alone is holding it on.

http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj567/Joel1985A/914B1B97-52E7-4E87-82DE-F8AAC1B59D4B.jpg

Here I've made it look like the guard have kicked some of the brick works away to allow the Lascannon to fit into the terrain. The odd brick toppled and rubble added.

http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj567/Joel1985A/6496EBA6-B752-4D8E-85C2-9F8CF865366C.jpg

Now the Lascannon and it's crew are protected, with only the top of the cannon exposed and aloud clearance to survey the field infront.

Hi RADU LYKAN

I've been doing mine like this

1) After basing, Spray black, lay on fronts, coat, Lay on back, cost again. Stand up and coat again.

2) Spray Zandri, leaving the underneath to look like shadow.

3) Drybrush Agrax. I was highlighting but it takes way too long, and the final look is much the same.

4) Ink brown.

5) Instead of black, I used black wash with a little black added. It's easy and quick to apply. It's cover is not as good, however, the bits that grin through look like white highlights.

6) Then the brown on boot covers, gloves etc.

7) Green gloss wash used for the goggles.

8) White circle on shoulder badge and red lightning bolt. That's the only real detail. Note, I haven't done flesh. It's so hidden it looks fine left in the cream.

9) Highlight the rubble with a quick drybrush of white.

10) Ink the model brown again. DONE

Cool! I wanted to see those up close, there is a lot of movement and character in those heavy weapon teams

Yeah, I wanted it to look like some had made good what cover they can find. Like the kneeling heavy Bolter guy, as if he found that gap chucked his weapon down and started blaming!!!

Some are more like they have kicked holes in places to give a better line of sight.

The heavy weapon squads with the 60mm bases give a lot of opportunity for this kind if thing.

But, I can't take the credit. The models are fantastic. Same with a lot of the old metal guard (and Necromunda). They have a lot of character and movement.

I remember the release of these models (year2000), I actually had a poster of the Armageddon campaign on my bedroom wall.

Hence why I got the SL. Originally I just wanted a small force to paint up. Thanks to a GW screw up, there apology was to send me the hole lot again. Really good customer service!!!

Really nice work - I like how much variety you've managed to get out of the fairly limited model range.

Well. You get 6 different lasgun guys. But you can mix in some of the loaders (giving a kneeling guardsman in the squad) 2 special weapons and 2 heavy teams.

The main problem was the Sargent. Especially the pose he has. So I've bent some arms and angled the pistol arm, bent that also and such. In an attempt to make each one look a little different.

Very nice models, you created a lot of diversity with very few different models, and that's pretty cool ! I may steal borrow you the idea of those plastic card bricks ^_^

You should do. I've mainly done it on the heavy weapon squads. The teams within infantry squads don't have as much terrain.

But it is reasonably easy and is effective. It also gives you the opportunity to possibly convert your guard to be interacting with the cover.

The guys I am painting at the moment are mad robot miniatures kurgans, basically space Russians. Your pics have convinced me to add some red brick to their bases instead of the all grey all the time look they currently have, was thinking about it anyway to justify the brown coats but your pics have pushed me over the edge.

Mad robot also sells some space Germans (caipari or something on his site)that could be a good match for your steel legion if you are looking for more pose ability etc.

When my kurgans are done I am hoping to get some of said space Germans for some guard on guard action, too much call of duty when I was younger? Probably :)

Nice work with those bricks, too. I figured it was chopped up sprue. Looks damned good, anyway. Going as far as adding mortar, too :tu:

And I was referring to the babe with the power.

What power...?

The Madrobot look fab! How can they do that and GW can't/hasn't?

I guess because gw chose the wrong material or processes for fine cast which shot any future non plastic models in the foot,so old stuff like the steel legion won't be getting any attention, guard aren't as popular as marines and so a sub faction of guard isn't worth the cost of producing plastics and so probably isn't high on their list of priorities.

I will say mad robot def chose the right material and process, I haven't had so much as one air bubble in over a hundred models from them, I can't say the same about fine cast or even forgeworld unfortunately
