WIP: Heresy Legions (IF, DG, WB) (Tacs and Apothecaries)

Good afternoon ladies and gents,

Thought it was about time I stopped lurking in the shadows and started getting some C&C on some of the painting I've been doing.

Now, I'm under no illusions that I'm a fantastic painter, but I think I can put out some pretty decent models when I feel the need.

As you may have worked out from the thread title this isn't going to be specific to one Legion, or focus on one of my armies. I more wanted to show some of my WIPs to see what people thought.

I very much welcome any criticisms or suggestions as to how to improve what I do!

For a little bit of reference, I've got about 8 or 9000 points of Imperial Fists (in various stages of completion), about 2500 point of Word Bearers and a very new collection of Death Guard bits and bobs.

So, all that out the way, let's get started with the boys in yellow:

Here's a Praetor I made out of the Forge World Cataphractii Praetor, a Phalanx Warder shield and a nice big axe I found in my bits box. (I believe it's from the Thunderwolf Cavalry kit).

That's the only photo I have to hand at the moment, but I'll happily post more if people wanted them. There's also a link in my signature to our YouTube channel and on there are a couple of videos showcasing some of the Fists.

Next up we have a few of the Word Bearers that I've been working on.

One of my Gal Vorbak and one of the Anakatis Kul Blade Slaves

Some of my Plasma Support Squad:

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0052_zpsnk4jcqhr.jpg

And a shot of my Librarian/Centurion 'conversion' (based on the BaC Chaplain model) with a few of my Veterans supporting him.

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0081_zpsrjxv0l8r.jpg

Again, more photos available on request!

And finally, the start of the latest project.

My Death Guard Siege Breaker

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/DG%20Siege%20Breaker_zps29bunvkh.jpg

I'm actually rather pleased with how he's come out so far. I've got some weathering to do on him, and in this shot the base wasn't dry so it's not been washed/highlighted as of yet.

Well, that'll do for this first post I guess.

I hope you enjoy, please feel free to ask any questions/post any C&C. I won't take offense, I promise!

Ta muchly.

Thanks Pyroclast!

Very much appreciated He's one of the Warhammer World exclusive guys, he may have been a Limited release when it first came out, I can't remember.

I picked him up at the 40k Open Day the other weekend.

Howdy folks, update time.

Few more of the Death Guard I've been working on recently.

Firstly, here's the Siege Breaker after a bit of chipping added using Rhinox Hide and a sponge and some washes on the base:

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMG_20161122_222111_zpsyted9dto.jpg

He was my first try at the sponge weathering and I think he came out ok.

Next up are a few of the Veterans that I've been working on:

The Sergeant:

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0138_zpsayplsumk.jpg

One of the random Power Weapon chaps:

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0141_zps4lpla2tm.jpg

The bases still need to be done, and I'm debating whether or not to try and add some dirt/rust streaks to them or just to add weathering powders to the feet and lower legs.

Last up we have last nights workings.

I decided to repaint one of my Leviathans in DG colours. Still very much WiP, but I'm happy with the current progress:

Thanks for reading folks.

As always, C&C appreciated!

And another update!

Bit of work done last night, got a Contemptor ready for weathering:

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0146_zpslrd4jibf.jpg

Apologies for the slightly dark photo, but hopefully you can see enough!

Also got this little chap (mostly) done:

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0149_zpstw44x1ma.jpg

He's going to be a Primus Medicae, the plan being he'll run with some Deathshroud and, probably, Mortarion at some point.

That's it for now, more to come soon I'm sure!

Thanks for looking,

Matt

Thanks mate, that's very kind of you!

I think it may be a bit of both actually.

The green is just Castellan green base and then Elysian green over the top.

I accidentally bought the Air paints instead of the standard ones, so I think it was 3 layers of Castellan and then 2 of Elysian.

After that, I'll wash it with a roughly 1:1:1 mix of Seraphim Sepia, Agrax Earthshade and Lahmian Medium to darken it down a bit.

(I'm not entirely sure what the Sepia brings to it, but I accidentally mixed some in on the first model and quite liked the result so kept it!)

Update time!

So I've managed to get a few more Death Guard bits and bobs done over the last few days, hopefully the pictures are ok and you can see enough!

First, the Contemptor has had some weathering applied.
I'm a little worried I may have done too much, but I think it's probably ok:

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0154_zpsvxiarczl.jpg

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0165_zps0myhiyvw.jpg

Secondly, I managed  to get a Heavy Support Squad with Autocannons sorted.

