Hey everybody! I decided to put together a WIP thread for the new Emperor's Children army I'm putting together - mostly to keep myself honest and motivated, but also so that I can share some of the hobby with you fine folks. I'm happy to entertain any suggestions, as true perfection can only be achieved through strife and the crucible of comba- err, critique.

So, to start with I've already painted a couple of test minis from the Calth set. Eventually I'd like to add some vehicles to the army, but for now I'll be starting with mainly line infantry from the box sets. It's been a few years since I did any real painting, so I figure that's the easiest way to get back into the swing without ruining anything expensive and resin.

I've got some more Tacticals ready for arms and shoulders that I'm hoping to get done today or tomorrow.

And that's it for the first post! Now hopefully I can keep on mission :biggrin.:

So I did what I said I was going to do and primed the rest of a squad sans-sergeant, who I need to wait until they come out with individual Phoenix Spears to do. Fingers crossed that'll be soon!

In a spurt of motivation (and to see whether I could actually replicate my test mini) I finished up a second member of the squad and painted the base coat of a third. I had some trouble with the white on the new marine's face plate. The Ceramite White I'm using has the rough consistency of spoiled milk and it seems to make it go on a little funny for some reason. I'll need to take that into account going forward and thin it more before I use it as a base.

My plan on the Tacticals, to create some variety between the similar Calth poses, is to pick two parts of each marine and paint them white and gold respectively. Hopefully it'll all still look coherent at the end.

Looking good bro!

When painting the white I'd suggest using an off white, at least for the base coat. When I painted white on my Emperor's Children I mixed some Celestra Grey with the white. The mix gives a much better coverage than the white by itself, and you can highlight it with pure white if you want to.

Looking forward to seeing some more :tu:

More 3rd Legion Loyalist! Excellent!!!

Nice work so far, but listen to the sage advice of Kizz re the white. I mix my white with ice blue, as an off white base, then add more for shade then highlight with white. In the words of Duncan Rhodes thin your paints and apply several thin coats.... that said your white does look pretty good!!

Yeah, I'll definitely take a look at basing with some sort of off-white mix next time. I was trying to use the FW formula for the white on their EC painting guide, but both times I've had the cottage cheese issue. My White Scars isn't much better but at least that's already a layer paint.

And thanks to both of you for the kind words and advice! Although I'm a little suspicious of anyone named Eidolon supporting my Loyalists :P

That's a nice, simple colour scheme you have there! A like the small things like different faceplate and knee pad colours to individualize the Marines but I cant help feeling like they are all almost in the same pose...Tactical marines need love too :P

Thanks! I've been away from the hobby desk for a few years, so I'm starting out kind of small and slow. Eventually I'm hoping to build up to the Reaver maniple I impulse bought a couple years ago! It...might be a while :D

Oh, and on the color scheme, I waffled a bit between layered and metallic purple. The FW art suggests metallic purple with a paler/more subdued gold than most folks seem to use, but I thought that kind of clashed. So I took the gold and went with closer to the FW paint guide mix on the purple.

Personally I am a fan of reproducing the book art in miniature form, you can see my EC interpretation on page 3-4 on my plog, but at the end of the day you should paint your models how you want and for someone coming back after years away, you are doing fine. Keep it up!

I hear you, I wish FW would be more consistent with their display models so that it would be clearer what they intended. The EC tacticals the show are metallic but the rest are matte.

I was actually going through your thread yesterday, I quite like your Sons!

Thanks!

I haven't really painted any more white yet from when I read your post :P I'm planning to do a light blue base and then use a layer white on top though on the next one, see how that comes out.

I'll admit, I totally spaced the studs when I was doing my gold. I'd like to say ot was planned, but nah, just me having a senior moment!

I like and dislike the FW scheme in equal measure, it feels flat to me most likely for the reason you gave. That said, I'm going to experiment with a little weathering when I get these done - EC may be perfectionists, but even they don't bring a bucket of paint on campaign.

Alright! So I didn't have a whole lot of time this weekend, mainly due to Halloween shenanigans, but I wanted to get something done so I mocked up a test-base. I'm kind of trying for what I think Laer would look like - it's described as a series of floating, crystal and coral islands with vast temple complexes. So this is what I've come up with:

  • 10 months later...

It's been a while, but I've been painting again! I decided to start working on an Imperial Navy themed army for the Konor campaign, so far I'm about a third finished with my 2000 pt. list.

I started off with a Valkyrie, since it's a big model and I've always wanted to paint planes for 40k:

I moved on to some Veterans styled as Naval Armsmen for the landing party. I thought the typical Cadians looked to formal for armed crew, so I did a bit of research and came up with a mix of Cadian, Genestealer Cult, and Skitarii bits:

And finally for now, I finished some Bullgryns for the list to keep the crew from thoughts of mutiny or escape:

Next up is a Thunderbolt, which I'm excited to paint but not at all to assemble. Comments and criticism welcome!
