MoM is being printed

Wow!!!

There are up to 3-5 months in BL inbetween being printed and getting released, lol

Well at least we have news that it is done and being put to paper FINALLY!, sorry AD-B, but the wait for your anticipated masterpiece has been too damn long, no pressure :P

I believe Master of Mankind has been in our collective consciousness since 2011/2012

Back then, there was going to be a Blood Angel marine protagonist. Now, it's dropping that in favour of heavy focus on the Custodes.

It's hard not to get massively excited

After I'd started writing it (and having axed the Blood Angel and all Space Marines pretty much completely) a certain role came up where that Blood Angel fellow fit in really well. Zephon is by no means the protagonist, but... he's in there, after all. There are certain themes and that a Space marine's presence highlights or contrasts, and he was perfect for it.

I love BA and I also love Custodes

This is double-win for me

Finally, a good depiction of a Blood Angel.

Just out of curiosity, which depiction of a BA did you find appropriate? Not much book time, granted. Everyone draws their expectations from at least one source, the codex or source books at least? Maybe we can find some good fic to throw your way.

Id go as far as saying Andy Smillie's - 'Herald of Sanguinius' & 'Virtues of the Sons' have far more depth of character than any of Swallows Blood Angels, and both were short stories.

Keep in mind that Swallow's Blood Angels are the product of a very different time. A LOT has changed about them since, and the books suffer from tonal discrepancies.

Personally, I found Fear to Tread one of the weakest HH novels to date, not least of all because of the way the daemons were presented. Seeing Andy Smillie deal with Amit afterwards, though, or the aforementioned Virtues and Sins, was great. Haley's Sanguinius in Pharos and Thorpe's version in Angels of Caliban were spot on too.

I also enjoyed Annandale's Eclipse of Hope.

The Blood Angels in my eyes are suffering from their successor Chapters getting better spotlighting. Flesh Tearers stole the show when it came to the Black Rage, and even the Blood Drinkers had an excellent outing (and short stories) with Death of Integrity. The BA are the only founding Chapter that hasn't starred in a Space Marine Battles novel, too, with Ultramarines having three now, White Scars and Raven Guard in multiple and the Fists and their successors being all over.

There hasn't been much written about them in recent years. Shield of Baal, and that's about it besides the Space Marine Legends/Legends of the Space Marines stuff (Mephiston, Lemartes, upcoming Dante)

Swallow's Blood Angels are simply bland

They're just vanilla marines with a red paint job, not character whatsoever

White Scars and Raven Guard in multiple

What am I missing other than Hunt for Voldorius?

Master of the Hunt, Damocles (Blood Oath & Hunter's Snare), Overfiend (Stormseer & Shadow Captain), The Shape of the Hunt and Dante's Canyon. A tie-in for Damocles featuring Raven Guard that also ties into The Shape of the Hunt was also published, In Service to Shadows iirc, but it hasn't been rebranded to SMB yet.

When i first made my way through Fear to Tread i found it quite enjoyable, but repeat visits have been more and more difficult to stomach. I did really enjoy Lost Sons though, only listened to it for the first time yesterday and it was the quickest 40 min audio ive heard in a while, was great to see Rubio making an appearance too!

More Knights Errant please cool.png

I think Swallow generally does better with short form stories. His audio dramas and short stories tend to be on point, whereas his novels drag. Heck, didn't he write Honours? The advent short about the old old Blood Angel captain who inspects his wargear and considers its meanings?

Gotta say though, I enjoyed Nemesis more than Fear to Tread. The reveal of the enemy happened too early in my opinion, but it was full of cool ideas, whereas Fear to Tread took something that should have been damn epic in proportions and made it look small.

Corax is:

Novellas:

Corax: Soulforge

Ravenlord

Weregeld (New)

Short stories:

The Shadowmasters

Value of Fear

Raptor (prev. Audio)

As well as these, the volume will also include a new novella to cap off the series and bring the story of Corax up to the point just before the Siege of Terra. Entitled Weregeld, it is the culmination of many of the storylines prior to that, and sees the return of characters such as the Raptor lieutenant Navar Hef, Commander Branne and Therion Vice-Caesarii Marcus Valerius, Librarian Balsar Kurthuri, Gherith Arendi and, of course, Corax himself. It is a story of endings, in more ways than one, and is, for the foreseeable future, my last contribution to the Raven Guard story in the Horus Heresy (though there will be more appearances in different titles). Like the rest of the numbered series it will be initially released in hardback with an author afterword.

So this book is the entire Raven Guard arc since Deliverance Lost (and better than it, I'd say).

I'm really hoping for Gav to go in a particular direction in Weregeld (spoilers for RG stories so far).

The thing that really annoyed me about Raptor was how at the end the Raptors slaughter the Space Wolves for no real reason. It's framed like it's a "hard but necessary choice", but it's really not. To me, that made them no better than the traitors. But it also occurred to me that Gav could spin it as the first sign of a mental instability in them. So far they've had the physical debilitation, but mentally they're much like any other Astartes, which also lessens the tragedy of Corax's arc in creating them.

But if in Weregeld we see them descending further and further, ending up with Corax learning about the Space Wolves and seeing them become monstrous savages, then it puts it in a whole new light, and adds back in some of the tragedy that's been missing from his story so far (I know many feel it's absent completely after the actions of the Alpha Legion in Deliverance Lost, and I do see that to some degree, but I also feel it's still there somewhat since Corax is so eager to get back into the fray in that novel. Against the advice of others he rushes the second, large batch of Raptors, and if he hadn't done that the degeneration would have been on a much smaller scale).

If Gav goes in that direction I feel it will not only make for an enjoyable story on it's own, but will also enhance and round off the Raven Guard arc very nicely. So here's hoping.

Fear to tread started really well but from about half way through it just became repetitive and... difficult.

Still, thats half a book more than Vulkan Lives

Well, Vulkan Lives is a masterpiece biggrin.png comparing to 'Deathfire' lol.

Silent War was released already. Next month's either Echoes of Imperium (disc release of audio dramas we already know) or Corax, depending on their timing.

Corax in October, as was also mentioned in Newsletter for Summer reading subscription.

Ah, yeah, anthology. December seems ripe for MoM, then...

Right, November/December it would be or 'Master of Mankind' (don't know why are you so pitched for it, cause it's about unending battle in the webway, instead of glories butchery of SM Legions biggrin.png ) - or (hopefully) 'The Crimson King' !