Here's the Sergeant (with the metal faceplate and one of the standard marines)

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0164_zpsokcbqpn7.jpg

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0162_zpsrohz8fho.jpg

And finally, I got a 5 man Grave Warden squad mostly done.

Chem Master with the Power Fist and another standard Warden:

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0157_zpsd4z1usxf.jpg

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0158_zpsu1jbpcvn.jpg

They all need their bases finishing, but I need to get some more Stirland Mud before I can do that!

That's all for the moment.

I'm hoping to get 5 Deathshroud painted in the next few days, possibly some Tactical/Veterans done as well, so hopefully some more pictures later in the week!

Matt

Good morning ladies and gentlefolk!

As promised, here are the Deathshroud I managed to get mostly finished last night.

As with a lot of the other Death Guard from this topic, the bases need finishing and weathering powders still need applying around the legs and feet.

I'm pretty happy with these chaps overall, but there are a few of the sponged on weathering splodges that are too big so I'll have to try and fix them at some point.

Thanks for looking, and thanks for the Likes and comments so far!

Thanks Mr F!

Very grateful for the very kind words! The weathering is definitely something that I've been worried about as it's the first time I've really tried it.

It's so easy to do, but difficult to know where to stop sometimes!

Hopefully should be some more pictures coming over the weekend!

Thanks MrKeef! I very much appreciate it!

Obviously the MkVII helmet is a little wrong, but I think it looks acceptable.

It was mostly for the additional lens piece over the eye to help with the Apothecary feel.

Then it's just one of the Tartaros Chain Fist attachments under the Lightning Claw.

  • 1 month later...

Howdy folks,

Sorry for the delay in updating this, real life getting in the way!

Anywho, I've started working on Mortarion. I'm pretty much using the same process as I did for the rest of the models, just on a slightly larger scale!

I'm quite happy with how he's turning out so far, obviously a long way still to go!

WiP shot of the main body (pre washes and shading):

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0211_zpsxgjfbf8w.jpg

With arms attached and scythe temporarily in place:

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0214_BURST001_zpsnzr8s91d.jpg

And finally his head...

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0227_zps5mm6dtft.jpg

I'm not sure I'm completely sold on the skin colour. I was aiming for a pallid, washed out kind of look, but I'm not sure it's worked...

As always, any and all C&C is appreciated!

Stay tuned for more updates...

(Still to come, Outriders, Assault Marines, more Veterans and Heavy Support Squads and some Quad Mortars)

Thanks Soric, much appreciated!

I can't claim credit for it as an idea though. I pinched it from Flint (here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317970-flints-tiny-tutes-4-the-blood-of-loyalist-lapdogs/)

I was a little dubious of following the guide without an airbrush but, with the exception of some of the brighter silver highlights, it was surprisingly easy!

Good afternoon ladies and gentlefolk,

Couple of updates.

So, I'm done with Mortarion. Quite pleased with how he turned out actually.

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0232_zpsf9nelkir.jpg

I've also added some weathering to the Leviathan that I'd painted previously. Again, I'm quite happy with him too!

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0233_zpsmgwi3eom.jpg

And I've made the first bits of progress on my Outriders and Assault Marines.

Assault Sergeant (Power Fist, Rad Grenades and Combat Shield)

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0236_zpsivcqrqyl.jpg

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0237_zpspynizob1.jpg

Outrider Sergeant with Power Fist:

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0234_zpsfpnoxzab.jpg

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0238_zpste2occu5.jpg

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q407/WBGMatt/IMAG0239_zpsoxlz440h.jpg

Still some work to do on the metals for these two and then the rest of each unit to sort as well.

I'll hopefully make some progress on them over the weekend!

Thanks for looking!

Thanks mate. The bike, and I think the Power Fist, are from Kromlech. It's called a Breacher Bike, I think.

The rest of the bits are from BaC and/or BoP. There are another 5 of them in progress at the moment as well, so shouldn't be too long before they're ready!

Morning all,

Quick update on some Death Guard progress I made towards the end of last week.

Here's a 10 man Tactical squad, Sergeant with Power Scythe:

A pair of Apothecaries with Power Swords:

And another Sergeant (for a future Tactical squad) along with two chaps with Heavy Bolters (mostly just because I had them lying around!):

And, finally for this morning, I've made progress on the remaining Outriders and Assault Marines.

Hopefully be able to get these little dudes done by the end of the week!
