Applications for Legio XVIII

Aren't the jackels going to become a pirate faction?

Should the replacing legion also take that end point as well?

It was an idea of one possible path, but by no means is it required. And, it sounds like we'll have Astartes raiders well past the Insurrection with leftovers from the Predators and Grave Stalkers.

And during the Insurrection, we have a couple of factions already fulfilling the role, so we don't really need pirates anymore.

Blunt, that's GMT-5.

So 4:30pm in my neck of the woods

Alrighty.

To everyone else, I haven't come up with any more questions yet to allow the other applicants some time to catch up. There will be more coming in later.

Just a rough idea I just threw together.

Sentinels of the Emperor

There names come from the way that they fight with far flung troops screening there larger troop movements which was the way their fleets also moved through space.

Origin: Destir-A larger than usual planet with a very unique geological phenomenon. Unlike other planets which tectonic plate movement happens in the scale of millions of years, this planet has numerous plates in fast movement giving the landscape a constant changing shape. Only a few mountain ranges are immune to this shifting. The flora and fauna has adapted to this by becoming migratory, even the plants themselves moving away from fault lines to escape geological destruction.

-This is why the legion prefers firepower, with shifting terrain when you see you opponent once, it might be the only time.

-Mobility, adaptability and scouting is crucial when the very ground is changing below you.

The arrival of the Emperor wildly changed the planet as the Mechanicum cooled the core of the planet, halting and slowing the shifting of the tectonic plates and bringing some sense of stability to the planet.

Note: if we say tzeench is the cause of the tectonic action on the planet then as the crusade goes on the tectonic action could begin again and when psychic activity is found on the planet Culn could suspect his psychic brothers or the emperor for trying to destabilize his legion (who in his eyes) he views is far superior. Yet at the same time he could be suspected of being psychic himself and causing it himself (but he is not)

Primarch: Culn Fareth;

A rough man, taken to moving through the twisting changing world, he united the nomadic, disjointed population of Destir. Creating an elite group of scouts which could help scout out and report back the way terrain was changing. He aided in the construction of larger more structured and efficient city fortresses that resisted the movements of the plates.

When the emperor arrived Culn greeted the landing troops with gunfire, spurning the calls to surrender and forcing the Emperor and (was it Russ that met the Jackels first with the emperor) to fight all the way into Culn’s city. Only after Culn was beaten and physically (facially) scarred by Russ himself did Culn surrender to the superiority of the Emperor’s firepower. Yet beneath the surface his spite smoldered, he would have this firepower for himself. Then let anyone try and take his domain from him.

-Laughed when the emperor asked him to surrendered/joined the crusade

-rumored to have gone to Prospero when the wolves attacked, maybe to get an underhand blow against Russ.

Great Crusade Operation: The Seninal’s advanced elements would advance ahead of the main fleets, giving non-Xenos races a chance to join the Imperium without violence. Otherwise they provide reconnaissance, determining where the Sentinals should launch their strikes. In the case of a humanoid planet, the least amount of collateral damage that could cause surrender. In the case of the Xenos, where the legion could land and destroy all opposition from a distance.

Warfare: Using mobile team screened with scouts and fast elements as picket lines it either advances or hold position until contact with the enemy at which point the skirmish line engages sporadically to corral or maintain enemy while fire teams move in to suppress and kill. Destruction of enemy trumps collateral.

Tactics: Envelopment and Fire superiority.

Speciality: Blowin stuff up, from a distance then walking away without even looking at the explosion.

Role: They will be joining the insurrection, not only due to their genocides to local populations while bringing cities into line which causes rough relationships with the more noble/population friendly folks. Similar to the Iron Warriors, Culn just wants to unleash his guns on Alex who tried to heel his legion, curbing their potential.

Unique: We dont have a legion focused on mobile firepower. We have a rapid assault legion.

Legionnaires: Fast scouts and great shots, they look down on other legions which endanger themselves by getting into melee or even worse let their enemies come to them on their enemies terms.

Interactions with other legions/groups: They get along the best with the mechanicum as they respect the massive amounts of firepower which their creations wield. They would most likely get along with the Fire Keepers as they enjoy the firepower their defenses have.

Fall to Chaos: Due to the giant changes of their home planet, a decent candidate for falling to corruption to Tzeench (could be a potential cause of planet’s tectonic activity).  Khorne is straight out although might be the most interesting for a splinter fleet of khorne followers who are even hunted by the other Sentinals. Slaneesh for the speed of it, or from the pleasure of gunning an enemy down without any risk, the “art of murder from a distance”

Special Units:

A scout/infiltration unit possibly with bikes

A fast tank

Heavy support squad

Numeration: The XVIIIth Legion.

Primogenitor: Aniketos Maur, The White Bull, The King in the Stars, Holder of the World.

Cognomen: The Brazen Bulls, None Prior.

Observed Strategic Tendencies: Heavy infantry assault, mass armoured formations, attritional warfare, shock assaults.

Noteworthy Domains: Primary recruitment and resource rights on the worlds of the Tauromachy of Pont, secondary tithe rights on Ctesiphon, Nandi and Aur.

Allegiance: Renegade.

