Dreadnought is looking very smooth :tu:

I see you went for the more straightforward relic blade choice on the Captain - perhaps I should have gone down that route... Curious as to how he turns out; I know he'll look ace but I've not seen a marble effect on a Marine before :)

I've been going through come black marble pictures and for me, this topic looks pretty hard. The worst thing is that in nature, black marble takes many forms. Some of them are simply white streaks on almost perfect black. Some contain whole pallet of greys.
But the problem for us, painters is that when a person looks at our work, he must see black marble. Not white lightning-effect.

For me the best effect you got on the back of the Captain - big area allows for better comprehension. Lines are longer and can differ more between themselves. The smaller areas are too cramped with them for my liking.
I've found this guy under the 'marble space marine' in google:

I have to say, that this level of so fine lines would be beyond my skills. But the overall coverage of the black with grey/white lines (and note some dots!) is what I would go for if I ever tried that thing.

The one you linked looks more like very fine battledamage on regular black armor to me to be honest.

I'm not sure whether it's the same for black marble as it is for white marble but try to make it look less like brush strokes and do multiple layers. Start with a very dark grey and go brighter on the main streaks and especially on the 'knots'.

I've used this tutorial for my white marble effect but have yet to invert it for a black marble effect (disclaimer: it's lots of different paints but you should be able to mix them on your own with just black and white)

Thanks Jol! I was feeling really unmotivated yesterday, but your kind yet simple comment really helped!

I liked how you did your Cataphratcii capt, but I was thinking this option would be simpler for the relic blade.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Def not an easy thing to pull off and I'm kinda winging it, but I'm honestly not feeling bad with how it looks so far. Definitely not finished, the cramped areas are rough.

I was loosely following that tutorial, but really for my skill level, adding too many different colors will just give me more oppirtunities to mess it up (more if you already dont like it).

The plan right now is to finish the rest of the armor, then go back with a lighter grey over the veins (like in the tutorial) and add ard coat. What I did so far was more of just a test, but I honestly am pretty okay with it for my current skill level. If it ends up too bad, I'll fix it after the etl.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how he comes out finished! Good job on on your guys as usual!

When I did white marble I think one of the things I did was water down the paint I was using for the lines. I think when you do the light grey like you said it will probably achieve the same effect, and seeing the result will help me a lot.

Thank you sir! He is actually finished now (for etl purposes at least) along with 90% of the rest of my vow. Just gotta find time to touch up a few things and post the pics!

Sorry for slacking Jol!