The dread Brazen Bulls, both terrible in their might and wondrous in their majesty, have been ever-present in the Great Crusade - The accolades and laurels bestowed upon them numberless, their bull's-head banner standing triumphant on more than a hundred worlds. They held the Emperor in lofty heights, He-on-Terra being the paragon of Mankind, and they his instruments of conquest - Aniketos Maur his willing servant, his blade and his axe, although the Primarch was not a man defined by his nature - Indeed, was he not also a poet of great renown, a harpist of unparalleled skill and a patron of architects? This was a man who sought to bring peace to the Galaxy with violent means, with violent delights. The Legion itself, although bloody-handed, were not mindless killers, were not barbaric hordes, but rather held themselves highly and nobly - Proud in their bearing, excelling in matters of statecraft, the downfall of tyrants, the scourge of the Xenos

How, then, did a Legion so loyal come about to casting away their oaths? Some would argue that it was out of bitterness - Bitterness caused by monstrous losses and long-jaunt campaigns in the Far North, against the Orks, whilst others would say that it was out of necessity - Were this a  kinder age, Aniketos Maur in his wisdom would surely have rallied his Legion and led them to Terra, but this was not the case. Survival, it was decreed, must come before all else. When news of the Insurrection reached the Brazen Bulls, they were wintering in the Tauromachy, replenishing their ranks. Bedlam ensued and rumours were rife. On a dozen worlds of the Tauromachy, men rose up in the name of Icarion - And these Maur crushed with cold, calculating efficiency. He would not countenance treachery, but nor would he commit to the Emperor's cause. Terra was far away, across a galaxy that grew ever-more hostile, and besides; each passing day refugees and merchants arrived - Some claiming that the Emperor was dead and Terra had fallen, others that He had been cast down and placed in chains by Maur's wayward brother, more still that it was the Emperor who had betrayed the Legiones Astartes, allying himself with dark  and foul things.

Maur isolated himself from his Legion, and for seven days and seven nights pondered on the matter at hand. Border incursions along the Tauromachy were starting to begin, his Brother's sons slaughtering his citizens, and realised that action must follow. Amassing his Legion in all their finery, with laurels upon brows and banners above heads, armour polished and glittering. His voice was clear, although those who stood near would later attest that his face was full of grief, he announced that the Imperium they had carved was dead, but the Tauromachy would endure. The Imperium-That-Was would be mourned, the Emperor and his Brothers would be remembered as they were, not as they had become. It was an Age of Uncertainty, one that followed the Age of the Imperium. Dark years, those were, years that tasted of ash and blood. The Brazen Bulls found themselves mired in conflict with both the Insurrectionists and the Loyalists, and of these campaigns not everything can be wrote. Maur himself travelled along his borders  aboard the mighty Poison King, and on times led his armies into Imperial and Insurrectionist space, dark-eyed and vengeful.

--

Okay, so that's a little blurb of the Legion. I've kept it as vague as possible - It's all malleable. I'm not sure which of his Brothers Maur would have been close with, yet, and which he would have disliked; nor have I named the Legions that he campaigns against during the Insurrection, so that can all done in-depth if the Bulls are chosen.

As  for today's question - I think the Bulls would be apprehensive about an Age of Peace. In an essence, they are much like the Ultramarines with the Tauromachy, in that they would become statesmen and Lords; but all the while, they would not want that. Maur himself would baulk at the idea of growing old and fat atop his throne, and his Legionaries would laugh if someone were to mention them becoming obsolete. How, they would ask, with a sneer upon their lips and a laugh colouring their words, Can you have your peace without there being conflict?

Sorry for not responding, I was ill and inactive yesterday.

Thanks for even considering my idea!

Yes, it was "shot down" to a degree, but I'm fine with that, because it was too close to others'ideas and concepts. That's what I meant with "not stepping on anyone's turf".

(To be honest it was a spontaneous idea anyway, so no damage done...)

I wouldn't want to have two Primarchs or Legions be too similiar either.

...especially not with all the possibilites still available.

And there are people with far more elaborate and passionate concepts! So go people!

Don't you worry, I still keep the idea. Maybe I can use him as a secondary character sometime down the line or so...

...either way:

I will happily help out, give critique and share ideas, that could be added to others' concepts.

I'm neither an A-class modeller, nor rules writer. ...but I'm a font of lore and phantastic ideas.

Well, I thought the "Big guns" legion were the Fire Keepers? I don't think it's mutually exclusive but I seem to recall Demus calling Dibs?

(@generalriphook: can't you simply put the colour to "automatic"? or if you only have access to the bbcode, simply remove the color tags)

What is your legion's theme, in a single sentence? And are they based on a particular real-world culture?

Hmm don't think so

As far as I understand them

They: scouts + big guns + killing from distance

Predators: scouts as infiltrators / sabotage + fast hitting units + heavy units (tanks, terminators, etc) as the killing blow

Soo no problems as far as I can see. :)

Well, Thørn's legion and the premise of the Day of Revelation starting during a punitive action against the Star Lords has inspired me to write a piece featuring all nine admirals, to give them a bit of a characterisation. Is anyone opposed to me writing it, with knowledge that it will be edited assuming the 18th Legion ends up being something else (I am particularly eager to see what Sangui is cooking up, for example).
